  1. To start? No, I've seen enough of that. I think the Twins should be targetting better pitchers than Liriano. De Vries and Deduno may be better than Frankie at this point. I'd consider bringing him back as a reliever, but not for that much money.
  2. Gotta bring someone in to push Plouffe to play better. Sean Burroughs did a great job lighting a fire under Danny Valencia.
  3. The obvious spot to improve the offense is the middle infield. I'm not real enthusiastic about Carroll, Florimon, Escobar, and Dozier sharing those positions.
  4. Compared to the league average for shortstops of .674? Or the Twins shortstops' .580? You apparently didn't read the 2nd half of my post. I like Hardy and he is obviously is better then anything the Twins have put out at SS the past two years, but I am not so sure that I would want him here currently on his 3 year 21 mil contract. I think two more years of Hardy (he's burned up one of those contract years already) at $7 million per isn't bad value at all. According to Fangraphs (and admittedly I'm not a huge fan of this statistic) he was worth $12.5 million this year, WITH his .671 OPS.
  5. I don't see Mauer as a Hank Aaron award winning type. If there was a Wade Boggs award, Mauer would win it every year.
  6. If and when the Twins pitching acquisitions don't work out, I hope we're not supposed to take consolation in knowing they didn't spend a lot of money.
  7. Nick, I was wondering if you've heard LEN3's assertion (he's repeated it on the radio and in print several times) that Jeremy Guthrie will get a contract approaching $10m/year.
  8. Don't look now because Houston may bring the AL West down a bit. The Yankees will always be good. I think the Orioles are for real and the Rays are solid. The Red Sox are just a major spending spree from being relevant again. IMO, the AL East will be the best division for the forseeable future.
  9. All very very true. I do think that Span will be traded, but I think the Twins would be better off sniping an AA or AAA pitcher for him than one who's already established. That is, if they can identify a guy who is ready to take the next step.
  10. I think you're on to something with Redmond - I expect him to be interviewed. I like Hatcher a little but I think Brunansky has the inside track on the hitting coach opening and I don't know what other role Hatcher might get. The pattern is that guys who have Twins connections get the first crack in this organization. I bet Matt LeCroy will be considered.
  11. I don't think we're really disagreeing necessarily. I just think the Rays could get a better offer for Shields than Span. The Rays are constantly looking to unload payroll and trading Shields for Span doesn't really accomplish that. I think they'd be more likely to take Hicks for Shields straight up than Span for Shields. Also, I don't think Ben Revere has much trade value at all.
  12. It's going to take more than Span to get Shields. It shouldn't take much more and if it does, pass. Tampa Bay would get three years of Span for approximately the same money that the Twins would get Shields for two years. Outside of a great 2011, Shields is not an "ace" by any stretch of the imagination. He's good but not great. I don't know why forum posters are so high on the guy... He's basically a healthy Scott Baker that strikes out half a guy more every nine innings. So, he's Scott Baker, except significantly better than Scott Baker? Do you think other teams would be willing to give up more than Span to get Shields? Because if they would, there's no reason for the Rays to trade Shields for Span and maybe a throw-in. Shields has an option on his contract for $12 million in 2014, and it's not out of the realm of possibility that whichever team has him at that point would gladly pick that option up. Span likely won't ever earn more than $10 million in a season. Point is, starting pitching is more valuable on the market than outfielders.
  13. It's going to take more than Span to get Shields.
  14. Ryan's got a pretty sweet gig if he can give himself a promotion like that.
  15. .500 would have been a lofty goal with the rotation set up as it was originally. Liriano, Blackburn, and Marquis DID stay healthy. Baker and Pavano... do you think that, combined, they were worth 15 more wins than the replacements? I don't.
  16. Ryan, Gardenhire, and Anderson deserved more scrutiny than any of those guys.
  17. Fired? Wasn't his contract up anyway? I think it would be more accurate to say he won't be brought back. He's close to retiring anyway - isn't he about 120 years old?
  18. Most interesting angle may be that this is likely Vizquel's last game.
  19. What do you think would make a better statue, hat-toss Gardy or hang-dog dugout railing Gardy? But seriously... they'll announce they're firing AAA coach Gene Glynn. He just didn't have the kids ready when they were needed.
  20. The Twins are not going to be able to sign a top of the rotation pitcher this year as a free agent. Right now there is not one on the market. The suspects mentioned by many of the posters are good pitchers, but not great. Not a one that has won 20 games once or 15 twice. When you look at the history of free agent pitchers it is littered with more busts than potentially great pitchers rising into stars. To invest in a star power pitcher, the Twins will have to trade for a pitcher and hope he develops into one. Do you trade a Sano, Rosario, Kepter or Buxton for that player? That is what it would take to get a pitcher capable of being a star. Look what Washington gave up to get Gonzales. The scrap heap includes players not happy with what was offered and may sign a one year deal to prove themselves. This is exactly the approach the Twins have had for as long as I can remember. And it hasn't produced a whole lot. I think Span will be traded for a pitcher, but I think Twins fans will be disappointed with the kind of pitcher that Span will bring back. I don't see them trading any of their young position prospects. What I see is a #3 or 4 added through a Span trade, and another Ponson/Ortiz combo brought in. Maybe the pitching will develop over time, but certainly not in time to compete in 2013.
  21. The starting rotation is the obvious culprit, but the Twins haven't provided any recent evidence that they're willing to invest in it. Big league teams have to face the big league reality that big league pitchers cost big league dollars. If the Twins try and rebuild their rotation with cheap youngsters and scrap-heap veterans, it'll be lather, rinse, repeat for 2013.
  22. I can see where Seth falls here because his "Half-Full" outline is realistic and his "Half-Empty" one is exaggerated. Half-Full - The Twins rotation will be just fine. Scott Baker will be back and contribute all season, Kyle Gibson will jump right in and be a ROY candidate, and Nick Blackburn will be the Viagra Comeback Player of the Year, so no starting rotation additions are necessary.
  23. ] Gil Meche retired with 2 years and almost 24 million left on his contract with the Royals.
  24. He wasn't a big part of either year. The Twins have played 318 games in 2011 and 2012. Nishioka appeared in only 71 of those games. The Twins record on those games? 31-40 Record with no Nishi? 97-150. To be clear, I'm not denying Nishi was awful. Clearly, he was. But there's plenty of blame to go around for 2 seasons of sucktastic baseball, and pinning it all on Nishi is turning a blind eye to the myriad of other problems with this team. Yeah, I'm not saying Nishioka is responsible for the 2011 disaster. But he was a bigger part of that team than the 2012 team. Actutally, I think the Twins stuck with him too long in 2011. But what I was quoting was the poster who said Nishioka is a big part of the 2011 and 2012 disasters, which is somewhat less than half-true.
