  1. Well, there is the possibility that Suzuki wants more money to stay in Minnesota because the team around him is bad. He doesn't have to take the offer. If the Twins offer 2/$15, and Suzuki's camp comes back with 3/$24, do you still do it?
  2. I think that 2/15 would be an overpay for Suzuki. Also, Suzuki has to agree to it. It sounds like he wants more than that anyway.
  3. Honestly I don't see a Suzuki trade or extension happening now. I think they'll hold on to him for the rest of the season hoping to work out a new contract. Willingham and Correia will be traded in August.
  4. The one that really gets me now - the manager strolling out to the field to stall for time while the bench coach reviews the video to determine if they want to challenge or not.
  5. I don't know how far back we want to take this "luck" matter involving the Twins, but I'm not seeing anyone make the argument that, in some cases, the Twins have been lucky. Hughes and Suzuki have proven to be lucky free agent acquisitions, outperforming all predictions by a significant margin. Sano was signed by the Twins. At the time, the Twins were not really considered favorites for him. The Astros drafted somebody else, dropping Buxton right in to the Twins' lucky, lucky hands. Who would the Twins have drafted if the Astros had decided to take Buxton? Appel? The Dodgers were willing to give up a decent prospect for Drew Butera. I could go on... sure they've had their share of bad luck, too, but... consider the Cubs. How unlucky are they?
  6. The Twins were very lucky that Pelfrey was halfway decent for a couple months in 2013.
  7. The hypothetical new GM would still need to put the roster together, and chances are it wouldn't be exactly how we're projecting it at this point as filled with Ryan's (and Smith's) players. That's precluding any trades or FA acquisitions between now and then. So the correct answer is "some".
  8. I think many of us are in the "we'll believe it when we see it" mode regarding the vaunted Twins minor league system. In the AL Central we've been hearing for almost 30 years how many great prospects the Royals have, and how they're just on the cusp. Jim Pohlad said it recently that "any player who is not here yet is not a player". Some of the minor league prospects will make it big, some will flame out, and some will make it but never live up to the lofty expectations we have for them. Even if they all pan out, the questions remain whether they'll be good enough to challenge for a title, or whether the GM will supplement them with the right pieces they need.
  9. With how protective the Twins have been in monitoring Meyer's pitch counts, I think he'll be up later this season, but only in a relief role.
  10. I think they figure they already burned one of Polanco's option years when they called him up earlier.
  11. I don't disagree with the importance of having some veterans on the team when there's a youth movement going on. Thing is, the Twins already had a lot of veterans. They're actually middle-of-the-pack as far as average player age. Mauer, Willingham, Suzuki, Correia, Nolasco, Burton, Duensing, etc. aren't exactly cutting their teeth. What kind of leadership could be added by bringing in Bartlett, Guerrier, and Kubel seems dubious. I'm not against bringing in veterans if it improves the team, but I don't want them brought in for sentimental reasons.
  12. It's really a numbers game in my opinion. The Twins had several AAA starters besides Meyer and May that have had good years (Pino, Johnson, and Darnell). That's not so much the case with the position players. If there were more older non-prospect position players doing well at AAA the Twins probably would have had them up in front of Hicks and Pinto, for example. I believe they always prefer to keep a guy in the minors until they have absolutely no option but to call them up. I don't always agree with that strategy, but I've seen a lot of Terry Ryan's general managing and that seems to be a recurring theme.
  13. I get the point that it's good business to shop Perkins. It sure seems to me like the goal posts have been moved back at least another season, considering Sano and Buxton have lost an entire year of development each and it would appear that neither Meyer nor May is in a position to pitch any meaningful major league innings this year. Perkins says all the right things about wanting to stay here, but it doesn't look like 2015 will be the Twins' year either now. He's looking at at least one more season of being the closer of an irrelevant team. Maybe he'd like to win now.
  14. Trades in August get more complicated as the Twins wouldn't be able to necessarily choose which teams they want to deal with. That doesn't matter much regarding Morales, Willingham, or Correia, none of whom will bring back much anyway. But IMO Suzuki needs to be traded before the end of July.
  15. I have reservations about Mientkiewicz as a manager after his on-field fistfight.
  16. I would think that Herrmann's greatest value would be his ability to catch, but even in AAA this year he's been more of an outfielder. I get that there's some value in positional flexibility, but in Herrmann's case I'd like to see them focus on catching, because as a spot-starting corner outfielder he's not very valuable.
  17. After hearing Dozier and Perkins recently talk about how the Twins are much improved and have a real shot, it's a splash of cold water in the face. Kind of refreshing.
  18. We've been waiting for Sano to come up and force the Twins' hand on this, but... I expect Plouffe to be signed to a new contract and Sano moved to left field.
  19. IMO, if you're going to sign Suzuki again (and it's going to take at least a two-year commitment), you're pretty much waving the white flag on Pinto ever being the catcher and you might as well trade him. Two more years in AAA or more time as a backup/part-time DH isn't going to help Pinto's development. If you trade Pinto soon, I bet some other team would take a chance on him being a starting-caliber catcher.
  20. The Twins were lucky to be able to pick up Fuld. The consternation over losing Presley and Mastroianni had more to do with the Twins deciding to marry Aaron Hicks (and Jason Bartlett) as their centerfield options than anything else.
  21. I think the fan base was jaded by the Livan Hernandez, Sidney Ponson, and Ramon Ortiz signings and KC reminded them of those guys who were brought in as back-of-the-rotation "innings-eaters." KC has stayed healthy and pitched OK so the criticism seems to have died down.
  22. I think there's a pretty good chance that Suzuki, after the season he's having, wouldn't want to take an extension mid-season from the Twins when he could sign with a real contender in the offseason. I also don't think it's a great idea to sign Suzuki to an extension at his all-time high value.
  23. The market is setting up perfectly for the Twins to trade Suzuki. I hope they don't fool themselves into thinking that a) they're a playoff factor and Suzuki will continue to hit way above his career marks.
  24. Lot of good points being made here, and not to be a drip, but I've got to dig back several pages for any mention of Worley.
  25. If Cuddyer represents the best way to upgrade the lineup, go ahead and sign him. What I don't want is for the Twins to sign him primarily for sentimental reasons. One of my biggest pet peeves with the Twins organization is their nostalgia at the expense of forward-thinking.
