    Minor league stats do not matter in this type of ranking. I also do not give a tremendous amount of weight to "expectations" for rookies. That being said: Alcala = B+ (Quietly the Twins 4th best reliever despite the team never trusting him) Festa = F Matthews = F Varland = F- The leash was WAAAAAAYYYYYY to long for these guys, but it was given due to lack of options Thielbar = F (Horrendous season for the once strong reliever) No issues with the other grades, other then maybe a small uptick for Ryan (B+?)

    You are making the argument to re-sign Santana for another year (which I would be totally fine with if they can get him on another 1-yr, $5-7m deal.

    I gave Buxton an A-. I thought he played very well. IMO, rookies have no real expectations, you have to go more off of performance. Outside of SWR, the Twins rookie crop this year was very underwhelming

    No issues with raising the bar, but that is a Pohlad issue, not a Santana issue. Factoring in salary, the Santana FA signing was probably top 2-3 in baseball this past offseason.

    Fair question. Using hitting only: - He greatly exceeded pre-season expectations - Second on the team in Games and PA (not injury related, but an important factor in his numbers) - Led the team in HR and RBI I think the expectation piece is a huge part of this. We expected Lewis to provide more, but his second half destroyed his numbers. Lewis first half = A, second half = D. the C grade feels fair. If you don't think expectations are part of this discussion, then feel free to lower Santana's grade.

    Disappointing in that the writing was on the wall. The Twins have a strong core in place, both pitching and defensively, but ownership forced the FO to role the dice with youth and retreads everywhere, basically getting nothing out of anyone and doing nothing to help correct the situation. Make no mistake that injuries played a huge part in how this year went. But 20% of pitched innings went to Paddack, Varland, Matthews, Festa, and Thielbar. Not acceptable for a team supposedly in playoff contention.

    I agree that injuries should not be part of the equation. That being said: Correa = A Buxton = A- Santana = B+ (factoring in his defense, he basically anchored the team this year) Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't our catching unit rank in the top third on offense in baseball this year? Interesting that you gave out C/D grades for that... What also scares me is that Julien (F), Miranda, (D+), Martin (D+) and probably Lee (D) are all currently penciled in to start or be heavy rotation players next year...

    This is a very similar discussion we had with Miranda at this time last year... He is young and cheap. Unless they include him in some sort of trade, expect Julien to be in the organization for the next few years.

    The saying goes, you have to spend money to make money. What is really sad about the Stadium experience, is that Target Field is a great place to watch baseball, probably top 3 (non-nostalgia category) in baseball. It is the minutia that ruins it.

    Attendance is down. Team support is down. Gee, I wonder why? Somebody tell me why I, as a fan, am supposed to care more about the Twins product then the individuals that actually own the product?

    Thank you for the article. Really well written and a different narrative then we have seen lately about the Twins being in a pennant race. Many people are quick to blame the FO (they spend the moneslightly exceedy!) over Ownership for the current problems. I need to remind people of a few things: - Injuries plagued this team consistently all year. - Castro, Wallner, Miranda, Larnach, even Santana and the Jeffers/Vazquez combination exceeded all expectations this year. - Buxton and Correa were back to elite form when on the field (regardless of your usage opinions. Outside of his recent slump, the same can be said of Lewis. - Ober and Ryan met or exceeded expectations this year. SWR definitely exceeded expectations this year. Sands and Alcala came back from the dead. Jax turned the corner from good to one of the better relievers in baseball. I say this not to cherry pick the success stories. Lopez took a step back. Margot, Kepler. Farmer, and Thielbar did not perform to expectations. But player-by-player, this team exceeded expectations. Where they failed was the lack of spending on depth. When vets went down or stunk (Paddack, Okert Jackson) and the injuries started to pile up on the core players, the Twins had no option but to go with the youth. When the younger players (Varland, Festa, Matthews, Martin, Lee, Julien, Kiriloff) failed, the Twins had no choice but to keep running them out there because ownership gave the FO no money to work with. Enjoy the high stakes games now, because when the season is over and the Twins do not make the playoffs, the blame squarely on ownership.

    Ummm... considering the window is small, and the concern about load management has to do with playing in "meaningful" games and innings, yeah 4 games should about cover it. How many more games do you want them to play before you change your mind? Considering there is only 6 games left, not much room left to change your opinion

    Yeah... I think this issue/complaint needs to die. Both Correa and Buxton have played in the last 4 games including both ends of Sunday's doubleheader. Any load management concerns are gone. On to bigger problems...

    The saying goes: Jack of all trades, master of none. The positive is positional flexibility. The negative is the lack of defensive quality. The Twins currently prefer the former over the latter. This issue alone may be the strongest reason to bring Carlos Santana back next year.

    This article could have been written in one paragraph: The Twins were not allowed to spend any substantive money at the deadline. They players the team would have wanted to trade had no trade value. They could not move valuable pieces as they were in a pennant race. We are now seeing the results of that mess.
