  1. Properly taxed inheritance helps prevent creating landed gentry, a subclass of families so rich it’s almost impossible for them to lose their wealth. Historically, not an awesome thing. Also a cliff we’re driving at full speed.
  2. My father is awful with money and therefore, I was awful with money... until I landed flat on my ass at age 30. Since then, I’ve been a pretty good saver. The savings themselves wax and wane based on what I’m paying off so my savings account may not look great at times but it means I threw a chunk of money at something recently.
  3. Wealth gets a lot trickier. I’d have to hear more about it. My wife and I have collected a fairly considerable amount of assets but we’re hardly rich. Taxing those assets could do some real damage to us if handled badly. After all, it hardly seems fair that we’d be punished for buying a cheaper house when the market bottomed, doing a lot of work to make it nicer, and paying it off in less than a decade. We now have ~$225k in equity in the place but that’s because we didn’t dive in over our heads and managed our money pretty effectively.
  4. BTW, Ben, check out the film Instant Family if you want some laughs at the expense of the foster system and its worst moments. A bit sappy overall but you can tell immediately it was written by someone who actually went through the process. My wife and I spoke over half the movie almost word-for-word at some point in the past couple of years.
  5. A good start is taxing capital gains as income. If you “make” millions of dollars every year by hoarding money in stocks and collecting dividends and cashing out gains, you’re not contributing to the economy and sure as hell shouldn’t pay a measly 15% on that money. Money making more money doesn’t create jobs, doesn’t raise the GDP, and has no tangible impact beyond the individual. Tax the hell out of it.
  6. the Boomers spawned Gen X mostly, who they immediately labeled “the slacker generation”.
  7. It’s a bigger assumption to assume two guys with a combined total of 98 games started at the MLB level are better than an established, respected defensive catcher.
  8. I suspect the front office is moving in that direction, albeit not immediately. In the case of catching, they shouldn’t make that kind of snap judgment. Astudillo is getting reps behind the dish every third day or so. When your backup catcher is Garver, I think that says a lot about how the org views Astudillo. Garver, while defensively sketchy (but also improving, at least visually), has a potentially elite bat for a catcher. If Willians is taking games away from him, that tells me the front office is intrigued by Astudillo. Also, dropping Castro is pure madness when you have a defensively-challenged catcher and a curious enigma rostered behind him. You want Castro guiding those guys as much as possible for as long as possible. Like I said last year, I think one of the worst things that happened to Mitch Garver is Castro going down for the entire season. Garver could have learned a lot about the finer points of modern catching by sitting next to Jason 162 times a year and implementing those lessons every third day.
  9. Any rational Royals fan would have swapped teams 12 months ago.
  10. I saw the getaway day lineup more as a result of the stupid early season schedule than any fixed plan going forward. I’ll be really disappointed if we see that on a regular basis with a roster that includes the flexibility of both Astudillo and Gonzalez.
  11. The past two days have taught me that the Royals are much better at losing baseball games than the Twins.
  12. I don’t think it will - or should - be that clear cut. Castro is long in the tooth and could certainly use some breaks. Garver is pretty bad behind the dish so you don’t want him out there all the time. It all boils down to how the front office views Astudillo’s defense, I think.
  13. You’re criticizing Baldelli for running his team like a modern baseball organization (mixed in with players’ lack of execution, which is hardly the fault of the manager). Outside of a few specific instances where you’re playing for one run late, sacrifices are a losing strategy. Especially in the first inning, which you just complained about. Yikes.
  14. Except that the call was that the ball landed foul well short of third. Shouldn’t the home plate ump have the call at that point? Honestly asking because I don’t know the answer.
  15. Hey everybody, Nelson Cruz is really good at swinging a baseball bat.
  16. Whether polls are good or not is largely irrelevant when you’re almost a year out from the first primaries. The candidates haven’t even started running yet. It’s all gamesmanship at this point. At this point in 2007, everyone was all “obama lol who wutever”.
  17. There’s a reason why he’s not a great player and it ain’t his legs.
  18. It was the right play. Put yourself in scoring position in a tie game. If a perfect throw is required to get you out, you do it almost every time.
  19. I don’t even care if he’s out, Rosario is so much fun on the basepaths.
  20. Wait, what? He didn’t hit a five run homer?
  21. You don’t give starters “days off” when they’re playing every other day because the early April schedule in modern MLB is stupid.
  22. Cron hit a solid line drive but it had the bad luck of going almost directly at the third baseman.
  23. Lots of teams who value pitch framing and catcher defense. Seriously, the Astudillo hot takes in this thread are making my head spin. He’s a fun player and a player I want to see more of going forward but handing everyday duties to him at pretty much any position is madly irresponsible. This team has proven players at most positions and many of them are defensively proficient. Stop drooling over OPS+ numbers over 100 PAs. I expect better from the posters on this site.
