  1. I've been a big Kepler proponent for a while now. This 2015 season, though, looks as if it will stand out as an outlier when some more seasons are in the books. He's benefitted from a somewhat high BABIP that could be unsustainable. Let's not put too much pressure on him, and be ready even for a slow start in Rochester, at which point more fickle analysts will call into question his readiness and ability after all. A mid-season callup in 2016 will be soon enough. Aggregate AAA stats won't matter, only his current readiness in the eyes of the coaches. Only an emergency should place him on the MLB roster to start the season IMO - that or an absolute monster spring on his part of course.
  2. To make this true, a stud closer (whether you adhere to defined roles or not) is needed. Perk, as you say, can be that guy but currently simply is not. Needing to cast either of these two in the stud role may work, but potentially will expose them, though we have high hopes for May. I've been slow to accept May as reliable in this role. Anecdotal evidence for me is that he gives up a lot of squared up hits, whether caught or not, and is perpetually one mis-located fastball away from blowing any close lead. However, I took a look at his split stats, and he seems to have a moderately high BABIP, around .340, as either a starter and reliever, and conventional wisdom says that will come down of its own accord. That in turn would make his current 3.03 ERA as a reliever begin to look very effective indeed. Maybe I just need to take a breath and relax when he's called in.
  3. I've said elsewhere that Boyer looks like a lock to hold a 40-man spot over the winter and likely a 25-man spot coming north next Spring. What I've not been quite brave enough to say is that he might actually be earning such priority by a strong final month or so. His season ERA is a fluke, but his recent appearances have been surprisingly drama free. Last 13 games his WHIP has been under 1.
  4. Do road teams bring their own bat boys? I'm assuming it's some local kid, and there's probably some backstory involving his health whereby I felt a little guilty laughing at this observation.
  5. Seems like every time I'm paying attention, Escobar takes a crack at a longball once per at bat. Here, slow runner on first and two outs, 1-1 count, I was saying "go for it". I like his apparent approach - it won't result in extra bases every time, but he has just enough power to make it worth trying.
  6. Gagne was obtained in trade from the Yankees, though in fairness he was developed partly by the Twins. Zoilo started before there was even a draft. As a Cubano, he wouldn't have been eligible for the draft anyway.
  7. Glinda: You don't need to be helped any longer. You've always had the power to go back to Kansas. Dorothy: I have? Scarecrow: Then why didn't you tell her before? Glinda: Because she wouldn't have believed me. She had to learn it for herself. http://www.judygarlandsrubyslippers.com/pictures/rare-letter-from-kent-warner-the-founder-of-the-ruby-slippers.jpg
  8. Probably this has already been covered, but what are the tie-breaks among these three teams? Pairwise, and also if all three tie...
  9. Also... It's deja vu all over again. The future ain't what it used to be. A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore. You can observe a lot by watching. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10208250482726151&set=p.10208250482726151&type=3
  10. I think that latter one predates Yog' by about 50 years or so.
  11. LOL. He's got more chins than a ch-... iiiimpanzee has bananas. Not just pitchers, either. John Kruk had that quote. "I'm not an athlete. I am a major league baseball player."
  12. Indeed. There's little question in my mind that at the high school level, there are plenty of chokers and a handful of clutch players. But the grind of the professional life is such that chokers find themselves out of jobs pretty quickly, and most players who make the Show handle the ups and downs adequately. And why do I think this? Because decades of efforts to find statistical evidence of clutchness in its various guises have turned up empty. Batting average leaders in one year tend with a certain degree of reliability to be the leaders the next year too; ditto for ERA. But measures of clutchness that separate players are far less likely to carry over to the next season; players gain and lose their ability to perform in the clutch seemingly at random. At least, that is my impression of the studies (and meta-studies) I've seen.
  13. All right, this east-coaster is giving up and going to bed. Looks like a winnable game, I'll leave it to the rest of you to bring it in.

  17. Thanks, North. Saved me the need to review the list of candidates.
  18. Terry Ryan used to pitch, right? Let him experience some of the pain for an inning, too.

  21. He came to that last fork in the road, and took it.
  22. I'm not convinced that the bats of any of these prospects is truly ready for 2016.
  23. 23. Molitor's starting lineup fails to make use of this golden opportunity.
