Raya should get a look this season, likely in August but surely in September. Matthews is more than ready. He totally dominated an I-Cubs team full of players who will hold down positions in MLB at some point. Perhaps he is on the mound versus Colorado this weekend.

Dear Falvey, You Can't Trade Away Joe Ryan
tony&rodney replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We can check back on how things went in October. Right now, and really thus far in the season, pitching has been solid overall. The main concerns have been poor defense, sparse offense, slow position players, and shoddy base-running. No team in baseball has too much pitching. The Twins are better off than most. If the Twins continue to maintain the same collection of position players and roll it back, again, next year we can not expect anything better than dull baseball.- 41 replies

Dealing Ryan? Let’s look back at the Berrios deal.
tony&rodney commented on jorgenswest's blog entry in Blog jorgenswest
Trading any player is not surrender or giving up. The idea is to improve the team. The point in the post was that Ryan should require more than Berrios if traded. I agree. Ryan only is traded for a very significant return. The strength of the team is pitching. The position side is weak. No major return, no deal for Ryan. There are teams that actually need a starting pitcher like Joe Ryan desperately. Hold them to the fire.- 30 comments

Philly is in a really tough position. They have a very good team but lack a closer and could also use a couple of part time players along with a middle relief pitcher. Meanwhile they are taking a stance on a Painter that may box them in. With their top starting pitching being excellent and a number of players at their prime, Philadelphia faces a very difficult trading deadline. They want to win it all and have a reduced chance without adding a couple of players. I predict their demise in the playoffs without any substantial additions. The Twins and Guards can offer quite the packages and demand a premium return. No Painter equals no deals with Cleveland or Minnesota. What is the best deal for all?

A couple of people have been making suggestions for several years now that changes to the roster needed to be made to have a competitive team worth watching by the wider public. Perhaps a dribble instead of a torrent. However, your general point is acceptable. Talent plays. The time to strike was during each of the last two winters when any number of Twins had high value. There was that brief moment when the front office did engage in the Lopez-Arraez trade. Did Miami initiate those conversations? I actually don't believe that matters. Currently the roster carries too many players suited for the DH position which is an anchor on the pitching staff. Don't despair though because opportunities pop up on a routine basis. Perhaps the interest in some current Twins from other teams will awaken a pulse in the front office. The next two weeks should be a final exam for them (FO).

No, he would not. Believe it or not, Larnach has more value as a DH/PH/1X per wk LF/RF to the Twins than to other teams. Larnach will not bring back anything worth discussing.

Both Wallner and Jones had very similar high values and now both have similar lower values. I'm asking whether a Wallner-Jones trade is a good idea now for the future of the team. Wallner is strictly a DH. I don't see the Twins using him solely in that role.

Wallner is capable of mashing but he has been struggling. Does anyone think he could return anything worthwhile .... say a TJ rehabbing Jared Jones?

Status quo guarantees a .500 record as the goal year after. A larger problem (perhaps just me only) is that the current roster plays poor defense, is slow, doesn't hit for extra bases, and is largely boring outside of the pitching. The expiring contracts could bring potential down the road and the loss is negligible. I'm not opposed to trading EmRod. Ryan, Ober, and Lopez are more likely to be traded than Festa due to years of control. I doubt the Twins trade a starter other than Paddack. It is best to make changes in the offseason, but I'm ready for some change now.

Fielding statistics are rough and even then we know the Twins are well below average in the field. Yes, the Twins need more offense but continuing to use players in the outfield who cannot catch the ball with a pitching staff that is fly ball heavy doesn't make any sense. I sure hope one of Larnach/Wallner breaks out with the bat after the break, but I also wish they would only play in the field once a week at most. Falvey may be a super shy introvert, but someone in the front office needs to work the phones in the next few weeks.

All-Star Game will debut the ABS challenge system
tony&rodney replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Other Baseball
Agree that the conversations are on multiple levels with some of the different parties having strong views. My guess is that umpires would like the system to remain as it has always been. If change must come, I would think the umpires would prefer ABS all the time. Those who want the challenge system may be thinking that that introduces an interest level. My personal take is - use ABS always or don't at all. If not using ABS, create financial incentives for greater accuracy. There may be some in place currently. I don't know about that. As far as people not liking change, the vast majority of people have seen and accepted massive change in their lifetimes. Some of the recent changes were largely PR stunts. An example is the pitch clock. Baseball never had a clock but it has always had rules about the batter getting in the box and the pitcher pitching in a timely manner. The rules included the number of seconds but enforcement was left up to the umpire. MLB took away that enforcement at some point even as the rules remained. In high school, college, amateur, and minor league ball umpires still called strikes on batters or balls on pitchers if they didn't comply with an umpire's request. This is why you didn't see 3-4 hour high school (and other levels) games. I saw this on a number of occasions as a player and coach/manager. I wonder if the rules will be slightly altered going forward. Now, the batter gets one timeout and almost every batter uses it. Maybe MLB adds one timeout every three batters for the pitcher. Currently, pitchers need to call the umpire out to look at the pitch device/ "It isn't working" or request time to tie a shoelace. It's all good though and I'm fine with whatever for the most part. Even the ghost runner has merits for players and stadium employees. They get to go home. I'm fine with tie games if the goal is to shorten the time by reducing innings after 9 played. Everyone has thoughts though. -
This is exactly how I feel. The current roster won't do it. Playing it back is insanity. The discussion of trading players contains some callous elements because these players have preferences, families, and go through emotions like any person would .... plus they deal with an incredible amount of public examination and criticism .... the fate of professional athletes. I do feel for these guys. I do regret when I criticize a player at times but the Twins can be painful to watch. Ultimately, we are fans of the Twins and we (at least me) want to watch/listen to a good baseball team. I'm not existing just for a championship team as a fan but I do want to see the Twins playing baseball in a fashion similar to Tampa Bay or a few other teams. The roster needs change. The suggestions by TopGunn#22 are on point. The players on expiring contracts should be moved for something. The players with high values can be traded in the right deal. Good luck to the Twins front office in the next two weeks as they examine, discuss, and negotiate a critical time.

Winokur still has plenty of contact and pitch recognition improvements to make. Still, he is my favorite player to watch. I try to catch as many plate appearances as I can of Winokur. The kid is learning. The k-rate is down 2% and the BB-rate is up 1+%. He steals bases, hits for extra bases, reached base on errors, and is a tremendous defensive player with a rocket arm. I'm willing to be patient (think 2028). Fun player.

They don't need to because their peak potential is Nelson Cruz / DH. The Twins are just mean to their pitchers when Wallner is in right field. His mind would be at ease if he could burn his glove and just hit.

Agree totally but the Twins are not trading Ryan, Duran, or Jax for long term prospects. At least I don't think they will.

Dear Falvey, You Can't Trade Away Joe Ryan
tony&rodney replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Matthews is back after the break. Ryan, Festa, Woods Richardson, Matthews, and Paddack with Ober and Lopez back soon is a pretty solid group. Raya and Morris will be ready to contribute next year as needed. Whatever means or ways that can be found, the Twins need to upgrade their position player spots. Listen to those who call and call those teams who you think may be interested in discussing players with across baseball. I don't think keeping everything the same will work.- 41 replies
