  1. This is true, on most other teams Blackburn would not have gotten so many chances. You made me think of this - http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Gardenhire_says_Nick_Blackburn_in_rotation_Hes_one_of_my_guys030511
  2. That's pretty close to the career hitting lines of HOFers Dave Winfield and Eddie Murray.
  3. The way Blackburn's been pitching, he's not a #5 starter on any team. Fun with stats - for his career, opponents are hitting .300/.343/.470 off of Nick Blackburn.
  4. Looks like an intimidating dude.
  5. No, not unless the player the Bucs receive is Blackburn.
  6. That's interesting. I wonder what variables feed that disparity - more home runs go to left field than right field? Worse defenders on the whole in left than in right?
  7. I like Morneau's confidence. Hubris always pays off.
  8. This might have been a good day to give Morneau a rest.
  9. If home runs can be reviewed, there's no reason that catches in foul territory can't be. There's no issue of placement of baserunners on a call like this. It's not the worst call ever, though. I've seen plenty that are just as bad.
  10. One easy way to keep Mauer fresh is to start him at 1B against tough lefties. That would also limit Morneau's exposure to same-sided pitching.
  11. I don't think Ben's going to turn a power-hitting corner and be a remotely similar player to Puckett. He might hit a handful of homers during his career. What would really increase his value is to take more walks. I realize that as a singles-hitter that pitchers aren't afraid to throw him strikes, and that he's pretty good at making contact, but Ben swings at pitches out of the zone a bit too much for my liking.
  12. The Twins went on a mini-run prior to the All-Star break last season and had themselves convinced they could compete. They could have cashed in on some outgoing veteran players at that point but didn't. I don't want a repeat of that this year. Whether the Twins run off a few games now or not, the meaningful part of their season is over.
  13. I like outside-the-box thinking. Just not when that kind of thinking decreases pitch counts by 25%. I'd rather see a six-man rotation and stretch them out to 115 pitches each. But I don't think this is a long-term philosophical change for the Rockies, anyway - more like an on the fly adjustment.
  14. Looks like it's pretty much official now. Good for Duensing. In every role he's had he's been a trooper about it. I still like him better as a reliever, but whatever - it really doesn't matter.
  15. The Twins pride themselves on their loyalty to their own people. I can respect that, but... The Royals have been in rebuilding mode forever, and have taken criticism for not sticking with a blueprint long enough for it to come to fruition. The Twins are the antithesis of the Royals, in that they had a successful blueprint and are too loyal/haughty/stubborn to adjust it. Things have changed since the Twins made their run, from new players, a new GM, a new old GM, a new ballpark, and wholesale changes to division rivals. But the Twins philosophy is still etched in stone. At some point loyalty becomes myopic. I don't know if the Twins are quite there yet, but the last two seasons aren't good signs.
  16. I am not on board with trading Perkins. I believe he'll be a part of the next contending Twins team, and the Twins aren't going to get enough return in a trade for him that it would be worth it. Burton... I think he's done it with a bit of smoke and mirrors. I could listen on trade offers for him, but I don't believe the Twins would get much at all for Burton.
  17. Thank you. I accept your apology.
  18. http://th283.photobucket.com/albums/kk319/onesuperchef/th_booboo1.jpg
  19. How long before the myth that Target Field is pitcher-friendly wears off? Any ballpark where the Twins are taking almost half of all plate appearances will look pitcher-friendly.
  20. No GM is going to trade for Blackburn, so we're stuck with him through next season. $5.5 million is ridiculous for a back-end starter. PJ Walters wasn't great but he's at least as good as Blackburn, and he was picked up on the scrap heap for pennies.
  21. As you said, there really isn't an optimal platoon partner for Morneau on the roster right now. But even if there was, Gardy wouldn't do it.
  22. Gardy has never liked to platoon. And he'd definitely not want to platoon one of his veteran guys. If you don't put Morneau in the lineup against lefties, the manager is reinforcing Justin's belief that he can't hit same-sided pitching. That's the theory, anyway.
  23. I like to call Scott Diamond "Big Spot Scott".
  24. I'm pretty sure most thought that the Twins rotation was pretty weak, even with a healthy Baker. There weren't a whole lot of available starters, especially those that would fit under the Twins' self-imposed salary cap. But to say most thought the rotation was relatively solid is incorrect.
  25. Spanny, Benny, Joey, Willy, Morny, Doomy, Plouffey, Dozy, and Jamey.
