  1. I thought Walner had a chance to get the runner out at home, Not a great throw.
  2. As Chief would say: Yes. Aside from many DHs, Jeff Kent was a great hitting second baseman who was not very good defensively and not a fast base runner.
  3. I think the Turks won the 1467 World Series. :) (Good memory with the Ron Hunt reference,)
  4. Wow that LP is a throwback. And "Loaned For Promotion" ... did you work at a radio station?
  5. Professional hitting by Solano. Doesn't try to pull everything.
  6. Any local IPAs to recommend? Watching this game I think I'll need one soon.
  7. No robot umps in MLB in 2024 apparently: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/37859926/robot-umpires-not-likely-mlb-call-2024-manfred-says
  8. Since Buxton's contract extension came after his knee surgery, do we figure that the FO expected Buxton to be ready for spring training when they signed him? But that just didn't happen? Hard to believe they didn't give him a full physical workup before they signed him.
  9. Should have been out by a mile. We'll take it.
  10. Decent outing by Ober. Same with Lopez yesterday. No run support. (I know, it's a broken record.)
  11. AJ just said the Twins are 5th in MLB in percentage of runs scored via the home run: 48%.
  12. Yeah, we have way too many bat-only players (Julien, Miranda, Larnach, now Buxton I guess). Even Lewis has struggled at 3B.
  13. Not much good news, but I appreciate the well-written Week In Review every week, Nick! Players on other teams (such as the Mets) have recently complained that hitting coaches (working closely with an analytical FO) have overwhelmed batters with information, to the point that they suffer paralysis by analysis. This is all I can come up with regarding why so many Twins have higher than usual K rates this season, with so many called third strikes in key situations.
  14. I agree completely with the second paragraph. So there's not much point in calling to get rid of Rocco but keeping the FO.
  15. This article by Tom Verducci points out how speed and small-ball seem to be a strategy again. The current Twins are not built for this at all, which is a problem. https://www.si.com/mlb/2023/04/05/diamondbacks-padres-mlb-new-rules-stolen-bases-speed
  16. Interesting take on the trade from SI.com: https://www.si.com/mlb/2023/01/20/luis-arraez-trade-pablo-lopez-twins-marlins
  17. I'm not sure how many owners would have to vote in favor of a salary cap. It might be 2/3 (20 out of 30). (Does anyone on TD know?) And then the players' union would also have to agree to it, and they have shown no inclination to do so. (FWIW, the owners tried to implement a salary cap in 1994, the players went on strike, and the season was cancelled: https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2019/08/12/baseball-strike-in-1994-95-began-25-years-ago/)
  18. Agree about the lack of fundamentals. There's an interesting quote from Steven Kwan of the Guardians (in an article on ESPN.com) about how Francona emphasizes the little things: "He called me into his office, which he normally doesn't do," Kwan said. "And he pulls up a video and it's a runner on first and I hit a single to right. The runner goes first to third and the right fielder sails the ball and I'm standing on first. "He asks me why I didn't take second base? I told him I hadn't had a hit in while and I got to first and I was happy to be there. He was like 'No kid, that's not what we're about. If we're going to do this we're going to do it the right way.' "That stayed with me." From what we are seeing on the field it doesn't seem like the Twins' coaches are pushing fundamentals, or their conversations aren't sinking in with the players, which is just as bad.
  19. I get that giving up an out by bunting is generally a bad strategy, but it sure seems like moving the ghost runner to third is a situation where a sacrifice is appropriate. Apparently Francona thinks so. I don't recall seeing the Twins do this much if at all this season.
