Sadly, I have thought that as well. However, when you consider that the Marlins are stiffs at the plate and can trot out Alcantara, Luzardo, Lopez, and Rogers ahead of Cabrera and that they also have Braxton, Fulton, and Perez as ready prospects plus have signed Cueto to pitch, it may indeed be possible. Arraez, Larnach, and Martin or Gordon or Kepler would sure help Miami.
-
You might be light on your evaluation of Lopez but pitchers are notoriously difficult from year to year and always carry the risk of arm injuries. Kepler and Larnach might be acceptable. Maybe Miami would take Pagan in a trade too but that is just me wanting to avoid any more debacles with Emilio. I'm keen to add Cabrera or Luzardo because of their potential to front a rotation. This is what the Twins need, now and going forward. I do give up Arraez and Larnach for either guy. Perhaps add Miller. I would rather the Twins stand pat than see them trade any of E-Rod, Lee, or Lewis. These guys have more potential for the Twins than they currently have in trade value.

How Does the Twins Outfield Get Sorted?
tony&rodney replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Buxton started 51 games last year, so Celestino stays, although it would be best for him to play every day for the St. Paul Saints until he is needs to be called up. Gallo and Buxton are certainties and Kirilloff has almost no value until he can show his game. I also believe he stays at first base until or unless needed elsewhere, which hopefully doesn't happen. Gordon has so much utility and improved quite a bit last year so I think he stays unless another teams puts an inordinate high value on him. That leaves Kepler and Larnach. The Twins can just roll with what they have in fear of the bad luck of last year or these two get traded. Wallner will start in St. Paul unless he too is overvalued by another team. I believe in Wallner and see a physical guy who is just growing into his body with enormous potential to hit for average and power while drawing walks. The K's are a concern, but I think he can only get better in the field.- 48 replies

I would totally agree that Max Kepler still has plenty of value to other teams and to the Twins as well. I don't believe that Kepler alone will bring back any of Lopez, Cabrera, or Luzardo. I do think that Arraez might, but it is likely that a sweetener needs to added from a non 40 person roster player like Austin Martin or Noah Miller. Hopefully the two teams keep a dialogue going and complete a trade because Miami needs a bat or two and the Twins could use a pitcher with upside.

3 Twins Prospects that Need Healthy 2023 Seasons
tony&rodney replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Emmanuel has a chance to be special, as in superstar player. I agree that this year is big for him because he totally dominated FSL. I hope he gets a half year at Wichita which is very aggressive. Balazovic looked lost on the mound and one can only hope that a complete recovery from any ailments and a fresh year can reset his approach to pitching because his stuff is still decent. Lewis will fit in as soon as the rust is off. His talent, confidence, and experiences last year should make him a big contributor to the Twins this coming season. Hopefully he can avoid further injuries and build his career. I guess Alex Kirilloff is not a prospect any longer but he sure needs to prove he can rip like we saw in St. Paul last summer for a brief spell.- 10 replies

Tony Gwynn 2.0?
tony&rodney commented on jlarson's blog entry in batting 9th and playing right field
Rich Rollins was a very good base runner and had as good of a glove as any third sacker not named Robinson. Rollins also was an accomplished hitter with decent pop in his bat. Unfortunately, Rollins had injuries and his outstanding years from 1962-1965 were not to be repeated. Rich was excellent for four years in a time when my love for the game of baseball was in its early years. -
Twins Announce Spring Training Non-Roster Invitees
tony&rodney replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ahh. I typed before I thought .... not the first time. Thank you. I had forgotten. I watched his at bats a number of times last year and it sure seemed like he progressed immensely all year long. He does strike out at times and has long at bats but my thinking is that he controlled the at bat as well as anyone. Julien also barrels the ball often. It should be interesting to see how he does with the robo umpire and better pitching in AAA.- 17 replies

Twins Announce Spring Training Non-Roster Invitees

I was hoping that Julien would get an invite after his outstanding year and showing in the Arizona Fall League; a reward of sorts.- 17 replies

In 2019, two of the young arms I was excited about were Chris Paddack and Sandy Alcantara. Each was proving difficult for opposing batters. Alcantara has blossomed while Paddack had his second major surgery. The road back is really rough for pitchers who need multiple arm resets. Paddack has come into fantastic financial luck with this contract. Pitchers love to pitch though and i hope he can joyfully reach every incentive on a healthy return to the mound.

The Twins would be foolish to even consider trading Emmanuel Rodriguez. He is likely carrying as much or more value than Brooks Lee. Edward Cabrera is the guy to get though and the Marlins are listening. Arraez, Larnach, Ober, and Kepler for Cabrera and Luzardo is the gamble to take.

Jovani Moran Deserves Respect
tony&rodney replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would put him in the top six, so a keeper. -
Sandy Alcantara and Eury Perez are strictly NOT available, off the table - no discussion. Pablo Lopez is a pretty good outcome whenever he pitches, but the Twins need more years of control. Both of Edward Cabrera and Jesus Luzardo have great upside. The Twins should really look at trying to acquire one of these two pitchers. Each is capable of shutting down any team in baseball as soon as this October.

The Twins do not need to make trades. I agree with those that say that statement. Miami though has a big need for bats because they simply have not been able to score any runs. They also have a handful of arms that are ready and project as top of a rotation starting pitcher. All of Lopez, Luzardo, and Cabrera are pitchers that batters cannot hit, and they also have guys like Fulton, Meyer, and Eder who have good upside. The Marlins have stated that Alcantara and Perez are off limits. Thus the Marlins are busy answering their phones right now. The Twins may want to wait, which seems prudent. However, waiting will also mean that access to these highly rated pitchers will likely be history. Thus the difficult decision is how much future value is there for the Twins in paying a steep price for Lopez, Cabrera, or Luzardo now. From Miami's side, who can hit now and still be valuable for several years. My best guess is that one or two or some combination of Arraez, Kepler, Miranda, Lewis, Martin, Larnach, and Jeffers hold appeal for the Marlins. One thought is that Miami may be open to a reduced return if a team takes Jorge Soler in a deal. Maybe Larnach and Jeffers returns Cabrera with Soler attached. A trade with Miami is truly tricky and involves risk, but not as much risk as signing Correa. So it may be posssible depending on how Falvey sees our current roster. The Twins do not have to trade but the time is right and while nobody knows right now, Cabrera and Luzardo could be absolute anchors for a Twins staff.

Have the Twins Spoiled Their Next Move?
tony&rodney commented on Hunter McCall's blog entry in Hunter McCall
Perhaps the Twins should look at Jorge Soler as a RH bat in a blockbuster trade with Miami where the primary goal is to acquire Cabrera and/ or Luzardo. -
Carlos Correa Saved the Twins Offseason

Plenty of time left in 2023 to see what was the most important deal of the year but the Correa signing certainly shifted the dynamics around the direction of the team.- 37 replies

Take a look at what Matt Wallner accomplished last season. In his 3rd season of professional baseball and 1st full time gig, he put up a decent average with a laudable OBP, SLG, and OPS slash line. He may just be coming into his own and while he is rough right now in the field he has a cannon for an arm and is actually very fast. It is true that Wallner needs a ton of repetitions to improve as an outfielder and he also needs to cut down on his strikeouts. He is learning quickly though and has a terrific ceiling. Wallner has improved at every level and shown an ability to adjust within an at bat. I have a feeling he can be a star if given the opportunity.

I'm a Twins fan and I like baseball, especially when it is played correctly. Playing the game right takes, talent, discipline, fundamentals, and focus. Correa has it all. Now we wish him good health and success leading the Twins forward. The litany of hard luck and injuries that cascaded across the 2022 season should not be an issue in 2023. Welcome back Carlos and good luck.
-
Correa is a gamer. He plays hard and works hard to keep in prime physical and mental shape. So many things can happen but the Twins are lucky to have a shortstop who makes every play seem routine and takes professional at bats.

The Twins, like many teams, have some real talented young baseball players. These players will need to force their way on to the roster through their performances. A few people have mentioned Alex Kirilloff but it seems like most have forgotten him or believe his road back is strewn with daunting physical challenges. I have neither heard nor read any reports on Kirilloff this offseason. If Alex returns as the guy who plays a smooth first base and rockets baseballs across the playing field like he did for a stretch last summer in St. Paul, he will be hitting in the heart of the Twins lineup. I see Kirilloff as a key to a strong Twins team. Edouard Julien will need to prove himself in St. Paul before he receives an opportunity in Minneapolis. A strong month in Florida followed by line drives sprayed around AAA fields may push the Twins to give the young batting machine a look. He profiles as a DH until further work in the infield but if he carries his numbers forward Julien could deserve a shot. Spring Training should be really interesting because I believe that all of Lee, Kirilloff, and Julien possess the skills a championship team needs at the plate.

All Julien has done in the last two years is hit for average, get on base at a high rate, steal bases, and hit for extra bases. One wonders what would happen if Julien rips the cover off the ball in Spring Training. DH?

Enjoyed the video. I believe the two teams match up reasonably well. The Marlins should be looking a sure bat and an emerging hitter. I'm keen to add Cabrera to the Twins team but also nearly as hopeful for Luzardo. Both carry huge upside and also risk, as do all young pitchers. A trade for Luzardo and Cabrera? How about Arraez, Larnach, and Kepler? The extra player does create a small issue for the Marlins. Can the Twins take back Soler? There should be a match and it seems like a good gamble for both teams to make.
