  1. With the division games we should get off to a decent start but I am still feeling the burn from last season. So seeing as we have not changed much from last year's approach - we will try to best last year's start and go 0-22 for April with 3 rainouts giving us some blessed relief from the losses. Now that I have set that low expectation anything else will be a plus for me. I aim very low.
  2. I think we know how this will end up - but it is Spring and we can always hope for the best. We will see how Belisle and Breslow do - we could have signed some higher profile relievers. I thought a given that Chargois would be in at least the setup discussion, so hopefully he performs well at AAA and comes up soon. We have got to develop some power arms to at least get in the mix.
  3. Some good reasons for optimism pointed out in the article and we have 5 consecutive years of his actual ERA being lower than his FIP with 2 different teams. Yes, as long as we do not try to change him I am cautiously optimistic about Santiago having a good year for us. Good being defined as our 2nd or 3rd best starter and within 10% of his career average stats.
  4. We are pretty thin at WR - Diggs and Thielen, Treadwell who did nothing last year and Wright who was in the doghouse. Unless Boehringer comes out of nowhere. Glad we traded those 4 picks to move up to get Cordarrelle only to let him walk. He openly tweeted he hoped to come back to Minnesota so I guess we really did not want him.
  5. Certainly not an overly exciting signing but can't hurt to add some competition or injury insurance. Watched him the last couple of years when he played for Texas - he was a fill-in type last player on the bench player. Interestingly, for a time period he was used as a late inning Defensive replacement in CF - he had some good wheels.
  6. I have tried my hardest to forget about last season but to the best of my memory - we earned every one of those 103 losses with a combination of bad managing, bad starting pitching, bad relief pitching, bad defense etc...If I put on my rose-colored glass for this season as hope springs eternal - we will be better this season because (1) Buxton, Sano, Rosario, Kepler, Berrios will be improved on both Offense and Defense with help from the old vets we brought in Hunter, Cuddyer and Hawkins (2) Castro will provide better pitch-framing and game calling? giving our pitchers more confidence and Murphy/Garver will help more as backups (3) May and Hughes come back to the rotation to give more stability (4) we find a SS that can give us average defense (4) Jepsen is not in our bullpen this year (5) Someone will help Molitor with managing decisions/he will have learned from experience (6) Santana and Dozier performance does not fall off the face of the earth (7) Other teams in our division will be taking a step back like Chi, KC and Det My hope for this seaon - I would like to break the 70 win mark and for the team to show continued improvement this year - looking forward to the season.
  7. Nice article Seth! Honestly, I had sort of forgotten we took Haley in the Rule 5 draft - anything we get from him will be a nice bonus. I like his work ethic - hope things turn out well for both him and the Twins.
  8. Don't see a fit here - we already have Mauer at first. In essence they are the same player. The only situation I could see is if we are in June and Vargas and Park are both a disaster or Mauer is injured and the season is not down the toilet then maybe.
  9. I am also dissapointed in the offseason although it is not over yet. I would also give it a D- Signing Castro was a good start but we have done nothing else. Other needs I thought we needed were a RH outfielder that can field to platoon with Rosario and Kepler (Rajai Davis/Crisp). A utility infielder to backup 3B/SS (Aybar/Drew) and an experienced bullpen arm (Storen/Feliz). Signings that would not take away from developing our younger players but providing good experienced depth. Absent the signings we have to hope Grossman rediscovers his glove and/or Polanco can turn into a superutility stud. We also have to hope the youngsters all take a step up this year with the help of the former Twins advisors we brought in and veterans Mauer, Dozier and Santana don't drop off (which could be likely) to avoid a repeat of last years disaster.
  10. Great article and nice insight that he is working out with Larkin and Lindor. Fingers-crossed that he continues to develop and move up the ladder.
  11. Great idea to do this! I am another old-timer - recently turning 53. I have an Electrical Engineering degree and worked in Defense but went to get my MBA and now in the Financial business. I have been a Twins fan since the late 60's or as long as I have followed baseball. I was born in Washington DC and have lived in Maryland, the gulf coast of Mississippi, Southern California and currently in Arlington, TX. So why am I a Twins fan - too long to explain and would only make sense to my 5 yr old self but I am a die-hard loyal fan of all Minnesota teams. My favorite Twin of all-time is Tony Oliva also liked Killebrew, Carew, Blyleven, Larry Hisle, Bill Campbell, Puckett, Aguilera, Radke, Johan Santana. Best memories are whenever I got to see the Twins in person, the '87 series win because the first is always special, and the topper which I have mentioned before on here was the Twins winning the '91 series in game 7 on my birthday. I was following Seth's site - so I followed that to Twins Daily when it began. This is a great source for all information on the Twins and their minor league teams and I try to check it almost every day. During the season I especially like the minor league daily updates (especially when the big league team is having a bad year) and the game threads because I don't get to watch many games. Here's to a Great 2017 season!
  12. Yes, what a great hitter and a bright spot as I followed the Twins as a kid in the 70's. My thoughts are with him and his family and the doctors for a successful transplant surgery and that his body accepts the new organs.
  13. Sorry for the delayed response - the Rangers view Gallo like Profar - highly rated prospects. They are talking about both of them being in the mix of playing 1B/DH along with Ryan Rua. Personally, I am skeptical of Gallo - yes he has raw power but so far he has struck out in over 50% of his mlb at-bats. Although Chris Davis had a similar beginning and the Rangers gave up on him - traded him to Baltimore where he took off - so I am sure the Rangers will give him plenty of time. I like Palka better than Gallo as a hitter. Gallo can play 3B/1B.
  14. I live in Texas Rangers territory so I have seen him since he has come up. I think most of you have it nailed - he has potential but not worth the asking price from the Rangers. He had a serious shoulder injury - torn labrum which cost him large portions of the 2014-2015 seasons - so he has not played much SS the past 3 years so a bit of unknown whether he could play full time there - Levine would know best though. He started out last season hitting well but fell off the cliff toward the end of the 2nd half of last season. The Rangers need a player like him so the fact they are trying to sell high is enough for me to say no thanks. If it were a buy low deal it might be worth the chance.
  15. I think they got this one correct - not sad to see the All-Star game determining Home field advantage go away. I could see also using overall Interleague record as well but I think I prefer the old-fashioned whichever team has the best record like they use in the NBA. Wonder what they do in case of a tie?
  16. I would tender all given this outsider's opinion. Depending on your thoughts on pitch-framing - Castro and Murphy/Garver should help Santiago nibble better and could also help Gibson as well. Kintzler and Pressly are inexpensive for what they can provide. Barring other trades or signings, Escobar is a need - he can fill-in at 3B or SS and is probably the best SS on the roster. Unless the new regime has a trade or signing that brings in a SS - Escobar needs to be retained.
  17. Late to the party here but I think the signing is great! This fits a need and our pitching staff needs the help - time will tell how much.
  18. Plouffe had a good run - I remember when he started at 3B there were quite a few fielding misadventures but he made himself into a respectable fielder and found his power stroke. He is not worth $8M a year so I am totally onboard with the Twins decision but hope he finds a good home and has a few more good seasons playing ball.
  19. Hey, Brandon! very nice write-up that follows most of what I was thinking. Totally onboard with getting Castro. I also think we need to sign a veteran Right-hand hitting outfielder that can play multiple spots to platoon with Rosario and spell Buxton and Kepler from time-to-time - so Gomez would fit that bill. I might try to find someone cheaper. Would love to acquire a Coco Crisp or Rajai Davis type. 2 areas where I might differ - I would prefer to let Plouffe go and replace him with Polanco. So 3B could be manned by a combination of Sano, Polanco and Escobar with SS split between Polanco and Escobar. 2nd area of concern is the bullpen - would like to get another proven veteran or two. Also since Hughes may not start the year, I am worried about the rotation. I would agree with you that we dangle Dozier and Santana and bite on a good deal for us but I don't think we will get that good deal we are looking for.
  20. An argument for signing a free agent or 2 would be what the Yankees did this past season. Relief Pitching is always in high demand at the trade deadline. The Yanks were able to trade Miller and Chapman for multiple prospects (granted those were 2 studs). Say we signed Feliz and/or Holland this year and they built up some "save" value. if we are out of the race come the end of July and we have built up some of our young relief pitchers - Feliz or Holland could be flipped for a good return - obviously less value than Miller and Chapman would get but still good. They would serve as an insurance policy and buffer so the young guys can build up their confidence in less stressful pitching situations.
  21. Not that I am any expert but I am a big Granite fan! Love his skill set (speed, good eye, and defense) and think he would be a good addition for us sometime next year as 4th OF. He is another Lefthander - so not a platoon option with Rosario unfortunately.
  22. Thanks for laying out the first blueprint - a lot to like about it. Like the bullpen and rotating Vargas, Mauer at 1st/DH with Grossman limited to DH or playing in the OF when we have a groundball pitcher throwing. Park and Walker could be other options rather than Grossman. One thing I think the team needs to add is a strong veteran leader and Rajai Davis may fill that bill. Without digging into too much I was thinking we should go after Ian Desmond. He normally has played SS (average defensively) but has transitioned to the outfield this year for Texas and has experienced a winning culture. He is a real good character guy. He could play SS and with the flexibility to move to outfield if Vielma or Gordon develop - might cost too much though and do you want to forfeit a draft pick. At catcher, I don't care so much for hitting - at this point I will take anyone that can frame a pitch and knows how to call a game by mixing pitches.
  23. Since he won't start until Cleveland is eliminated and I want him to start as soon as possible - I guess I will be a Red Sox fan for the next week.
  24. Another positive - Molitor did not pull Berrios at 4 2/3 innings and in a jam and he got out of it!
