  1. Byron had been in the lineup 41 of 44 games going into last night. I'm sure he wants to have a season where he plays more games than at any time in his career. Hopefully he checks out ok because he must feel a little unlucky right now. Wish him all the best.
  2. This is a good idea. MLB managers get stressed out with 12 pitchers though. Just to add again - Fitzgerald is a good shortstop. I like Brooks Lee plenty but Fitz is actually a better shortstop if the Twins care about that.
  3. Fitzgerald has been playing a very good shortstop for the Saints. His hitting has been solid too. This is an encouraging move.
  4. Someone mentioned betting and steroids in the same sentence. Betting is on an individual and absolutely affects the game. Betting to win doesn't obscure the damage. Rose would use his entire pitching staff if necessary to tilt the games, a practice not even used in Game 7 of a World Series contest. The 3 batter minimum would have messed up the betting. Rose was a terrific baseball player who specifically forfeited his right to ever be considered for baseball honors. Let him and the entire case RIP. Steroids is ultimately on the individual, for sure. However, one cannot totally dismiss the role of MLB and Bud Selig specifically in advertising and promoting the great steroid home run chase between McGuire and Sosa. Nobody who followed baseball was surprised by the ensueing flood of steroid usage. It was a time when steroids were widely advertised and suggested as a means to healing and building strength. It is not a mystery why a leaked positive test for David Ortiz failed to keep him out of the Hall of Fame while the poster player of steroids, who was tested far more than anyone ever, never had a positive test and is still not in the Hall of Fame. Because of the active role MLB and Bud Selig, steroids should not be an issue for admittance for those players who were active during that era. Later times, with widespread specific notice of punishments, should be looked at differently.
  5. Carson is about the same as Wallner. Wallner has a slightly better arm but McCusker gets better jumps on balls in the air. He is better than Larnach.
  6. Small insignificant note - Carson McCusker is 26 years old. He turns 27 next week. Apparently there are people triggered by age. McCusker is not old.
  7. Having watched most of the Saints games via milb.com, it is fair to say that there is a significant difference between Gasper and McCusker. Gasper has been given an opportunity and there just isn't anywhere to use him. McCusker is hitting the ball hard on a consistent basis. The Twins seem unlikely to call up McCusker though. The system looks for obstacles, not on 40 roster, Indy ball signee, age, and amount invested, as opposed to performance. Wallner is out, Larnach is mostly a DH, Bader is hurting, and Buxton is a question mark as a result of yesterday's collision. If not now, when?
  8. Payton Eeles is on a rehab assignment in Ft. Myers (Mussels). There are options to try. Miranda, Julien, and Gasper won't add anything at this point. I'm hoping for a dose of McCusker.
  9. Twins are getting great pitching. Buxton is playing well and the team receives timely contributions from an assortment of guys. If Correa and Buxton need to be sat down for a week on the Concussion Il, both McCusker and Fitzgerald will provide more help than any other players from the Saints.
  10. Rather the umpires call all pitches than the challenge system. If there must be tech involved in calling balls and strikes just make it 100% ABS. We saw in Spring Training and we see in minor league games that umpires can, on the odd occasion, get irritated when a number of their calls are overturned and retribution is a possibility when a team runs out of challenges. This is why I am opposed to the challenge system. The vast majority of the time I don't have an issue with umpires.
  11. Hired in October, 2016 - DF is in year 9 of his Twins post. WS or bust for him this year.
  12. Some of the best defensive outfielders were initially sent to the outfield because they could not field ground balls on the dirt. Perhaps McCusker is not cut out for infield duty. He works just fine with his current bat in right field or at DH. We shall see how this plays out.
  13. Kept circling back to watch the Saints and was never disappointed - what a finish .... again. McCusker is really staying on the ball and also being patient. Long scary plate appearances for the pitcher. Happy for Gasper. He takes a grooved swing and the pitcher laid it right in there and Mickey didn't miss it. Big smile from him. Prielipp looked good. I only managed to catch his last inning. Great write-up. Love looking over these minor league reports.
  14. Yes, there value was high, but that is in the past. I suggested trades of both of these guys and Lewis in two years ago, but who knows if anything could have worked out anyway. Miranda and Julien are still worth a flyer from some team .... a player who is a total long shot, which is better than nothing. No use in lamenting missed opportuities from the past. It is time to move forward.
  15. Great win for Twins. The pitching is really good. We better hope the Orioles bats stay cold another week because they have some players who can swing it. Tough series ahead. Day game after a night game and Gasper in minor leagues, there is no way you pinch hit for Vazquez and put Jeffers behind the plate in an early May game.
  16. Good time to move Lee to 3B and put a player at 2B.
  17. Rocco needs to at least consider having Vazquez bunt when a runner can be moved up. The Twins are too adverse to using all of the options available in the game.
  18. Lewis is rusty. He actually looks better in the box with the Twins than he did with the Saints, where the minor league pitchers just toyed with him. Baseball is tough and timing is critical for the batter.
  19. Plenty of people picked the Orioles to win the AL East. They need pitchers but you can see that they have some pretty athletic guys and will score a ton of runs once they warm up the bats.
  20. Lee is a decent third baseman, but he does not project well at second base. We can see it today: no vertical, lack of foot speed, and relative inexperience on the right side puts Lee in a bad spot to shine. Unfortunately, Ober pays the price.
  21. The Twins should be aggressively seeking to trade both players before a DFA is the end result. There are players in the DSL and GCL (rookie rosters) who may pay off as a lottery chance. The Twins are unlikely to use either Julien or Miranda on any consistent basis going forward unless there are 4+ infield injuries. Players like Tyler Fitzgerald, Jeferson Morales, Armando Alvarez, Will Holland and Anthony Prato are all options to use if any of France, Lee, Castro, Lewis, Bride, Clemens, and Gasper are injured or fail. Both Julien and Miranda need a fresh start with a different organization and trading them does not hinder the Twins at all. Set them free.
  22. Am I the only person amused by the comments that 27 is old? Even in baseball, McCusker is not an old man. By the way, he is 26 for a couple more weeks and younger than any Twins outfielder. Age is a funny thing for some people. Is Aaron Judge too old? Also I want to encourage people who have an mlb.com subscription to tune into a few minor league games via milb.com. The stat lines can often be deceiving. Last night Andrew Morris had a couple of balls squared up against him but he mostly controls the hitters; he is tough to barrel up. Soft hits are still hits but mostly outs in MLB, so looking at stats could go a different way on a different level. The Saints top 3 guys are working on different pitches in preparation for the next level as opposed to simply getting outs.
  23. This is true. My eye test gives McCusker slightly better jumps than Wallner, but Wallner is a little faster. So same, same more or less in the field.
  24. Bean 5302, I hope you are watching him play. Nothing is guaranteed for minor league players if they reach The Show, but McCusker, while still in need of improvements, has made great strides in the last two years that I have watched him in games. Carson hits the ball very hard pretty often.
  25. My recommendation is that people watch McCusker play. At least try to watch him in 5-10 games. Carson is not similar at all to those names that have appeared in the comments. He is not a RH hitting Matt Wallner either. He has his weaknesses but has shown steady improvement in the last two years. He has crushed pitchers that other players had trouble with at the plate. If you have not seen him play looking at his stats will not give you a picture. One thing I will say, if the goal is to hit the ball hard no player in the organization is in his class. The stats are only an introduction.
