  1. It is interesting they didn’t get him. If I recall correctly, they were in on him but he ended up in Miami, who everyone knew was going to be terrible. I wonder what happened.
  2. I also want the front office to be more aggressive in this regard but Graterol is rehabbing a shoulder issue. That’s probably not the guy you get aggressive with late in a season.
  3. Could they use him? Maybe. Will he be ready for MLB hitters or will they want to trigger his 40-man roster activation? Unlikely.
  4. He'd be claimed this year. In 2017, he was a chunky, mediocre first baseman in low A ball. In 2018, he was a really bad first baseman in high A ball (as in "under .600 OPS" bad). In 2019, he's a slimmed down pretty good defensive first baseman with an OPS of .900 split between A+/AA. That guy gets claimed, for sure.
  5. I think it’s just an odd year, especially with the Mets being crazy and San Diego considering getting in on the fun, too.
  6. We’re 48 hours from the deadline and Stroman is the only big name to move. Can anyone remember a deadline coming together this slowly?
  7. There are reasons not to love Stroman, lots of them. I’d still take him, though. But given how the front office seemed so lukewarm on him given their reported interest, there’s probably something they don’t like about him (also notice the Astros appeared to have no interest as well, not a great sign).
  8. The Twins have been involved in more rumors than I’ve ever seen before and everyone good not named Stroman is still on board (which is weird in itself, really). I’d be shocked if we don’t see one more good relief arm come to the team. As for the postseason, the Twins are close to a lock. They’re five games up on the second WC and have literally the easiest schedule in baseball through the end of the season. But without another good arm, they could easily end up in that WC game, which would be a pretty big failure in itself.
  9. Yeah, almost a zero chance on Buxton, I think. Rosario might happen. It depends on the return, which I think is a big hurdle to overcome. Corner OF don’t bring a lot back nowadays unless they’re elite. Rosario is simply good.
  10. Sure, a margin of error exists... but it exists in both directions. It’s equally likely that Cron is a two WAR player that it is he’s a zero WAR player. Therefore, I go with the number listed next to his name, which puts him as maybe a slightly subpar starter. And I’m not even sure I buy into that but baseball offense is so batty this season that it’s hard to wrap my head around what is good, bad, or average. It doesn’t help that B-Ref has him valued so differently.
  11. Though, as someone else pointed out on the forum, swapping a reliever with the Giants for Schoop makes a hell of a lot of sense. They have Solano playing well right now but Schoop is a better player. If the Giants are going to make a push, that could be a good way to do it.
  12. Definitely possible and frankly, I like what the Mets gave for Stroman. I just don't like what the Mets are thinking right now, and it seems most of baseball agrees. But also, why didn't the Twins offer a comparable package?
  13. The Twins win the Yankees series with Buxton in center. He's just that kind of guy. During those close games when he's missing, it feels like at least once every game you say "damn, Buxton catches that". And it happened approximately 59 times during the Yankees series. Damn, that series was ugly. Also, I hate Jake Cave.
  14. Sure, so now one WAR is replacement level. Why not two WAR? Why not -1 WAR? -2 WAR? The literal definition of the phrase ceases to have meaning if you play that fast and loose with it. First off, a "replacement player" is not necessarily available. You could go from what is close to a guaranteed +1 WAR to a -1 WAR without blinking. Or maybe you'll get a +3 WAR, who the **** knows? The point is that a replacement player's value is centered around a number. Cron is better than that. Therefore, by the literal definition, he is not a "replacement level" player. Because if you eschew the artificial definition of a phrase you've put as a baseline because it suits your purposes, the phrase ceases to have any meaning whatsoever. And keep in mind that the writer of that article couched his "replacement level" view of Cron based on three games as a designated hitter. Because that means something, right? Just admit it was a trash take and move on, Mike, If you want to argue the legitimacy of Cron's performance, do it honestly.
  15. Even if you use fWAR, he's likely to end up close or at a one win value. Which literally is NOT the definition of a replacement player, unless we start using stupid math where the artificial value of a replacement player no longer means that artificial number is accurate if the player in question is one win higher than that artificial number and it fits our argument in the moment, which is totally not artificial at all.
  16. Yes, because a team with an operating budget somewhere around $300m a year should definitely prioritize an $800 plane ticket. Also, maybe they should limit the number of player bats that can go on the plane to save on fuel.
  17. So we're holding it against Cron that he happened to have three hot days at DH, which "makes him look" better than he really is at first, where he obviously is incapable of having three hot days in a row? That Fangraphs writer kinda jumped the shark right there. Honestly, that's a **** take. I'm not in love with Cron but if we're down to parsing his performance over three games while being plugged into the DH spot on a team that rotates players constantly, that's about 47 bridges too far down the "analytics" hole than any logical person should go.
  18. Being a fringe contender several games out of the second Wild Card berth is not even close to the same situation as being first in your division, only a handful of games out of homefield advantage in the American League. And I'm not giving them credit for anything except picking up Romo, to which I have said "good pickup, need more, better players" more times than I can count in the past 24 hours. What I'm not doing is complaining about them not making another move before I've found out if they make another move. The difference there is plain as day.
  19. I wasn't necessarily only speaking of free agency but also via trade. Stroman isn't an elite arm, it shouldn't be terribly difficult to find someone of his caliber on the offseason market. But also, Stroman to the Mets... *facepalm*
  20. And they finally have to play some real MLB teams starting on Tuesday (Houston, then the Angels).
  21. Like most things, the devil is in the details but depending on the prospect requirement and financial workings, I’d be all in favor of taking on Grienke.
  22. What’s even sadder is assuming that no moves are coming because past front offices were overly conservative and assuming that same ethos applies to an entirely new front office that we’ve never seen operate under these conditions.
  23. See, I think Romo lines up really well against the Yankees and Astros, though I *absolutely* want another pitcher better than him by the deadline. As we saw in the Yankees series, they were often throwing out eight righties and Gregorius. The Astros' top ten (all the qualifying batters + Springer) are made up of seven righties and just three lefties. Romo's RHB OPS against is just .632 this season. Sergio is a good step in the right direction for postseaosn alignment but more is definitely needed.
  24. Because you’re paying a premium for Stroman and throwing a full 33% of his control in the trash the moment you acquire him. And it’s not as if a good, not great, pitcher like Stroman can’t be found in the offseason. And I literally just said I get why most teams are in on Syndergaard so I don’t understand why you felt the need to repeat it again. But 2.5 years of control is considerably different than 1.5 years, especially when .5 of that control will be essentially wasted.
