  1. The thing is that Gallo hasn't been that bad. He has an OPS just under .800. The lowest his OPS has dropped all season is .749. People need to stop including Gallo in these conversations. Yeah, he's a frustrating player to watch but he hasn't been unplayable the way Kepler and Buxton have been.
  2. Taylor isn't a full-time player, there's nothing wrong with admitting that a part-time player should play part-time. Really, it's all about Buxton. If he can't play the field, Taylor becomes horribly exposed as an every day player, particularly against right-handed pitching.
  3. I hate to say it but I start benching him against most righties until something changes.
  4. ... and play center field because the Yankees needed him to do so, it sure feels like Max Kepler can take his glove and hold it 100-ish feet to the right of where he likes to play. I don't know if it's entirely Kepler, the front office, coaches, or all of the above but the complete lack of action to shake up the lineup is indefensible at this point. Taking Taylor out of the lineup against RHP and running an outfield of Gallo, Kepler, and Wallner is so much better than what they've been doing over the past month. And that's with me not liking Kepler in the lineup at all but acknowledging he is wayyyyyyy more valuable in center if Buxton can't play there. If Aaron Judge can do it with literally $400m on the line, Kepler can move his ass over there, too. I'm getting real tired of pretty much everybody in this organization, from the very top all the way down to the guys on the field.
  5. I feel terrible for their fans. Someone keeps trying to get me to start up a Rockies site and I have nothing against the franchise - and I really like Denver - but good lord, having to follow the actions of Monfort might drive me out of baseball entirely.
  6. Never put anything past the Rockies. Remember that time they traded a potential HoF third baseman under contract for years, then paid top-dollar for another third baseman for years more, and then didn't play that third baseman at third base? Oh man. Good times, good times.
  7. This shouldn't be news but remember, we're talking about the Colorado Rockies here. This franchise has seen multiple trade deadlines come and go without moving key pieces that are approaching free agency, including last year when they made no trades and instead extended reliever Daniel Bard despite being well out of contention by the beginning of July. Unfortunately, and in a very Rockies-esque move, the quotes about activity did not come from General Manager Bill Schmidt but instead were from dugout manager Bud Black, speaking to the hosts of Power Alley on SiriusXM Radio. The most obvious and easy fit for the Twins is to target old friend CJ Cron, who has suffered injuries in 2023 and is performing well under his career norms. The 33-year-old is a free agent at season's end and could likely be had for a reasonable price and given how he swings from the not-devil's side of the plate, could easily slide into the Twins lineup and provide competency against devil's-handed pitchers. 9. I'm not saying they'll trade Goldschmidt or Arenado but they need a lot of pitching help. They should be open to the possibility of trading a longer-term veteran for pitching. But given that I dislike the Cardinals immensely, I'm fine with them holding on to every aging, declining, expensive veteran they have on the roster.
  10. In the next week or two, I think the Cardinals will realize that if they really want to compete in 2024, they're going to need to give up more than their expiring contracts to bring in enough pitching to make a difference.
  11. I think Bailey Ober would be the Cardinals' first ask.
  12. Cardinals President of Baseball Operations, John Mozeliak, said in an interview that the Cardinals will be sellers at the 2023 trade deadline with hopes of retooling for a 2024 and 2025 return to competitiveness. Their focus will be on returns of young pitching, either cost-controlled MLB players or prospects in the upper minors. The Cardinals have a slew of players on expiring deals, along with players under contract for longer including superstar sluggers Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado. It is unclear how interested St Louis is in moving long-term contracts but given their collapse this season, the right deal may be able to land anyone on the roster. Who interests you from the St Louis roster and what would you be willing to give up in return? View full rumor

  14. As Twins fans, this is a situation worth monitoring closely. With Shane Bieber out for at least a few weeks (ie. past the trade deadline), it's possible the Guardians will pivot and trade Aaron Civale. Civale is still under team control for 2.5 more seasons but now that he has become arbitration eligible, it's possible Cleveland attempts to move him to either shore up their farm system or - probably more likely - to bolster their anemic offense that makes the 2023 Minnesota Twins look like Murderer's Row. Once again, this is only a possibility because the Guardians churn out young, cost-controlled starters at a rate unlike any other team in baseball.

  16. I've watched Bellinger a fair amount this season. He's still a capable center fielder. Maybe he starts declining soon but as a rental, his defense is not something that concerns me in the slightest in 2023.
  17. Yeah, that's what I meant by a year, should have clarified myself.
  18. Betts had at least a year left. I think it was a year. The Dodgers extended him before the end of the contract so he almost surely wasn't a two month rental.
  19. Actually, I think the opposite is true. I think Bellinger is going to draw a ton of demand given his defensive ability and the overall lack of hitters available at the deadline. In a normal year, I agree with your premise but there just aren't clear-cut sellers who have big bats to offer. Maybe that changes if St Louis pulls its head out of its ass and trades Goldschmidt but it's really unclear what they're thinking over there. Same applies to the Angels and Ohtani.
  20. I have a spreadsheet in front of me that says July 25th. Am I positive that is correct? No. Is it likely correct? Yes, it's coming from a guy who has been covering Cubs' drafts for years. That deadline does not apply to players who were drafted after the 10th round and have exhausted draft eligibility (college seniors). They have basically a year to sign.
  21. Buxton has a no-trade clause, the Cubs have several middle infielders and absolutely no need for Polanco, and it's going to take more than a retread/faltering prospect to land Cody Bellinger.
  22. Matt Trueblood wrote this over at North Side Baseball and it's interesting to see some posters shrug off Alex Kirilloff for Bellinger, which I think is pure madness (I would hate that trade for the Twins, FTR). Bellinger is going to be expensive. There aren't many hitters on the market and several teams appear to need a center fielder. So what would you give up for Cody? https://northsidebaseball.com/news-rumors/chicago-cubs/a-trade-a-day-should-the-cubs-trade-cody-bellinger-to-the-twins-r191/
  23. I had to walk away from the game for a few minutes and... do I even want to know what happened here?
  24. Alex Kirilloff saw this topic and resented the hell out of it.
