I agree. I think Arraez scored before Adrianza was tagged but one could easily imagine him slowing down a bit knowing he was scoring and then not have that huge run count. Wasn't the only base running mistake. Not enough gain taking 3rd when a run likely scores him from 2nd anyway but compounded by Kepler not taking 2nd on the play. Given Adrianza's bad play, I don''t know how Kepler doesn't take the extra base.

Brusdar Graterol's Velocity in Context
Dantes929 commented on sethmoko's blog entry in Sethmoko's Blog
Seeing him pitch I think Joel Zumaya, which is pretty good, but I hope for a longer and better career. -
Tigers have a .667 winning record against the Yankees. Only conclusion I can draw is the Yankees have that lead only because they are lucky they don''t have to play the Tigers that often.

I am fine with Duffey being a reliever and think his stuff plays pretty well there. I disagree with the idea of his stuff not playing well as a starter. He was really good in 2015. Good command of the fastball and a really good, sharp breaking curve ball that was thrown at different speeds and angles. If he had continued to throw that well I believe he would have continued to succeed. If you can judge fairly accurately what you see on tv, in 2016 he did not have the same command as his fastball and his curveball was not as sharp. Kind of like Scot Diamond. Its not like the opposition figured him out. His stuff and command just wasn't as good. HIs mph has certainly improved lately which certainly helped. Pitchers aren't just static performers. Confidence, maturity, and experience matters. Those things come and go. Right now they are here for Duffey.

I think you are wrong here. I am pretty sure the Yankee, Cubs, Nats, Mets and Dodger fans are looking at their 2 dozen blown saves each and saying "No problem, the teams we have blown saves against during the regular season are better than the teams we will face in the playoffs." I'm not sure how but somehow it is only the Twins that have relief issues against the good teams. I am just as sure that those other teams fans say stuff like " Well, yes, the other team just scored the go ahead runs on us in the 7th inning but I think leaving the starter in was the right move" or "Well, yes, the other team just scored the go ahead runs on our relievers in the 6th inning after our starter threw 5 shutout innings but I still think it was the right move to take him out"
-
It is a fine line and old as the ages. The commentary here is much different and questioning if Duffey gives up runs also. No manager can overcome hindsight when things don't work out. It is quite possible that leaving Pineda in would be fine and replacing him would be fine. It is also possible that leaving Pineda in or replacing him would result in runs. Personally, I don't love relying on 5 pitchers (including the starter) being on. I would like some one like May (or Graterol) come in and if they look good keep them in for two innings. Also like it when Rogers comes in for two innings. Then you would have all the others ready if one of those two falter and if they don't falter then you have Duffey, Romo, Dyson and and Graterol the next night.

Front Page: Stop Throwing the Twins Fastballs

Could be the bat that is getting dented in. Either way, it certainly looks squared up by Arraez. What a great picture. -
Front Page: The Hazy Future of Fernando Romero
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"his stall-out doesn't spell doom for Romero. Twins fans know better by now than to form definitive conclusions about a talented young player who hasn't yet turned 25." Have they? Have they? -
I hadn't thought about Kepler at 1st. I really like it when facing right handers, then give one of the three lefties a break when facing a lefty. Cave .825 OPS against righties. Cron .810 against lefties. I like platooning when it makes sense. 3 day rehab seems really short after a month off but Buxton is my favorite player so I will be happy to see him back. Thanks for the correction though. I read the wrong feed.

Tuesday for rehab Tuesday, not to the Twins so if we assume a 10 game rehab I think 21-2 from that point is what you would be looking at which I think would be enough and more realistic.

Odorizzi has a 2.82 ERA in August. Sometimes you have to look beyond the numbers. Odo's last start he gave up 4 runs (3 earned) and those runs resulted from bleeders and happenstance. Berrios just gave up runs and those were a result of really hard hit balls and luckily avoiding other big innings. Right now my confidence level is Odorizzi, Pineda, Gibson, Perez and Berrios. That ranking won't be changed by me in the next 5 days but probably will in the next 10. At different times I have read here that Pineda, Sano, Cave, May and Duffey were AAAA or should be DFA'd and that Berrios was our only reliable starter. Stay tuned. Next 10 days will have a different story. One of the story lines is Buxton. How do you sit Cave when he has been this hot? How do you sit Rosario or Kepler? . Do you lengthen Buxton's rehab assignment if they all continue to play well?

Not hindsight. If the hits that inning were squeakers, thats one thing but everything hit that inning was rockets. Even the line out. Now the main culprit was the hanging curve ball but his location of the curveball all night was way off and he was helped occassionally with Tigers swinging at horrible pitches. He really didn't have it. I made a mental note to comment that Rocco should have pulled Berrios earlier even if he got out of that inning. Of course no one enjoys losing but I do enjoy the drama. I will say sometimes journeymen can pitch like aces and vice versa. Berriios uncontrolled curveball was more 2 oclock to 8 oclock. Verhagens's curveballs were sharp 12 to 6. I didn't see the whole game but when he struck out the side they weren't such bad at bats but truly nasty pitches against very good hitters..

Front Page: 7 Weird Stats About Jose Berrios’ Season
Dantes929 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Could be he needs a rest with some time off. Could also very well be mechanics. Nothing great to compare to but watching last night it looked like he was stepping toward third more and throwing across his body. Any golfers out there who hit effortless 250 yard drives for a time only to find themselves putting a lot of effort into hitting 230 yard drives for long stretch find this so hard to believe? Then you get a lesson and find out that just changing one thing like grip or posture fixes everything. -
All I wished for this team in April was meaningful games in September. Remember a week ago when we won 4 straight in Texas? Another week from now will be another story. People seem to think our past WS or playoff seasons were just a smooth steady rise to first place. It was never that way. 87 team was up 5 games on August 17th and tied on August 28th. Not saying in any way or form that this team will follow 87's path but it would be cool if TD existed back then and be able to see the fan's comments on August 28th of that year. Of course its more fun when your team is coming back from way down rather than seeing a lead shrinking. This is fun too though.

I wouldn't go this far unless you think Buxton's defense is worth the at least extra run the staff has given up in the last long stretch. I also agree with Ashbury that any extra pitcher or two would be coming in for Perez ,who won his last start, not for Berrios who has not been good at all in August. Odorizzi and Pineda have been just fine. I agree Berrios needs a little time off and a reset or needs to figure out along with the pitching coach what adjustment is needed. I defended Berrios when the Twins lost 8 of his 11 starts in one stretch because it was easy to defend a stretch where he had an ERA well below 3. His August has an ERA well above 8. I could make a case that just replacing Smeltzer for Berrios at the trade deadline would have given us two more wins. 4 games isn't an anomoly.

I was mostly trying to be funny. I disagree that pay should be included in any calculation. I don;t care how much they make. If price per WAR were a factor you might as well just eliminate any veteran over 6 years from consideration. Closest I can come with your ice cream example is would you rather have Kemps, Edie's, Haagen Daaz, etc. Period. Most valuable asset would be a different discussion and would maybe bring Aj for Nathan, Liriano and Boof or Viola for Aguillera, Tapani into play. A different award could be most best return of WAR for the money. MVP should just be whose production for the current year would you most like to have on your team. If its close then players on competitive teams should be considered. If a guy has 20 homers and 6 of them are walk off that should be considered. If another guy has 20 homers and they all came with plus or minus 5 runs that could be considered also. In other words mostly stat driven but situational consideration. Situational meaning on the field situations not compensation or draft considerations. Thats just IMO.

Ok, I concede. Lets call it the NIAMSOWRTTPCOEHHODOBRHVHIITCSOTAPFWTMRTTTSH Not In A Macro Economic Sense Or With Regard To The Player's Contract Or Effect He Has on Draft Order But Rather How Valuable He Is In The Current Season On The Actual Playing Field Without Too Much Regard To The Talent Surrounding Him award Or MVP for short.

Sorry. Not buying it. No team is going to say we can beat the Angels no matter what Trout does. They are going to say our odds of beating the Angels go up significantly if we pitch around Trout and make the others beat us.. At least the smart ones do. Twins should have pitched around Abreu this series. If they had they might have won 2 of 3 instead of losing. On the other hand, teams would have a tougher time pitching around Trout if he was surrounded by guys that can hit. He leads the major leagues in walks. That doesn't tell me they are going after him. The only reason to pitch to him ever is that when they don't walk him he makes outs 70% of the time.

Exactly. Forget salary, age and future seasons. Would you trade what Trout has produced for what Cruz has produced? Would you trade Cruz for Trout for just the rest of the season? I would in a heartbeat. Would you do that if you thought your Player was Most Valuable? While we are on the subject lets not just make it a foregone conclusion that Cruz is even the most valuable on the Twins. Statistically Polanco is a 4.9 WAR per BR. Cruz and Kepler are both at 3.7. Those are my top 3 and I am leaning toward Kepler.

I think its just one of those games where the blame can be spread out pretty evenly. Offense, starter, relief, defense, base running. I had a bad feeling the game might have turned in the first inning when Rosario hit the rocket that the 2nd baseman made a great play on. Some days it might have still been enough to beat some teams but playing well enough to beat most teams is the standard they need to play up to. I'm just not so sure about the clutch hitting part. I get what you are saying but are you expecting them to have more than 15 hits and more than 4 extra base hits or do you think it is in their control when they get those hits.?
