All teams do it even the Twins. I believe they are used as fillers until some one else better comes especially non contenders. Maybe you have one high impact arm & the other 4 stinks it makes sense to trade 1 high impact arm for some good arms

I don`t like to disagree w/ Seth but I don`t think Bailey will not be able to produce as well as Gibson or Perez in 2019, he doesn`t have the ability to SO & his style isn`t advantageous to the Twins even w/ Donaldson. But I totally agree that w/ this offense will produce an excellent opportunity for this year & years to come to give young pitchers a chance to prove themselves. Like I stated before we need more impact arms (on page 2, I gave my reasons & examples) so why not trade w/ Pirates & or Marlins for some high upside projects for now & future. Near the end of the deadline we can evaluate, keep what will be an impact arm & trade what won`t

I think almost all our prospects since Mauer have been late bloomers ( Berrios might be exception). Many great prospects were let go or traded for nothing because they lost patience in them ( Aaron Hicks) or they didn`t fit in their philosophy ( David Ortiz ) . Now present philosophy & technology I believe will help bring up prospect & evaluate them faster, cutting down on mistakes. I think Gordon will improve this season but I see him having difficulty to adjust to the big league & he`ll never be more than average. Hope I`m proven wrong

What History Tells Us About Third Basemen Moving to First Base
Doctor Gast commented on Andrew Luedtke's blog entry in Thoughts from The Catch
I believe Sano has soft hands & quickness to be come a very good 1B man plus the athleticism & willingness to learn will be a great asset. His fault is the inability to range left on grounders which won`t matter now although ranging right could be. I think he could be very good on pop ups except maybe going back (we`ll have to see), scooping low throws & maybe handling high throws. He`ll have to learn to handle cut offs. Hopefully the transition won`t affect his hitting but once he hit his groove everything will fall in place- 6 comments

I really doubt that! Although thee Marlins might have 1 or 2 that would be nice & hopefully they`re open to trade. The Pirates have Archer & Stratten which would be great project for Wes Johnson. Both clubs have last year Twins coaches which could facilitate the deals. Ray & Gray could be available towards the end of the deadline

I agree w/ everybody. Could we get by w/o another impact arm? I think yes but if we want to excel we definitely need an impact arm. All the pitchers we had last year petered out (some more than others) except Pineda which started slow & got better & then didn`t finish. We don`t have anyone that can start strong & finish strong unless Berrios steps it up a notch. I believe to maximize our pitchers we need to use more often "the opener" the pitcher don`t have to pace themselves but go full bore & to give those who need it added rest. I love the way the Twins used the revolving door rotating pitchers from AAA to ML in that scenario we can`t have enough pitchers. To start the year we don`t have Hall (there is possibility he won`t come back) & Pineda, I`d want to groom Graterol as starter so that could mean him starting at AAA to perfect his secondary pitches. & w/ all these pitchers someone will most likely get hurt. I don`t want to limit the pitching coaches from taking on present & future possibility projects that they deem high upside.

Front Page: Josh Donaldson, Bringer of Rings

I`m looking forward to watching Donaldson in a Twins uniform! This is officially a successful off season! -
I agree it seems a little crowded. But we a need another impact pitcher, in that case we need to trade off some of our prospects like Gordon which don`t have a clear future here. In that case there would be room for him. To me he has a lot of low cost upside which could offset a salary which we need to pay an impact arm. Detroit has a lot of ML ready prospects

Thank you so much! very interesting article you wrote. I believe it`s a valuable tool for scouting & pitcher development. & like you said there probably a few high spin rate pitchers that have been taught to pitch low & they are being clobbered that where good coaching needs to come in

I think Sano`s defense will get better next year if he doesn`t hurt himself again this year. If Donaldson doesn`t sign w/ us which is a good chance, I suggest going after a very good SS instead of 3B or 1B. A good SS can cover any inadequacies of 3B & 2B. I`d shift Polanco to 2B & Arraez to 1B. & use Gonzalez as much as possible . Shifting also effects the numbers

For more precise discussion I decided to open this blog. I have great hopes for Graterol! What we need most is starting pitching, we need him to work on what needs to be worked on thru spring training & minors until he`s ready. Then take him slow, maybe use him as an opener & gradually increase his innings. He has pretty good spin rate. Seems like most of the top pitchers both SP & RP have high spin rates. All top pitching teams are going after (Astros, Indians & Rays) high spin pitchers. Can high spin rate be taught? High strike zone pitchers like ODO do well w/ high spin rate it seems. Don`t you think that the go after high spin rate pitchers? Chris Stratton, Pirates has very high spin rates & isn`t pursued. Any issues he may have can be worked on. I`m anxious to hear from others in what you think!

Thank you for this blog, hopefully we`ll have many good years ahead of us. One suggestion, maybe we can have Rosario sub DH whenever Cruz needs a break

Defense Evaluation - Luis Arraez
Doctor Gast commented on TwerkTwonkTwins's blog entry in Ryan Stephan's Twinpinions
Thank you for addressing this problem that many people don`t like to address. Our largest problem is at SS. Even if he improves at 2B we need a SS that could make up the ground that Sano, Polanco & Arraez can`t ( their bats are great!). I don`t know if he ever will be a very good fielder so I agree to have him as a utility player. We could have him sub at 1st to give him more at bats- 4 comments

Relief Provided in a Big Year for Twins
Doctor Gast commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Yes! I applaud what was done to the BP. Expect great things from them. I`ve been down on the SP this year but looking what was done w/ the BP, I believe the same can be done to the SP, at least hope so- 2 comments

I know Berrios case will be resolved, hopefully he`ll sign a good extension. But to call this a successful off season, we need to have an improvement this coming year. BP is improved but SP & defense are slightly inferior. We need another pitcher w/ impressive upside & or good glove at 1B or 3B or SS, preferably SS

Makes total sense to at least start a dialogue w/ Chicago, to see what`ll it cost.

Seems like I`m always beating the same drum. I`d like to explore more the SS position that`s where I think we need the most help (if we don`t sign Donaldson). Before Polanco came up, it was thought he`d play 2B because of his defense & we had a SS. Like Elliot stated & I`ve stated before Polanco could make that transition like Dozier & become a gold glove at 2B. I`ve always like Story SS & Gray SP from Colorado I`d love to see that trade although I don`t think they will trade until at deadline. But I`d like also to see what other options at SS
-
Yeah I was surprised w/ that after PS & WS we came up #4 go figure. So far I see it as a failure because I was expecting FO to improve areas where we were needed improvement. Right now we are almost "status quo" I don`t believe that will cut it. But if they improve our infield defense & or starting rotation then it will be a success
-
If nothing changes like author states, he suggests Gonzalez to play 3B which I believe is the best solution too. People argue that Gonzalez bat isn`t good enough which I disagree. Late spring training gave Gonzalez a slow start. A full ST will give him better preparation to start stronger. But I`m hoping that a trade at 3B or SS will happen, still I believe pitching is the priority

Cubans have done well here (Tony Oliva). It`d be very interesting to see how he develop into a pitcher. If he does work out as a pitcher he could be valuable working some innings in National league games plus keeping him loose w/ some relief pitching. He could also play some 1B when he isn`t pitching

I`d like to thank you again for providing this avenue of info & forum in what`s going on w/ the Twins, especially on the off season. It`d be boring w/o you. -
I really like Sano, He`s big, strong, cannon for an arm & very quick for a big man. Sometimes he amazes me at 3B, they had moved him to RF for a short time & he was very open to that so he very easy to deal with. He needs to grow up more & don`t do anything stupid like getting hurt while goofing around. Hopefully a full year including spring training he can cut down on his errors. That said I don`t thing they can improve his lateral movement. Hope he can shorten his swing especially after the 1st strike, that will help lower his SOs & improve his contacts. He so strong, he doesn`t have to hit it that hard for it to go out, he could even hit more HRs
