While Mauer is a good hitter and defense is really good too. He is now what Mientkiewicz strived to be. His bat plays well off the bench and the lineup would be better served with another power threat in the lineup

I can see Gee pitching 5 or 6 innings giving up 3 or 4 runs. He has the best resume of the retreads who pitched here this year.

We also have the forgotten prospect in AAA for the back of rotation in Sledgers. He is 7-4 with an era around 4 and he chews up innings.

Bullpen arms in trades are not too expensive in terms of prospects. If we can acquire o e with a 25th team ranked prospect or so we should bee willing to do that for a strong rental. Its ok to give up more with years more control. But we shouldnt give up too much either.

Does this mean we get to acquire a starting pitcher now to help bolster the staff?

The Twins should have Gimenez be the starting pitcher then play all the defensive positions then put him back on the mound to close out his game.

Guys i would have thought that was a fair package before the DFA. Melo had good velo last i heard and just today im hearing 89-90. Plus his results are there. And front offices make mistakes/ change of scenery, and they would be in National League as well. I thought a good reliever prospect and someone with potential to pitch in games is a fair haul for a reliever. Who is still owed 3.5 to 4 million this year. I seriously doubt they do better than that. But if Melo sux then scratch it.

I think getting 2 pitchers who can pitch in the pen for the next several years for half season in a rebuilding year is not a bad haul. Granted these are prospects. But i doubt it takes more to get him. Mldtraderumors chat estimated a 30th ranked prospect for him. Melotakis is in that range and so was Haley. We'll see.

Also i would think they probably could have traded melotakis, with Wimmers or Haley for Neshek.

I would think Melotakis atleast earned a chance to come up and throw in a game or two first before the DFA. Such a let down with all this time vested in watching and waiting for him to get the callup

Belisle has been great in 25 of 29 appearances. Not good but not as bad as others with an era over 7. I think he gave up 15 runs in 2 innings over those 4 appearances. And 4 runs in the other 25. Lets fix the other holes before we do anything with Belisle. Breslow reminds me of Guerriers last season. He had a good era until he couldnt get anyone out anymore and was done. Though i think Breslow has a little more left in the tank still.

If only Gibson was pitching like he did 2 years ago the class of 2009 Dozier, Gibson, Sano, Kepler, and Polanco would make a good group to go against 2012 class with Buxton, Berrios, Duffey, Rogers, Chargois and more to come....

They could trade Polanco and keep Dozier or move Dozier to first. Also Dozier gets 6 million this season and 9 million in 2018. I doubt they trade Escobar. Though he is a tradeable piece. Unless the Twins fall to 7 or more games back I doubt they become sellers.

Also Gee is the most likely of the retreads we've been signing that could consistantly go 6 innings with 3 earned runs ... though i am still intrigued by Turley and wonder if he can make adjustments up here with snother start or is he a AAAA pitcher...

What about Sledgers? Is he close yo earning a callup from AAA?

I think trading for Gray makes a lot of sense. We give up one of our starting ptcher prospects Gonsalves, Jorge or Thorpe , Gordon and a reliever and or someone like Palka or another prospect in the 25-30 ranking (or there can be lots of other variations of prospects) and we have a rotation next year of Gray, Berrios, Santana, May with Hughes, Mejia, Sledgers, Romero, and probably Jorge competing for the 5th spot next season and if Thorpe is kept he could be up by the end of the season. On a side note I think Dozier may have a depressed market as a free agent since there won't be so many suitors so I can see him signing a 4 year 48-60 million contract and I doubt it gets to 60 probably in the low 50's unless it gets to 5 years then 70-75 is possible, but again how many teams will want to pay that for a second baseman? only LA maybe if the one they acquired falters. I say that to say I think we have a good chance of retaining Dozier and we do have lots of middle IF prospects in the minors. also note We have 4 more seasons of Sano after this 1, before he leaves as a Free agent. Why not try to win in all 5 of them between now and then? and last note or question to ponder as well. Will we be having 40 man roster issues as more of our depth gets up the ladder? I mean will we have to leave some good talent off the 40 man roster this year and expose to rule 5 draft? who all needs to be added this year? If we stand to loose talent that way we might as well trades and consolidate some prospects into players we can keep for several years. and FYI in the chatroom today at MLBtraderumors.com they mentioned putting out a Sonny Gray piece tomorrow for who it would make sense to acquire him. There are 9 teams featured so be on the lookout and see what they think we should do.

Remember Santana also had similar stats the second half of last year too. i think he made the adjustments last May or Early June if I remember correctly. So he has been pitching good since then.

Aaron Sledgers is a solid back of rotation prospect doing well at AAA too. He should get an opportunity. Also i think Turley can turn into something useful. He needs better command though. He is either middle of the plate or outside the strikezone by a fair margin. Jitters could be part of the issue. I think one moe start to see if he can right the ship before he goes back down is fair at this point.

I think there is a happy medium between doing nothing and going all in. A good reliever is not going to cost alot in terms of prospects. And we could look for a starter who won't as well...a back of rotation type. By not doing anything we are seeing a self fullfilling prophecy. We loose and there is a group that says see we suck and should wait a few more years. But if we already aquired a reliever a few weeks ago we have a deeper pen and maybe fewer meltdowns and the pyhtagorean is for 80 wins and we are still in first. We know we have a shortage in pitching. Doing nothing guarentees us falling in the standings.

Its a good thing we are not doing anything to improve the pitching staff. We might win more games if we do and stay in contention if we did.
