Also I wonder if there is some pressure from the Union not to accept a QO as no one has done it yet.

Cuddyer is easily worth the 2/21 million but not with the 15th pick in the draft as well. Unless the Mets feel they are that close to contending again. They do have extra pitchers so they may feel they are just a couple of hitters away. I know they need a SS and the Mets are talking to the Rockies about Tulowitzcky. if they don't get him they can get Escobar and their offense will be upgraded significantly as Cuddyer helps and their SS were terrible last year. I think there will be a lot of activity after watching the Royals go to the World series last season and a lot of teams probably feel they are just a few players away. Back on the Cuddyer front since that is the main story he is originally from West Virginia and he is friends with Wright and Cuddyer I don't think needs that huge payday anymore so why not have a better lifestyle then make an extra 3-5 million over 2 years.

I like the other option better....TRADE for a starting pitcher. There are a lot of them available this winter cause a lot of them will be free agents next year. Next year will be the better year to sign a free agent pitcher if we need one. Also this year's Phil Hughes is Nolasco....sort of, I expect he'll rebound back to career norms.

A Possible Budget Dilemma the Twins May Face
Brandon replied to DocBauer's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Why pay 150 million for an ace when you can trade for any number of pitchers who have one year left on their contract. Buerhle, Kazmir, Parker (A's), Gee, Neise, Leake, Cuerto, Simon..... The A's, Mets, and Cincinnati can use a SS. We have Escobar. We also have prospects and more we can include. I have no idea why the posters on this site are even looking at Free Agent pitchers when there is no reason to do that. All of the above pitchers are going to be Free agents next year and there will be more too. Get a good pitcher for next year then be ready to go shopping next year. Our rotation needs a pitcher who can pitch 190-210 innings and contribute 12-16 wins. doesn't matter if they are an ace or not. Our bullpen can compensate for that. -
Hartman: Twins owner won't restrict spending in free agency
Brandon replied to jay's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
How much money do you think the Twins should spend? What improvements do the Twins need to make? On offense we are set pretty good. we can use one more bat that can play decent enough defense in LF. We have 3 set starting pitchers for next season with 3 starters (Millone, May, and Meyer competing for 2 spots) You can include Pelfry and Pino if you want. But I think we should sign at least 1 starting pitcher. Bullpen is pretty solid but we can replace a few if we need to. end result we can use 1 OF, 1 Starting pitcher, and maybe 1 reliever. We also have hitting on the way though they have both been delayed a year. I say sign Hunter to 1 year 10-12 million and Trade for a starter (there's about 10 available cause they'll be Free agents after next season) that's another 5-10 million depending on who we get. And maybe a reliever. I'd like to see Neshek back so we'll go with a 2 year 8 million total contract. that's 19-25 million for next season and we can trade Deunsing and release swarzak to free up 5,000,000 of that. Granted there are other ways we can do the offseason but if you are looking for the Twins to sign a pitcher think again. they are more likely to trade for one since they have the assets to do that. -
Hartman: Twins owner won't restrict spending in free agency
Brandon replied to jay's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
There are cost effective ways to get good players and still win. We can trade for a solid starting pitcher just as easily as sign one. We have parts and there are lots of available pitchers cause next years free agent class will be huge. I think if we sign Hunter and trade for a solid starting pitcher we will be in shape to compete for the division title next year. I believe we are that close. -
I am not saying that Torii is the best option in terms of best player available. He's a good one that won't cost a long term commitment As we do have players coming up who can take over LF. I am putting lower cost options out there to fill the holes. your 2 moves cost 30 million to the payroll. Mine are closer to 20 million without a commitment past next year. The twins management will want to see if we can win and how that affects attendance before they spend again.

Tom Brunansky Retained as Twins Hitting Coach
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I don't see why Steinbach wouldn't be brought back. I don't think he was the problem either. He was 6-1 when Gardy was ejected or missed games last year wasn't he. I don't know enough about Vavra either. Vavra was an ok hitting coach before Brunansky came on board. I don't get to watch the games so I don't know how he is as a 3rd base or 1rst base coach. Though I don't hear the complaining I did when Ulger messed up a play consistently. Cueller is a good guy to bring back definitely I would bring him back. He teaches the circle change. So in short if it was me making the decision: Cueller = bring back Steinbach = probably bring back Vavra = maybe I'd probably let the others go. Ulger and Anderson -
Several of the Teams who have starting pitchers available to trade need SS. Even with a 102 adjusted OPS Escobar was one of the better hitting SS last year in the AL. The Mets are willing to trade Niese or Gee. I think a package built around Escobar for one of them can be accomplished. With that said I am not a big fan of trading him. I think he should be the starting SS going into next season and Santana should stay in CF. While Escobar is probably a more average SS he definitely has earned the right to start and if we aren't going to start him we should deal him plain and simple. We have Nunez to be the back up with several others waiting at AAA and Polanco just a call away.

Instead of signing Santana who will get more than 3/45 on the open market we can trade for a starter. We can do a combination of Escobar, Pinto and Relievers and prospects and there are numerous pitchers who may be available due to teams over supply (Mets) or because they are a year from FA (Toronto and Cincinnati) that pitcher would cost less in terms of dollars. Niese would be around 8 million for example. For the OF I am ok with Hunter signing cause its just for 1 season. We have Rosario almost ready, Schaefer, Parmelee, Hicks and possibly Colabello gets another chance since we now know he was hurt last season. who can all compete for LF as is. I still think Santana gets a lot of time in CF next year and I am fine with that as it gives Escobar more time to prove he is a starting SS provided he isn't traded during the offseason. In the bullpen we don't really need to sign anyone, however the fan in me wants to see Neshek back with the Twins. The only other thing I can think of is making sure we have a solid back up C. I don't think the Twins want Pinto to be that guy and the guy they had there last year isn't all that good so I would think getting a decent back up is in order. Where are you Drew Butera? I don't see this as a transaction filled offseason as we now have a pretty stable team and even our bench is solid as well as the pen. Just a tweak in the rotation for depth and some competition in the OF.
-
I am more concerned with getting a 4th starting pitcher capable of winning 12 - 15 games with the ability to pitch 190 - 210 innings. That and the return of Nolasco should give us a rotation that can conceivably win 50-60 games 1-4 in the rotation and we would be relying on the 50th starter and bullpen to win 30 - 35 games to get us into the playoffs or at least be a contender.

Signing Torii Hunter Doesn't Make Sense
Brandon commented on Cody Christie's blog entry in North Dakota Twins Fan
This has no impact on how Torii will do next season. The Twins brought back Blylevin in 1985 and won the world series 2 years later. The Twins appear to be a hitter away from having a monster offense, A starting pitcher and some health for Nolasco away from a solid rotation, and a reliever away from an above average pen. That is a winning and contending team if we get the parts we need. We are a lot closer to contending then it appears. -
I would be real surprised if Cuddyer didn't accept that. How much more can he make on a new contract 2 year 22 to 25 million would be my guess maybe a third year or a 3rd year option with a buyout. Same with Liriano but he is more likely to get hurt so if he thinks he can get a 2 or 3 year deal it may be worth more for a lower AAV say 3/39.

Here is a list of some of the pitchers available for trade this offseason. The Twins really could use a starting pitcher to add to the rotation/ depth move. Cincinnatti has 3 or 4 due to 4 pitchers being Free Agents after next season. Matt Latos, Mike Leake, Cuerto, and Simon. The Mets are considering trading Gee and Niese Toronto / Beurhle Free agents that are realistic for us include: Hammels, Brett Anderson, Edison Volquez, and Liriano, Masterson, McCarthy and Vogelsong and Colby Lewis, Chris Young, Aaron Harang, and Chris Campuano. After reviewing the list I can see the Twins signing one of Vogelsong, Lewis, Campuano or Chis Young or Brett Anderson. On the trade front I can see the Twins trading for any of these pitchers. I would prefer a trade as those pitchers have more talent. The benefit of the signing the pitchers I just listed is they are not blocking anyone so we can let them go if May and Meyer and Berrios wants a call up. Of note mlbtraderumors predicts the Twins will sign Hammels to a 3 year 30 million contract. and Brett Anderson too.

Twins to Name Paul Molitor Manager
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am kinda disappointed. but I think it is more important to have a good pitching coach at this point. Brunansky better be back as well or this is a terrible hire IMO. -
I expect the Twins to be more involved in a trade for a pitcher and maybe sign Neshek who has ties here than to really go big in FA. There is not much for the Twins to really go after outside of another starting pitcher and maybe a reliever or OF this offseason. The roster is a lot more settled than the last few years.

Wasn't Hughes a reclamation project the Twins corrected too. Change of scenery happens all of the time. Worley from afar seemed to make constant excuses and was very defensive here and I thought a change of scenery was the right thing for him. I thought Terry Ryan was doing him a favor sending him to Pittsburgh. I am more offended that he would blast the Twins after they did what they could to help.

Bold Predictions for the Twins Offseason
Brandon commented on jtkoupal's blog entry in Blog jtkoupal
Pinto is a good trade piece. I think there is a good chance he is traded. its not 100%. but he would be worth more to other teams than us by the way we played him last year in a rebuilding year. -
Bold Predictions for the Twins Offseason
Brandon commented on jtkoupal's blog entry in Blog jtkoupal
I disagree with #2. I think the twins will trade for a starting pitcher. there's too many teams willing to trade a starting pitcher for this not to happen. Also I will say this for our FA efforts. we will resign Neshek as a FA. and have a Minnesota connected bullpen of Perkins Neshek and Theilbar -
its not a 16 million commitment its a 13 million after you subtract the 3 million that Deunsing is likely to earn in arbitration. I believe the Twins are closer than you think to contending. 1. Get a starting pitcher to join the rotation so we have 4 starters we know can go 180-210 innings. May and Meyer and Millone if he is not traded can duke it out for the 5th spot. 1.A Nolascoo comes back and pitches to a 4.00 era and 190-210 innings like he has in the past. 2. We could use a LF. we can also use the ones we have in house but then we might be relying on Hicks and I don't know if I want to do that without looking for other options. 3. promote a couple power arms for the pen. not a complete overhaul but one or 2 arms to start. Those moves alone should make us a solid above .500 team. There is no handcuffing of our budget. And the cool thing about Buerhle, is if we want to keep him the following season we can make a QO and he will likely accept at his age or we get a draft pick. Or some of our other prospects will be ready and need a place to pitch and we can let him go as a FA or trade him in season. Note I do believe there are lots of other pitching candidates out there if we want to add someone to the rotation, there are probably close to 10 solid starters available in a trade. and we have plenty of trade chips: Pinto, Millone, Deunsing, Swarzak, Fien, Escobar, possibly Plouffe and prospects. and any combination there of.
-
I Figured if we traded Deunsing and also got back 3,000,000 then we would essentially be getting Beurhle n a 1 year 13 million contract and that is great. we have several trade pieces but the management here doesn't seem to high on Pinto. I do not object to including someone else. I do know the Bluejays are wanting to be in win now mode so prospects are not likely to be their priority unless they are ready now and Pinto fits that and can take Lind's place. I would be cool with a Gilmartin and the Bluejays keeping their 3,000,000. I don't know if that benefits the Bluejays enough to make the trade.

The bullpen is solid. We could roll with 4 or 5 of the same 6 pitchers with Burton out and maybe Swarzak. I am not going to say he's definitely out at this point as most of the options from the high minors are ok options but not great and Swarzak is still not too expensive. So we'll see with him. In terms of whose good enough to stay I think Perkins, obviously, Thielbar cause he too was effective again and inexpensive, Fien was 2nd best reliever, and Deunsing was arguably the best first half reliever that didn't close games. But adding a few power arms will be a big welcome addition to the pen as Burdi could move Fien to the 7th inning and Oliveras or Achter may replace Swarzak as the long man. I would think that would be enough of an overhaul to start the season unless Deunsing is included in a trade which I can see as a possibility especially if we take on salary in that trade. I think a real key for the bullpen next year is to find another starting pitcher that can go 200 innings. Having 4 guys do that can put the bullpen in position to be real effective as they can have more rest and maybe even go to a 7 man bullpen for stretches and have a longer bench. Something I wrote about last year as part of the Twins winning formula is to have 5 solid average starters and an above average pen = a better than average team ERA.

There are numerous pitchers available for trade this offseason. Beurhle is a good option. He can pitch 190-220 innings in a season and keep the team in games. Nolasco should rebound as there wont be as much pressure on him next year. This would give the Twins 4 starters who can or should be able to pitch 180 to 210 innings next year. (Hughes, Nolasco, Beurhle, and Gibson) Now if we go out and get a different starting pitcher option too that's fine. I think for us to get Beurhle one of 2 things need to occur 1. Toronto needs to pick up some salary or 2 we get him for virtually nothing. We actually have some valuable pieces available to trade. we have a SS Escobar, C-1B-DH Pinto and bullpen help Deunsing Swarzak maybe Fien and others and prospects. Pinto, Deunsing, and a prospect like the 2B we drafted in 1rst round in 2010. for Beurhle and 3,000,000. The Jays are rumored to be shopping Lind so Pinto can be a possible replacement along with Smoak. Deunsing to be used as a mid reliever and a 3 million in savings for us and they also get a prospect. That to me works as the Jays save over 10,000,000 and maybe more when they trade Lind. We could also include Millone in the trade instead of a prospect or Deunsing if that helps the Jays out too. What do you think is a fair trade for Beurhle?
-
I think Molitor is perfect for the bench coach job. Perfect for managing the game. not sure about managing the clubhouse.
-
The stat you chose to ignore is the 200 innings per season pitched That is what Buerhle brings to the table A rested bullpen. Buerhle would give us 4 starters capable of winning 12-15/16 games a season. Plus whatever May and prospects bring to the table. Plus our bullpen is likely to implode next season from too much wear. Especially if Nolasco comes back and gives us close to 200 innings as well. Buerhle is one of many pitchers with only 1 year till FA so there are other options to trade from. But a pitcher who can give us 200 innings with minimal cost is a good idea. New Proposal: Buerhe and $5 million for Millone, Deunsing and Pinto
