  1. Minnesota doesn't really benefit much from it, though. We're smack-dab in the middle of population, which makes us pretty EC-neutral.
  2. Yepppppppp. It's an idiotic stance, to be blunt about it. Even if she's right - and abolition is definitely better than what we have now - it's a dumb political stance that doesn't really win you much in the primary but can lose you a lot in a general. And I say this as a person who tepidly prefers Warren over the rest of the field right now.
  3. From what I read on it, the problem wasn't the Twins, it was Berrios. The kid thinks highly of himself, as he should. His price tag is likely linked to that mentality. And good for him.
  4. The Japanese seemed to do a pretty bang-up job of saying all those things just 70 years ago.
  5. Holy balls, man, you don't actually believe this, do you? WHY DOES ANYONE LEAVE ANYWHERE? It's not because you're like "hey, this paradise is great and all but I'd *really* like to go find a not-paradise and **** it up for them". Arab immigrants have left for the same reason Irish immigrants left. Or Mexican immigrants. Or Italian immigrants. Or Somali immigrants. Or German immigrants. Man, I REALLY need you to understand this right now. I DESPERATELY NEED YOU TO UNDERSTAND THIS RIGHT NOW. Almost all immigrants leave their native countries for the same reason: PAIN.
  6. I don't think it's particularly helpful but I'm not sure, either. We need to draw a straight line from indifference to hate but I don't think this graph really does it convincingly. Also, I don't have a better graph on hand so I'll shut up now.
  7. Isn't that what I implied with the paragraphs you cut out of my post?
  8. Oh, it's a hard decision. Honestly, I'm not even saying it shouldn't have happened. Given what was done to the Jews in the 30s and 40s, they deserved a refuge. But maybe putting their new country in a populated area (that would need to be displaced) that happens to be the nexus of all Abrahamic religions wasn't such a hot idea. That isn't really a radical statement.
  9. Yikes, I think you're missing the take here. Yeah, several of those guys will end up as relievers but that's the point of development, isn't it? The team just hired a new pitching coach who is all about development and analytics. If he can't turn at least one of those guys into a real starter, then the team has problems and he might not be the right guy. Personally, I think it'd be a travesty if Lewis and Romero don't turn into legit starters. With all that said, I still hate the Twins offseason in regards to pitching. One guy. Literally one reliever and I'd feel more confident about the coming season.
  10. That's not really fair. Aaron said he wasn't good when he wasn't good. Aaron was also one of the first people to speak up when Gibson actually became good. Some guy at BP (I think??) wrote an article about Kyle's change of approach and Aaron changed his opinion at that time, as any rational person would do. And that take happened like a month after the change of approach when Gibson still had a 5-ish ERA so it wasn't hindsight at all.
  11. YAY! We expect to do the same in 2-3 months.
  12. I don't understand how it's so difficult to understand that the formation of Israel was one of the worst decisions the western countries made after the war. So now what do we do about that awful decision?
  13. I'd offer 3/$39m and see where that gets me. Maybe even 3/$42 if I could frontload that $3-4m to the first year and that gets the job done.
  14. Oh, this is fun. So now we're in a conversation where we support the prince of a country after he pretty obviously killed a journalist and his government is now putting protestors on trial... and also a nation that continues to drift to the right and has recently started imposing restrictions on native citizens that don't match a specified religion. This sounds like something I super want to be on board with, where do I sign up? Seriously, get the **** out. We can tepidly support any nation in the middle east but **** all these clowns. To move behind any individual nation, especially as fervently as we have some, causes as many problems as it fixes. Stop selling arms to the middle east. If it comes to war, let them figure it out. For about 20 years, this is a large part of the reason why I thought green energy was so important to pursue. If you don't need oil, the Middle East becomes Africa. Yes, still a tragedy. Yes, we should still intervene during the worst atrocities. No, we shouldn't run their countries because that has caused most of the strife for the past millennia. Let those bastards scrap it out amongst themselves, they have massive cultural conflicts we cannot resolve as outsiders.
  15. Thanks, I was wondering about this. It didn’t make sense to pass over Berrios during the extension talks. Turns out, they didn’t.
  16. Another solution is to make all loans interest-free starting today. If you have a $100k loan (and the average debt leaving school is around $40k as of 2016) at 5.5% interest, using a 20 year schedule, the difference in payment between interest and no-interest is $690/mo versus $420/mo. Lots of ways to approach this problem while keeping the taxpayer bill moderately reasonable. Besides, I think we can all agree that the government should not be profiting from education (and the interest rate is well over the inflationary rate so, yes, they are definitely profiting).
  17. To be clear, I am wholly against any kind of forgiveness without some stern action taken to slap the entire system around and change pretty much everything about how we pay for upper education.
  18. And I did that math in my head! i r smert
  19. If you lop 25% off the top of a loan in one fell swoop, you probably lose about 40% of the payment term in the process... maybe even more with some of these interest-only problems people are having with student loans. Your numbers are waaaaaaaaay off here.
  20. I was actually bouncing this concept around in my head this morning, thanks for reminding me of it. I like this idea and would fully support it. Again, I want to fix the problem but I'm not going to start throwing massive stacks of cash to every person, ignoring how good or bad their decision-making may be in the process.
  21. I'm not sure how handing individuals tens of thousands of dollars does "nothing". I'm literally talking about handing a young married couple roughly 25% of the purchase price of a suburban home ($25k per person). Yeah, people are struggling. People pay interest-only for far too long because the system is broken. If a person can't get past interest-only payments after someone hands them $25k (and remember, that was just a number I pulled out of my ass, not a line drawn in the sand), mistakes were made along the way. Big mistakes. And I'm not generally a fan of shouldering the burden of other peoples' big mistakes, especially when it comes at the expense of other programs I want to see in place.
  22. Good god. I'm on board with a massive handout and my opinion has been equated to opposing the $15 minimum wage and now handing a $5 bill to a homeless veteran. Listen to yourselves. Honestly.
  23. Erasing trillions of dollars never costs "nothing". That money goes back into the budget for the government to spend.
  24. Bolded: thank god someone else sees the inequity of the proposals being bandied about. Rest of the post: See, now this is something I could get behind. Again, I want to help. I won't bail out everyone, especially the ridiculous fringe cases.
  25. Jesus. It's almost as if no one is paying attention that I'm literally offering to help shoulder the burden of hundreds of billions of dollars of debt I didn't take on. Where I draw the line is when the "b" in billions is replaced by a "t". And yes, I believe that some kid who decided they just had to go to an out of state Big Ten school and racked up debt well into the six figures should not foist their burden on to me or the kid who went to Mankato State and has debt in the low five figures. And none of you seem to give a damn about the expense of such a program. What about child care? Social programs? Healthcare? Why do a select few get to burden society so greatly at the expense of other programs we also desperately need?
