  1. I don't think the team will be significantly worse. Much of Span's value came from defense and Revere will surpass that. Offensively, it allows us to potentially put a power bat in RF (Parmelee will get first shot but Plouffe and/or Hicks/Arcia will probably get looks there too). It's not like Revere should have had a death grip on RF last year in the first place. The Twins could have put either Parmelee or Plouffe out there last year. So defensively, the outfield is substantially worse. Offensively, you're trading Span for Parmelee. Plouffe was in the lineup already anyways.
  2. For 2013, this makes the major league team significantly worse than they were at the end of the season. I'm not very confident that Ryan will put together a rotation that will both improve on the 2012 version and compensate for the loss of Span. With that in mind I really think they should trade off some more players. The 2013 Twins have been all but mathematically eliminated.
  3. The answer, of course, is Florimon.
  4. This is my thought as well. Getting one pitcher for Span, one who's probably 2 years away at least, seems to be a bigger gamble than I'd like. I might have taken a lower-ceiling pitcher who was closer to the majors and maybe a fringy infielder thrown in. So it seems that either TR and his scouts really like Meyer, or there just wasn't that much trade interest in Span.
  5. I guess this is the right direction. How many years before Meyer gets a September call-up?
  6. If anyone has a photo of a derailed train handy, now might be a good time to post it.
  7. Just for fun I'll approximate what TR's response would be to that question - "Payroll won't be an obstacle to putting together a contending team. The Twins are committed to winning and the Pohlads have assured us that, if the right opportunity comes along, there will be enough money."
  8. This is one of those "read between the lines" messages to Plouffe, similar to signing Sean Burroughs to push Danny Valencia (boy that worked out great, huh?). TR's telling Plouffe to shape up or be replaced, indirectly through the media. Maybe he said it to Plouffe behind the scenes as well.
  9. I've heard this all before, for the last two seasons when any short-term "stretches of brilliance" from Liriano were tempered by long, arduous, painful stretches of being absolutely brutal. I don't want to try and turn him around again, and I certainly don't want to talk about how talented he is. Confidence is a talent, and one that Liriano doesn't have enough of to be a quality MLB starter.
  10. Don't forget Blackie! We're putting the band back together! With a little health and a little luck, we could go from 96 losses to only 93!
  11. I'll have whatever you are smoking. Sorry bro, I'm all out. Why not run out the terrible pitcher we already have instead of investing in a terrible pitcher we don't have?
  12. No, no, a thousand times no. It's time to give up the ghost on "he's got ace potential" and "if he could only get his head on straight". Liriano is terrible and the Twins should let him be someone else's headache from now on. I'd rather have Cole De Vries, Samuel Deduno, or Nick Blackburn in the rotation. We don't have to throw more bad money at those guys.
  13. Rumor is the Red Sox want Mauer to play first base, not catch. http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/8683859/joe-mauer-trade-target-boston-red-sox If holding on to Mauer means going after the Brett Myerses and Francisco Lirianos in free agency, I say trade him.
  14. As I said, the bad news isn't necessarily that these guys got swooped away from the Twins. The bad news is that if they are getting contracts that the Twins would have been "foolish" to sign, what are the pitchers who actually have any sustained track record of durability or success going to get? They're going to get contracts from teams other than the Twins. That hasn't changed.
  15. I didn't want Baker or Feldman, so I won't rip Ryan for not signing either of them. However, I'd definitely be critical if TR went out and signed those two and another Jason Marquis while claiming that he's put together a rotation that can be competitive in 2013. What he needs to do is trade some veterans for young talent and accept the rebuilding process.
  16. Good point. It seems more like a conga line.
  17. I'm not ready to give up on Dozier, but I think he's more suited to second base. He's at least got somewhat of a track record of hitting. Did you know that Juan Castro was a better hitter in the minor leagues than Pedro Florimon?
  18. Poor TR. How's he supposed to put together a contending rotation on a shoestring budget now?
  19. The Twins could have had more TV revenue but they wouldn't play ball with the cable providers when they launched Victory Sports.
  20. Poor Lance's cockpit was positioned inside of Voltron's right knuckles. The one that held the Blazing Sword and swung around a lot. That must have been nauseating.
  21. No thanks to Myers. We're talking about giving a year with an option (or even 2 years?) to a guy who's been a mediocre starter in the NL and has since been converted to a reliever. And since becoming a reliever, his K/9 has actually decreased. I know the Astros have been a poorly run organization recently, but they know this guy better than the Twins do... and the Astros didn't want Myers in their awful rotation.
  22. I don't get the point of trading Span and getting Billy Hamilton back. It's a sideways move and the Twins already have a center field logjam. I'd want a middle infielder instead.
  23. Welcome to Minnesota!
  24. Even if Figgins played up to his ability, he'd still be redundant with Carroll already around.
