  1. Odorizzi with a number of long at bats. In 4 innings so far he already has 15 2-strike foul balls.
  2. The competitive window is wide open and attendance is up, so I hope the Twins front office goes all-in and is willing to pay Kimbrel (they should have the money to do it). I look at the Twins roster and the bullpen is the one area where I'm really not comfortable. Kimbrel would go a long ways towards making high leverage situations more solid.
  3. Smeltzer earned another start with his performance tonight. I'll be curious to see what the Twins do with the rotation if he looks really good again.
  4. Astudillo might need a hot streak at the plate to keep his roster spot when Garver gets back. He's been pretty awful with the bat since he came off the IL.
  5. Parker on the mound never gives me a feeling of confidence. He's been successful this season, but it often seems like he's on the edge of imploding
  6. Twins just can't get a hit with runners in scoring position this series (2-15 so far).
  7. I suspect pushing back Perez was not planned, otherwise I would have guessed that Stewart wouldn't have started yesterday and would have been called up. Stewart has been pitching fairly well recently and has shown he is capable of pitching in the majors, so I would be surprised if the Twins intentionally bypassed him for Smeltzer.
  8. It will be interesting to see how Smeltzer does against big league competition because the Twins really need at least one of their young starters to take a step forward. Right now our starting pitcher depth is a bit iffy. Gonsalves, Mejia, and Graterol are on the IL. Romero is in the bullpen (though he should be put back in the rotation). Thorpe has been up and down, and when he's been bad he's been extremely bad. Stewart and LIttell have been OK, but neither inspire much confidence if they have to fill in for multiple starts.
  9. A winnable game that didn't go the Twins way. Minnesota had more than enough opportunities in this one (2-10 with RISP), they just couldn't get the critical hit.
  10. At one point I thought Adrianza's time with the Twins was nearing an end, but he's hit really well for the last month and probably keeps his spot. My guess is Astudillo gets optioned in the next week (when Garver gets back), he's really been struggling with the bat since he came off the IL.
  11. The Twins bullpen has pitched in very few games in recent weeks where the score was within 3 runs, I'm curious to see how they cover three innings with May struggling.
  12. Brewers have maximized their scoring opportunities, the Twins have not. It really feels like this should be much more than a 1 run lead.
  13. Pineda must hate the rain. The only inning he had any trouble was the one inning it started raining.
  14. I'm not sure how Jeffress avoided getting drilled, actually catching the ball at the same time was amazing.
  15. Sano could have a big year if he can resist swinging at pitches out of the strike zone.
  16. Cron just can't seem to get his timing down against Gonzalez, even after seeing 14 pitches in an his last bat.
  17. Pineda needs to stop throwing the ball right in the middle of the strike zone.
  18. With Gonsalves out for a while, I'm wondering if it's time to put Romero back in the AAA rotation. He hasn't found success in a bullpen role and I'd really like to see him have one more chance as a starter. Plus, I'm not particularly excited about our current options if the Twins need to call up a starter, so if Romero got stretched out he could be first in line to fill an opening in the major league rotation.
  19. I don't see the Twins taking a HS pitcher with their first pick, the bust risk is just too high. My guess is the Twins end up picking one of Stott, Manoah, Jung, or Thompson.
  20. Having 8 out of the Twins top 30 prospects on the IL is really frustrating (also on the IL are some guys who have showed promise in the minors: Bailey Ober, Tyler Wells, Brian Schales, Randy LeBlanc, Lachlan Wells, and Alex Robinson). At least Javier and Gordon are playing games again.
  21. If Cron had any speed at all he would probably have around 10 more hits this season. I can remember numerous times that he's hit a ball that was deep in the hole or wasn't fielded cleanly where I would have expected an even average runner to beat the throw.
  22. The obvious choices to make available in trade are positions with a surplus on the 40 man roster and guys who will be rule 5 eligible this off-season. I'd say the first group that provides a surplus is the middle infielder/utility type players on the 40 man roster. Adrianza, Torreyes, Gordon (#10), and Arraez (#17) could all be available, though only the last two likely have much trade value. Another surplus on the 40 man roster is in the outfield. Cave, Wade (#22), Raley (#26), and Rooker (#6) are all corner outfield depth. They all have some trade value and losing one wouldn't cause much impact on the future. The last surplus on the 40 man roster is starting pitching depth. Thorpe (#8), Gonsalves (#11), Littell (#21), and Stewart are all major league ready guys who could be pitching in the majors for a non-playoff team right now. Lastly, the soon to be rule 5 eligible class has a lot of guys who would seem to have some chance of getting taken in the draft. Out of the group Graterol (#3), Javier (#4), and Duran (#7) will probably be added to the 40 man roster and are less likely to be traded. The rest of the group includes Celestino (#15), Alcala (#18), Jax (#23), Maciel (#25), Blankenhorn (#28), Smeltzer, Colina, Cabbage, and Hackimer.
  23. I'm wondering if we see Cave up tomorrow with Adams sent down (or DFAd).
  24. While the bullpen has been solid so far, I still believe it is a significant weakness. I think a big part of the bullpen success is due to having a large number of non-competitive games. I looked back over the last 30 games and in 17 of those a Twins pitcher never took the mound in the 7th-9th innings with the game being within 3 runs (one team had at least a 4 run lead). Basically the bullpen has had a large number of low leverage innings. I fear the bullpen could be exposed if the Twins start having more frequent close games.
  25. I just don't see much chance of Adrianza lasting much longer in Minnesota. He's a bit redundant with Gonzalez and with Arraez/Gordon having options the Twins have alternatives that don't require a constant 25 man roster spot. My guess is Arraez will be the 13th man who stays on the roster when someone is on the IL or if the team goes down to 7 relievers. Gordon would come up if Polanco is out and Cave would be the outfield replacement.
