  1. And I'd still consider it a mistake but I think Revere will do better in the NL and that ballpark than he ever would in Target Field. I fully agree, he's made for the NL and that park and a classy organization. I wish him the best. I just don't like the supposed Twins fans on a Twins blog who still want to get one more kick at a guy- who's done nothing wrong- as he's going out the door. Generally, I only kick the player, not the person. I like Revere. He's a blast to watch. He seems like a great guy who just wants to play baseball. But as a player, I don't think he's very good. That doesn't mean I wish him ill or anything, I just don't see his skillset playing out over the longterm. Revere is going to lead the NL East in BIS/9 (Bright Infectious Smiles per 9 innings).
  2. Spot on. IMO, the loss of Revere is more than compensated for by the addition of Worley to the rotation. And May isn't far behind either.
  3. Regardless of how this plays out, I promise not to rip TR for this trade at any point down the line. If this was the get for Revere, I'm kind of surprised we didn't get more for Span.
  4. Worley steps into the rotation immediately. May ought to be ready shortly as well. As far as CF goes, unless the Twins acquire another one, it looks like Hicks is the guy now.
  5. If Meyer is up with the major league team in 2013, it won't be until September when they won't need to burn an option year to have him up. I don't think we'll see him until June of 2014 at the very earliest. And that's hoping against hope that his elbow doesn't explode in the meantime.
  6. No, Holland isn't an ace. He's about on par with Scott Baker in my estimation.
  7. Acquiring Holland would be a great move for TR, but I'm not sure the Twins have the pieces to get a trade done.
  8. Well, yeah, kinda. I believe Cuellar has been credited for helping Liriano a bit when they were together in the minors and since he'll be the Twins bullpen coach this season, you probably aren't far off. That could be factoring in to what the Twins are thinking. Maybe Cuellar could fix Nick Blackburn again while he's at it? http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Nick_Blackburn_turns_to_video_Pitch_FX_in_effort_to_fix_mechanics071912
  9. Ah, the "quantity over quality" approach. I wonder how many of those teams with alleged interest in Liriano want him to work out of the bullpen.
  10. I disagree with you there. As Revere approaches arbitration he'll get somewhat more expensive, and unless you see him having a breakout offensive performance in the near future, his trade value will only decrease.
  11. I'm not a big believer in Revere as a long-term starter in this league. If the demand is there, trade him now.
  12. TR says we're supposed to be realistic about free agent acquisitions. My advice to him is to be realistic about just what kind of upgrade the free agents he's looking at represent. If you're only interested in starters coming over from the NL where they had mediocre results, I'd rather just run out Deduno, Walters, and Blackburn, because the team is going to be awful either way.
  13. Absolutely correct, raindog. It's Ryan's job to try to make the team semi-competitive in 2013 while really doing what is best for the organization long term. That doesn't mean I wouldn't still go after Sanchez and/or Jackson since they are young and will be around for 4-5 years. But spending (and especially overspending) just because it's what others are doing isn't right at all. At some point, overspending isn't overspending anymore. It's what the market price is and any major league GM has to deal with the rules of the game. EXACTLY! I don't know why people think paying market prices for top pitching is "overspending," other than it means paying more than what the Twins have been willing to pay in the past. But just because the Twins have been dumpster diving for years doesn't mean it's "overspending" to pay market price for top pitchers. To assume that when every team gets an extra $25 million in media revenue, it won't result in market prices for top players going up significantly is a pipe dream that no fan should allow his team's ownership to sell to its fanbase without being challenged. The Twins will definitely feel it this season when attendance dips further than 2012. http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Mackey_Will_Twins_compete_in_2013_We_have_to_be_realistic_GM_says120412 For the Twins sake, I hope that season ticket holders and mid-level free agents don't read TR's comments here.
  14. If I'm Haren, and if the money is all equal, I'd rather sign with the Nats than the Twins. Still, where was TR on this? This is a deal the Twins absolutely could have afforded.

  16. If the Pohlads and TR won't shell out for the top-tier pitchers because they're too expensive, then it's time to blow the thing up. If the Twins want to take the budget-ball approach, then Mauer has to go. Keeping the rest of the team status quo and then adding some fringy, bargain-basement starters isn't going to fix anything.
  17. I guess we'll never know. If you can't rip TR for something that you have no intimate knowledge of, then you probably can't praise him for that kind of thing either. Or you can do both. The obvious difference being that Ryan was in the bosses' chair for one of those moves and not the others. OK, we'll put the shoe on the other foot then. Great move by Rizzo. The Nationals probably never wanted Upton anyway, and were just waiting for him to sign so that the Twins' options for trading Span were more limited and the Nats didn't have to give up anything more than one A-ball prospect. The Twins were probably asking for more than Meyers for Span, but when interest from the Braves dried up they were left holding the bag. It's obvious that the Nationals had their eyes on Span all along and were never all that interested in Upton.

  19. We know about as much about the Span/Meyer trade talks as we do about Terry Ryan's role in Bill Smith's regime.
  20. Brock, it sounds like you're praising TR because of the speculation that he waited out the Nationals in order to get Meyer. We don't know what was on the table, if anything, in July. As Nick mentioned, technically Meyer couldn't be traded back then, except as a PTBNL, and I don't think TR would have traded Span for a PTBNL. It's speculation but the timing is hard to deny. The Braves get better by signing the best FA center fielder and two days later, the Nats and Twins finally come to an agreement. The Twins weren't pressured to make the deal; they still had other options to deal Span. It was Rizzo feeling the heat and he's probably the one who caved. You're giving TR way too much credit. The Braves signing Upton hurt the Nationals' options for obtaining a CF, certainly, but it also took the Braves out of the mix as a potential trade partner for the Twins, so it also hurt the Twins' leverage on any potential Span trade.

  22. No reason to extend Revere with Hicks so close. I don't predict any kind of offensive breakthrough from Ben this year anyway.
  23. I don't think the team will be significantly worse. Much of Span's value came from defense and Revere will surpass that. Offensively, it allows us to potentially put a power bat in RF (Parmelee will get first shot but Plouffe and/or Hicks/Arcia will probably get looks there too). It's not like Revere should have had a death grip on RF last year in the first place. The Twins could have put either Parmelee or Plouffe out there last year. So defensively, the outfield is substantially worse. Offensively, you're trading Span for Parmelee. Plouffe was in the lineup already anyways. It's worse, but not as bad as some people are making it out to be. Revere in CF >>>>>>>>>>>>> Span in CF As long as Parmelee can hold his own (I see no reason why he can't) the Twins should be fine out there. I'll agree that Revere is a better defensive center fielder than Span, but not >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> better. I'm just making the point that losing Span and getting no major league players for him makes the 2013 major league team worse than they were at the end of the season.
