  1. I don't think they shut them out that year without checking. But I remember they had some ungodly winning streak against them, like 12+ games. That may have extended over two seasons, though. Man, those Tigers teams were terrible.
  2. If Buxton is healthy, Cave is a quite good fourth outfielder. You can remove Kepler and swap in Cave and still be okay. Same goes for Rosario. But if you lose Buxton and have to rotate Kepler into center while Cave mans a corner, that's a big dropoff in two of three OF positions and really hurts the team. So stop getting hurt, Byron. And I say this as a person with a pretty immense dislike of Cave on an emotional level. He’s just a player I do not like for some reason.
  3. Are we now at the point of parsing intent behind phrases like “pretty good”, “mediocre”, and “decent”? Because ugh. Gibson still has an ERA+ of 107, btw. If you want to argue whether that’s decent, pretty good, or mediocre, have at it because I don’t care enough to participate in that kind of pedantry.
  4. Mediocre pitchers have bad stretches. No league average pitcher goes out and throws 6 IP, 3 ER in every start. That’s not how it works.
  5. Yep. Gibson can be a disappointment while still being a pretty good pitcher. The Twins need more of a #2 performance from him while they’re getting a #3 performance this season. Not a massive drop off but enough to cost a couple of wins over a season.
  6. This site is really good at showing the disparity of last night's game. Look at the hard hit numbers on the right for each pitcher and then sort by exit velocity down below for hitters. Gibson actually pitched a good game and got burned by some bad luck and sequencing. On the other hand, the Twins were mashing the ball and had very little to show for it. That's baseball sometimes, as infuriating as it may be. While I'm pretty bent out of shape over the loss because the Twins need to win these games, I'm actually encouraged by Kyle's performance and command. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/gamefeed?game_pk=567024
  7. No tech is allowed in the dugout so Rocco isn't the person who actually sees the play. He has the final say on whether the challenge is deployed or not but he's working with limited information and a very short timeline to make a decision. And I suspect whoever mans the Twins film booth has a lot more first-hand knowledge of the rules and likelihood of a play being overturned than anyone here. That doesn't mean they're automatically right but as a person who has only seen a few of these plays since the rules change, despite watching a lot of baseball, I'm not in the position to say they were wrong with such finality.
  8. Well summarized. This was not a gimme play that would automatically have been overturned. I don't know the percentages but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if New York let the call stand almost immediately. Would I have challenged? Sure, but I don't think it's some massive oversight where everyone on the Twins suddenly forgot the rules. What's more likely than the team forgetting the rules is that they have seen far more of these plays and know a challenge is likely wasted on a play of this kind.
  9. He'll be starting somewhere on the field, for sure, which means he can't come off the bench.
  10. I only endorse this if the entire stadium does the wave while singing it.
  11. Ahhh, there you go. So I was right, I simply didn't notice a rules change.
  12. Good to know, thanks. I thought anyone not on the 25-man at the end of August had to be an injury replacement of some kind. I didn't know all it required was a 40-man spot.
  13. Buxton hasn’t even announced when he’ll rehab. The likelihood of him being back before September is pretty small, I think.
  14. I don't care about the regular season but I kinda want Astudillo on the postseason roster for flexibility at catcher and the value of having a guy on the bench close and late when you absolutely need contact.
  15. It makes more sense to give him a break in September, as you can fill in with Thorpe, Smeltzer, or whomever and not worry about fiddling with the roster. And no need for the IL in September.
  16. Chicago isn't awful so that might be asking a bit much. 9-4 sounds good to me. 8-5 will enter dangerous territory. They need to win two out of three games for the next couple of weeks.
  17. Astudillo won't be back before September because there's no space for him on the roster.
  18. I'd be surprised if they're September call-ups. While you can play the injury shuffle and get a player into the postseason who was a September call-up, I think one of Graterol and Alcala will be up in August to avoid difficulty if the Twins *also* want to put a guy like Astudillo on the postseason roster (though unlikely). I don't think both pitchers make the August roster, there's just not enough room and the bullpen is pretty solid right now, but there's certainly room to squeak one of them on by August 30th.
  19. Actually, I'm rather unconcerned with the pen at this point. With Dyson back in the mix, Rogers should get plenty of breathers (and his load has been pretty light for the past week+). My biggest questions going forward are: 1. Buxton? Will he be here in September and will he be the 2019 Buxton? 2. Berrios, Gibson, Odorizzi. What version will we get and is there anything Baldelli can do to relieve them a bit to make sure they're good going into October? Sure, it's possible the Twins don't make October and that'd be a travesty. But the AL is pretty fierce this season. I'm only wondering if there's a way to start easing up on some of the starters who either haven't missed a start or have barely missed time and still remain competitive.
  20. That’s one hell of a write-up, Nick. I don’t think you missed a single thing of note this week.
  21. It was bound to equal out in time but it’d still be nice to see a team that launches moonshots at a historic pace manage to occasionally do it with the bases juiced.
