  1. I feel like I'd really hate Hawk if I was a White Sox fan and he called every one of my team's games. But from the outside looking in, he's such a clownish homer that it's hard not to be entertained, especially when the Sox are losing.
  2. I'd tell them to keep the outfielder and give me at least one better pitcher.
  3. Most season ticket holders are smart enough to know that standing pat on the Morneau situation isn't going to make this team any more competitive next year than they are right now. Hell, they already have Morneau and it doesn't matter. If they can unload some of that salary, they might be able to sign players who would drive season ticket sales better than Morneau.
  4. $9 million option.
  5. 1-year deal with incentives up to 7 or 8 mil. No 2nd year option. I doubt he'll start the season on a roster.
  6. Radke was drafted in 1991, which is a long time ago. Garza pitched all of 133 innings for the Twins. Santana and Liriano both came to the Twins in trades, which you can give the scouts credit for, but they were major league ready when the Twins got them.
  7. Not many pitchers in that bunch.
  8. I was partially agreeing with you before, Cap'n, but "average runs scored based on whom the starting catcher was", or ARSBOWTSCW, is a new statistic to me that needs more research before I would consider such numbers to be meaningful.
  9. I'm not convinced that, even if Butera turned Blackburn into a serviceable starter, that the difference would offset the offensive hit the lineup would take from removing either Mauer or Doumit and inserting Drew. I get what you're saying, and I admit that Butera is a better defensive catcher than Mauer and a much better catcher than Doumit. I do think there is some truth to catchers' ERA, but I don't think it's nearly as big a difference as the numbers you've presented would posit to suggest.
  10. Drew Butera hasn't caught Nick Blackburn once this season. That may result in some unfair catcher ERA numbers for Doumit and Mauer.
  11. Well, for one thing, those numbers for each of Mauer, Doumit, and Butera are skewed because they're not catching the same pitchers. Butera's caught every game Liriano has started since he was promoted from the bullpen. I think Gardy keeps putting Butera behind the plate for Liriano's starts as one of those "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" things. I think Butera has about as much to do with Liriano's recent success as the "M" logo caps do.
  12. The Twins have all the time in the world to trade Sano if that's what they want to do. He's not even been playing particularly well recently, so his stock may be down right now.
  13. I like Butera. He plays with a lot of enthusiasm, like every game might be his last (and if he was playing for any other team, that might very well be the case). Thing is, he's a minor league catcher. That's not a crime. If the Twins really need a third catcher, they could probably find a defensive specialist who hits better than Butera.
  14. If the Twins have the money to spend on Hunter, they should probably invest it in pitching instead.
  15. "A ton" is relative when talking about Yankees prospects. They're frequently overrated.
  16. I'm not trying to dump on Anderson, but Cuellar's advice is being put out there as some kind of deus ex machina. And if Cuellar's that good, then HE should be the pitching coach of the Twins. But truthfully I think the Twins are just oversimplifying Blackburn's issues.
  17. How come Rick Anderson, in the last 2 1/2 years, never told Blackburn to throw the cutter more?It might (probably) won't work, but if he got away from using a good pitch, I would think that Anderson would have noticed...
  18. At the time, and admittedly I don't have a link to back this up, I believe Gutierrez was starting out of college but the Twins made it clear they intended to make him a reliever.
  19. Gutierrez is hurt now, and time will tell if he'll pan out, but I'm not a big fan of drafting a reliever that high. And Shooter Hunt has a good baseball name but was a spectacular bust.
  20. Well, Perkins and Burton got a day off. That's kind of like a win.
  21. I saw a brick wall and couldn't help myself from slamming my head into it repeatedly.
  22. That is very correct. An American atheist could, by converting to Christianity, join a majority group.
  23. Seems like this is a bad place to have this discussion, but of course minority groups can be based on beliefs. Religious groups (or in this case, non-religious groups) are minorities if they're not the biggest group.
  24. Hmmm... if you're going to start Doumit in the outfield, wouldn't you be better off putting him in right and moving Revere to left?
  25. 1. Diamond 2. Baker 3. Blackburn and then a couple dumpster-dive moves. Maybe Jeff Francis and Bartolo Colon.
