  1. It's not about how good the Twins feel about their fallback plan - it's about convincing the fans that, whatever happens, they'll be competitive, at least until it becomes painfully obvious during the season that they won't. Honestly I don't believe the Twins think they will be competitive next year. They just say otherwise so they don't drive away the ticket buyers.
  2. Does this issue come up as often with other teams' fans? We sure discuss payroll limits a lot as Twins fans.
  3. Pavano, Liriano, and Slowey.
  4. 5 hits over 100 at bats is a pretty big difference. It sounds like less when you phrase it that way, but with an extra .050 of batting average Drew Butera would have hit .248 in 2012, making him a decent every day catcher.
  5. I don't mind going out on a limb... being wrong isn't a crime. However, if and when thrylos98 comes back with another scoop story, he'll have to expect that he won't be taken seriously. I think some are mistaking "piling on" for "good natured ribbing".
  6. I'm not a big fan of Baker so I won't lose sleep over this. Whatever Plan B is, though, I hope it's a good one.
  7. I should have done my homework. But I was too busy thinking about Claire Forlani and scotch.
  8. Evidently the Cubs didn't check with thrylos98's source.
  9. Hmm, a one-year-deal? I'd be surprised if the Cubs' offer was significantly more than the Twins were willing to give Baker. Sounds like Scott didn't want to come back as much as we thought.
  10. Logically, a baseball team wouldn't keep a pitching coach around just because he has a good relationship with a free agent pitcher they're trying to bring in. I remember when the Twins signed Craig Monroe shortly after the 2007 season and it was speculated that he was brought in to try and convince Torii Hunter to stick around so he could play with his buddy. If that was the plan, it didn't work.
  11. I'm not going to crunch this myself right now, but I'd be interested to see the correlation between playoff success and regular season success vs. other playoff qualifying teams.
  12. I'm not taking anything away from the Rays. They're one of the better franchises in baseball. But before anyone crowns them a permanent small market darling, they need to win for more than five years. The Twins posted a decade of winning baseball before bad drafting and picking in the bottom portion of the draft drained their farm system to virtually nothing. The Rays are at the five year mark. Will they continue to win or will they sputter as the Twins did after 2010? Any particular reason we should wait five years, or is that only because the Rays have been successful for the last four and that's not impressive enough? Also... the Twins posted 8 years (less than a decade) of winning baseball in a substantially easier division than the Rays are in. Also... bad drafting is the Twins' fault. Picking in the bottom portion of the first round doesn't excuse that.
  13. I think you've hit on something here - the Twins were no more successful during their run against the Yankees in the regular season than they were in the postseason. The Yankees have missed the playoffs once since 1995. So if the Twins (or any other AL team) wants to be a World Series contender, they're going to have to be able to compete with the Yankees. That means that playing for one run and pitching to contact is not a recipe for postseason success.
  14. I'm sure if I was an ESPN insider I could point out how ZIPS projects Revere, Florimon, Dozier, Carroll, and Plouffe to pick up the slack for all those regressing guys.
  15. Picking nits a little here, but TR didn't select Santana in the Rule 5. The Astros did, then Ryan flipped Jared Camp (who?) for Santana. Still a great move though. To the OP - it's not real exciting to sign minor league free agents, but you should wait until the Twins sign major league free agents to be bothered by it. Every team is signing minor league free agents, we just never hear it because even in those other teams' markets it's not a big story.
  16. Early reviews haven't been great, but the Twins are trying that because they've got more minor league center fielders than minor league center fields to patrol. Law might be right about that.
  17. Shortstop? We've got a three-headed Dozier/Florimon/Field monster there. No space for Cozart.
  18. If they gave out a Silver Slugger for C/1B/DH hybrids, Mauer would have won it hands down.
  19. Kevin Slowey is available! We bring back Baker and Liriano and get Blackburn back on track, and we've got the band back together!
  20. Prediction - Gardy falls in love with Tommy Field.
  21. fify. Well yeah, obvy. But that gets away from the topic. When a free agent is considering destinations, does Minnesota have some kind of negative cachet that would have to be mitigated by more guaranteed money/years/both? If you're Dan Haren, would you take 1 million less to sign with the Yankees than with the Twins?
  22. Which of these two theories do you want to discuss? I think he means the one springs from the other - Minnesota is not an attractive landing spot for free agents, so in order to bring them in the Twins would have to offer more money than other teams.
  23. Really can't trade him for anything right now. The Twins will give him another year to reclaim his status or else they'll remove him from the 40-man and he could potentially latch on somewhere else. I think 2013 will be the year that we find out if Benson is more similar to Torii Hunter or Lew Ford.
  24. During the Metrodome era it provided a convenient excuse that wasn't "we don't want to spend the money". Though some of those teams in the 'Dome were pretty good and I'd guess that they could have signed some more and better free agents if the Twins had put some more money into the team. Until two years ago the Twins weren't any less attractive of a destination than Chicago or Detroit.
