  1. Like I said, we all love Royce Lewis. Bobby Witt Jr. is on a whole different level than Royce though. You could probably get 100-1 odds or better that Lewis never puts up a season of numbers that equals those that Witt Jr. has already put up in the last three seasons and Bobby is improving. Witt Jr. is a superstar, different but mentioned right up there with Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani (unicorn). Again, let's hope Royce leads us into the World Series but we shouldn't put unrealistic expectations on him.
  2. The plethora of statistics make for interesting ways in which to judge players today. Anyone can create whatever system they find personally interesting and have fun with it. Wins are not seen as a very complete statistic today and ERA is also somewhat diminished. While many will find these exercises fun, it is doubtful that they are any better than the simple knowledge of who is pitching well and can be counted on. There were countless disparaging articles about Jack Morris and his accomplishments related to his HOF selection. Yet it is a sure thing that Sparky and every other manager in baseball considered Morris an ace. Tom Kelly would have a word or two to say as well. Unless an injury or something unforeseen is involved, we should expect Pablo Lopez to start Game 1 of a playoff series. He is our ace.
  3. Puk was my top choice of a guy that it seemed like the Twins should go after in July. It didn't happen and I was a little disappointed but also think it is like spilt milk - one just moves on. Thielbar and others will need to step forward. It's what we got.
  4. We all love Royce Lewis and we hope he leads us to the World Series, but he has not even played 162 games in his career. There isn't any comparison between the two players, Witt Jr. is better at everything: hitting, power, fielding throwing, and running. Lewis is also a year older. This from a diehard Twins fan.
  5. It would take several injuries before Matthews was an option. He is not ready.
  6. The pitching has been consistently solid, both starters and relievers. I'm more concerned about the offense. The bats need to step forward on a consistent basis and I believe they will.
  7. I started having a healthy dose of respect for the Royals when they swept the Astros last season. Kansas City has improved since that time, quite a bit. While I like the Twins chances if everyone performs, Witt Jr. is a superstar who far outshines anything that Minnesota can bring to the plate. I'm hoping that the Twins win the ALCentral and that both Cleveland and Kansas City are Wild Card teams.
  8. I know when I effed up I was harder on myself than any 100 people could ever be. Sometimes the brain fails. Does Larnach have a history of malaise, lazy output, or carelessness? His blunder was not a good look. We can recognize it and still move on without extracting any blood. OK? One of the strengths of a good baseball player is an ability to move on from the triumphs and embarrassments of yesterday to focus on the task at hand. Let's hope Larnach comes to play tomorrow, focused on the game and not yesterday.
  9. It was a bad play. Please remember that as much as we want to believe that these things should never happen, people make mistakes. I'm sure Trevor was mortified by his blunder. I played against Bombo Rivera in senior men's ball. He was just another regular guy and was trying to have fun like all of the rest of us.
  10. Baseball is always about the 162 game schedule. Yes, there are important games, but they all count the same. Nobody looks at the teams you beat or lost to when the season is over. The record speaks for itself. If the Twins finish with the best record in the ALC, we don't care about those individual games. However, yes, we all want the Twins to win their upcoming series versus the Cleveland and Kansas City teams.
  11. I believe Larnach was humbled by his moment and it was quietly addressed. FWIW, Danny Ford was an exciting player who managed to set the bar so high for poor base running and likewise shenanigans that Larnach could never possibly reach that standard. I'm sure some other long time Twins fans can remember a gem or two from the Disco Dan Files. I loved that guy, but OMG, the surprises and blunders....
  12. The Twins need to grind it out every game now. Lopez is up next and then Ryan on Wednesday afternoon. It looks like it could be Ober, Varland, Woods Richardson, and Festa versus Cleveland. Who could have forecast that? All about execution and believing in the power of positive thought. I think the talent is there.
  13. No worries, the roster is good. Worrying is just wishing for bad luck. The team looks solid and Correa coming back can only make the Twins stronger. We can put off any concerns about next year until November.
  14. The meth of small towns and rural areas is much scarier, having lived in both.
  15. Looks like the pitching made good tonight. How about that rookie Festa? Is it getting time to be excited about this team team?
  16. The reality is that Max Kepler leaving after 2024 has nothing to do with out wishes or thoughts. His contract ends and he will be a free agent, making him free to go wherever he chooses. My guess is West Coast for 3/$36M. My hope is that he tears apart MLB pitching for the next two plus months and gets 3/$60M from whatever team he wants to play for in the next few years. Good luck, Max.
  17. Varland pitched on Saturday. It is possible he is slated for a Twins starting role on Friday on regular rest. I agree that Varland would look good in the bullpen, but I think it will be September before this move takes place. Neither Matthews nor Dobnak are answers for an MLB start at this time. We hope David Festa can throw 4-6 innings in his starts with less than 4 runs allowed. That makes Varland a safety valve until late in the season or unless both Woods Richardson and Festa are reliable. I am pretty bullish on both SWR and DF but there are bound to be nerves concerning the young guns.
  18. Max will get a good contract. He won't be back with the Twins. I would like to see him back, but he will move on.
  19. Tuned in to watch Connor Prielipp last night after watching his dominant two innings last week. In the first two innings Prielipp totally overmatched the batters. He looked, similar to last week, like he was misplaced in Hi-A ball as Connor dominated in those two innings. Then, he looked completely different right away in inning three. The fastball did not have the same movement (flat) and his breaking pitches just seemed to spin without the crispness. It was surprising to see the difference and unsurprising that those pitches found the bats. Prielipp is a big strong guy but he looked like he was gassed. Patience will be needed with him, apparently.
  20. Curious if Staumont chose free agency or what? No options left? I would think Staumont could still rebound/find some success. No word or comments from anyone so it is hard to know.
  21. Just a guess, but one of the areas where Matthews needed some work was on occasionally pitching inside. While Matthews throws hard and has good control, batters have been leaning out over the plate. AAA hitters are better than AA bats and those sliders on the corner were getting hit more often. Unfortunately, last night Mathews beaned Gilberto Celestino in the first inning. Celestino had to be brought off the field on a cart and Matthews was visible upset as were others. Remember that Celestino had been a part of the organization and many of these guys know him. In any event, Matthews just more or less grooved his pitches for a few batters. It almost seemed inevitable that he would give up a hard hit in that inning. Matthews did recover to pitch another four innings though and finished with 8 strikeouts. He will be fine. FWIW, Matthews is progressing really well as a pitcher, but I doubt the Twins have any ideas of promoting him this year before all of Varland, Boushley, and Plutko with Festa and Dobnak already on the MLB roster. Next year Matthews could get a run.
  22. This is the key to making the playoffs. The Twins cannot afford to worry about winning this or that specific series. If they play well and hold their place they are in the playoffs. While an ALC division title is important, gaining the playoffs is the goal. Once part of the party, it's time to party.
