    I fully endorse this move. "Intriguing" or "a joy to watch" (copyright Dick Bremer) are the kinds of things you say about a guy who you just have to trot out there because you don't have better options.

    I don't have them doing anything there either this offseason as I believe their goal of solid defense is in place and will suffice for now. Once they know what they have for pitching next year and see how Arcia, Hicks, and Parmalee develop I can see one of them being traded either in July next year or next offseason for a SS. If the idea is to trade for a shortstop, there's no reason not to do it now before investing a stack of cash in starting pitchers. What's weird about Mackey's blueprint is that he's got Dozier playing half the time and Florimon less than that, and yet that's his optimal lineup. They're in the lineup but he's projecting them to be terrible. He also says this: "• The Twins scored 701 runs offensively last season, which ranked mid-pack. That figure likely would have been closer to 750 had 15% of the team's plate appearances not been swallowed up by black holes (Brian Dozier, Pedro Florimon, Danny Valencia, Alexi Casilla)." What I'd like to know is, how did Dozier and Florimon's stock rise to the point that we're ready to hand the keys to the car over to them?

    He's got Dozier starting at 2B and getting 450 PAs and Florimon starting at SS and getting 340 PAs... but no new middle infielders.

    Hardy was a pansy who missed too much time with that little wrist boo-boo he "had". Also he's slow. But seriously, I don't think Dozier has the defensive ability to stick at shortstop and I think Florimon is Juan Castro v2. Whoever the Twins shortstop of the future is, I don't think he's on the roster right now.

    The same people will snark about the Twins being idiots for letting Blackburn go if he pitches well elsewhere. If Nick Blackburn catches on with another team and turns his career around, I promise I won't rip the Twins for losing him in that unlikely scenario.

    Opening day? Maybe not, but I think Hicks could give De Vries and Deduno a run for their money in that rotation.

    Who says you have to commit 3 years to Baker? No one, that is what we are trying to say...Thyroid broke the story, before the story happened, and we are saying debating whether or not this is a good idea committing 3 years to him (which is what Thyroid Gland broke on his twitter account). Yeah, I know - I was comparing this to what Marcum or Guthrie might get. I think three years is a lot for Baker right now. Not everybody comes back from TJ surgery right away, and not everybody is ever the same. I'd give him a year with an option and tell Scott to test the market if he wants more. Baker wasn't exactly the durable type even before the surgery.

    Well, ignoring the obvious insinuation of steroid use, I can think of 2 reasons - he's been healthier this year than he has in the last six seasons, and Joe Girardi hid Chavez from left-handed pitching.

    I expect the Twins to sign Baker again, but three years for a guy coming off TJ surgery? I don't buy it. Seems silly for the Twins to bid against themselves like that. I don't think any other team would offer him three years on the market right now.

    I disagree with TR. My 2nd priority would be upgrading at shortstop.

    can anyone tell me the last time curly made a good trade? If you even bothered to remember AJ for Nathan and Liriano worked out pretty good, Romero for Casilla wasn't exactly a bad trade. Picking up Castillo and Stewart for very little worked out. Trading for decent minor leaguers or players with 1-2 years service has been Ryan's specialty. Trading veterans after their fifth season was also what he did. For what Ryan traded in the past he did not have leading up to 2012. Actually Ryan has done pretty well in trades. It's the free agency side he's been behind on. Buck Buchanan for Jason Bartlett was a pretty good trade, as was Eric Milton for Carlos Silva and Nick Punto. Maybe not blockbuster deals, but the Twins definitely didn't lose those trades.

    So... if Nick Blackburn is selected in the Rule 5 draft, does the selecting team pay his $5 million salary? 'Cause that would be great if someone would do that for the Twins.

    Criticize Bill Smith all you want, TR had a lot of stinker 1st round picks too. Remember BJ Garbe, Adam Johnson, Matt Moses, Matthew Fox, Jay Rainville, and Hank Sanchez? Me neither.

    So if the Twins signed Marcum and then brought back Liriano and Baker, the offseason would be somewhat of a success? That rotation looks an awful lot like the one the Twins had going in to 2012. The one that didn't look good on paper to begin with.

    Did I hear Bruce Chen? Maybe the Twins could work out a trade with the Royals for Chen. He's only under contract through 2013 for 4.5 million.

    I don't think either Dozier or Florimon has played enough for us to be able to look at their defensive metrics and be convinced that they are or aren't good defenders. I think that putting Dozier at 2B would give him a somewhat better chance at being successful, at least defensively. But he still has to hit.

    Fangraphs lists Dozier's range at .796. That puts him between Aybar and Reyes. Florimon at .757. Fangraphs lists lots of things, including numbers that are meaningless or can be misleading. Dozier's UZR was -1.2 and Florimon's was 1.4.
