  1. It has been mildly disappointing, as Gibson is still obviously struggling to regain strength. Mejia crapped the bed last night but other than that, it was an okay game. Long season, not worried yet.
  2. Yes, this 2-1 deficit to the Blue Jays in the sixth inning is too much for anyone to overcome. Seriously. And we wonder why game threads have died on this site.
  3. Again, if you break down 550+ PAs a season that way, you’ll be disappointed. This is a game of failure. See pitch, hit pitch. What happens if Max takes a good pitch and then dives out on a worse pitch to fall back 0-2 in the count? He missed his pitch to conform to a predisposed idea of what the plate appearance should be, not what it is. See your pitch, hit your pitch. It’s literally all we can ask for in a game this hard.
  4. See my later post. If you watch film of Ted Williams over a season, you’ll find ways to “criticize” his approach. Again, baseball is hard. All but the most elite players fail 65% of the time. Sometimes you see a good pitch and miss it or roll over on it. That’s baseball. Critiquing those kinds of failures makes for a long, long season.
  5. It hasn’t been good but also a small sample size. This is a good lesson why temperance is the word of the day in baseball... and that’s a knife that cuts both ways.
  6. My point is that fans take a little too aggressive approach to seasons that have 550+ plate appearances. Baseball is hard. Really, really hard. Max thought he got the pitch he wanted and swung. It didn’t work out. That happens.
  7. Totally fine. Start a thread about it in the off-topic forum if you want.
  8. Take the pitches you like. It’s not as if Max is flailing away out there. He’s hitting well this season and the pitch wasn’t out of the zone from what I could see.
  9. Unless I missed something, the pitch seemed fine. Sometimes you take a hack and roll over on one. It’s hardly news-worthy in a 162 game season.
  10. No game thread yet? Two teams will face off. Likely only one of them will win. Discuss.
  11. No, of course not. But how you build a staff is from within. It’s a long season but I think they keep a pitcher, probably Pineda. Maybe Gibson though. Then go find a couple of pitchers in free agency.
  12. By the time this question absolutely needs to be answered (likely Sano’s return), I think the answer will be pretty easy. My initial thoughts are Astudillo. I think he cools off a bit and the front office shuffles him to Rochester for a few months, ready to be called up if any one of a handful of players get injured.
  13. I think you just answered the question “Why has this front office traded so many players over the last couple of deadlines?”
  14. Unless they’ve radically changed it recently, BR dWAR is close to useless for catchers. If memory serves, it only captures the easiest of stats: passed balls, caught stealing, etc. Other metrics have created catcher-specific systems that try to better capture what makes a good/bad catcher.
  15. After this start, I’m surprised they’d be that dismissive. Cleveland’s offense has the potential to be really pathetic this season. Sure, their pitching should be pretty good but teams still need to score to win baseball games. They’re just 9-7 on the season after playing an incredibly cupcake schedule to start the season (KC, TOR, CWS, DET).
  16. Negative OPS+ numbers are actually pretty common early in the season. When you posted this, Castro had all of 10 PAs on the season. That’s basically 2+ games, not even a full series.
  17. It’s super early so the metrics need more time to stabilize but Garver isn’t loved by any of them this year, either. BP has him 17th worst in baseball this season. Astudillo seems to do okay though.
  18. Nah, last year wasn't that bad. 2016, on the other hand...
  19. Yep. I can't recall ever seeing that happen before (where a runner gets picked off, not being confused by the count... I've seen that several times).
  20. I remember what it was like to watch baseball played the way the Jays are playing it right now. I feel for their fanbase.
  21. I'm not entirely ready to write him off yet. It will be interesting to see how the increased velocity impacts his performance, if it does at all. At least he's not throwing the ball all over the place tonight. His command is decent, much better than his bullpen innings.
  22. Shoemaker is kinda falling apart out there. Take advantage of it.
  23. Have any balls off the Jays' bats had an exit velocity under 100mph? Perez is getting by with a bit of smoke and mirrors tonight.
