  1. If I'm reading bb-ref.com correctly, the entire team is .833 in wins and .548 in losses. I really don't know if there is anything to be read into these splits - when you lose it's because you're not hitting or not pitching or not doing both. Mauer looks like the interesting outlier this year with an OPS in losses only slightly lower than in wins.
  2. This year Shields pitches in about as favorable a home park as possible, and has put up a 3.90 ERA. His road ERA is terrible. He's 33 and this would be consistent with entering a decline phase. A very real possibility would be one decent season out of his next three, ages 34-36. This would be worse than keeping Nolasco, IMO.
  3. However, this kind of overlaps on a third characteristic, "stuff", doesn't it?
  4. It's not just judging now whether he can play third - at the moment he still really can't, as too many plays eat him up. Instead, what's important is forecasting whether he can complete the learning curve to the point that he can play the position. My sense is that he can do it. But forecasting is harder than judging - the forecast for instance may be essentially correct but off by a season or even two - just look at Aaron Hicks for a recent example of making moves based on talent evaluator forecasts.
  5. I guess I don't spend enough time in the concourses when I'm at a game.
  6. Too close. But we'll take it.
  7. Looks like I picked a good moment to show up and watch a game. I'll echo the above sentiment hoping for a nice outing by Jep.
  8. It's a statement of the negatives outweighing the positives. He's never played an inning out there and I don't see the braintrust throwing him that kind of curve.
  9. Sano isn't going to play RF, much less be the starter there. Book it.
  10. I loved watching him screw around during fielding practice, taking grounders at short like he was serious about it.
  11. I'll be getting to mine shortly.
  12. And, not to whip a dead horse by now, the matter is explained in a section of the TD Comment Policy.
  13. No clue. They both have a chance to be special.
  14. Does Bill Smith need and deserve an apology for the things he did that he's already received appropriate credit for, time after time?
  15. That's why my wife and I bought a condo. She has taken a job there, and the hotel bills after 3 weeks convinced us.
  16. Not to bring the discussion back to baseball or anything, but I watched Hicks's AB from the left side, for the first time in quite a while it turns out. I was impressed with what seems to be his new ability to recognize the breaking pitch in the dirt, far enough in advance to not get himself out. Didn't get a hit, but it's still a difference like night and day, compared to when he was going really badly. He gives himself a chance.
  17. Though, with allusions like that, it might always be your last, big guy.
  18. A prominent candidate for Prez is quoted as saying that while he never served in the military, he “always felt” that he had because he attended a military-themed prep school that gave him “more training militarily than a lot of the guys that go into the military.” Discuss.
  19. With the obvious exception of Hunter in for an ailing Sano at DH, and never wanting our backup catcher even though our starter is no great shakes either, I like this lineup a lot!
  20. We won't know for 2-3 years but I am more than a little anxious about the Hu component of this.
  21. Edgar Frederick ("Ned") Yost
  22. I love AT&T Park so I have to go with the consensus there. Minute Maid Park in Houston is a dreary place to see a ballgame. I need to get to PNC. As for old ballparks: I got to attend two games at old Municipal Stadium in Cleveland shortly before they tore it down. First game was cheap seats in the lower deck, behind pillars - terrible experience. Second game we sprang for expensive seats, low down in the upper deck above the on-deck circle on the first base side - I will never have such good seats again, in a modern park, even if I'm in the front row. The old architecture taketh away, the old architecture giveth back.
