Gardenhire did not confirm Welker as the return on his show this morning. In fact he said it was a just a rumor.

 

He may need to say this if Welker has not cleared waivers.

He would also need to be added to the 40-man roster. So that decision has to be made before it can be officially announced.

It's also not a given that it is Welker. One reporter started the discussion by saying that Sources said it would be Duke Welker. It could be, but until we know something more, we don't know. He may have to clear waivers, but Indianapolis is also giong to the playoffs, so the twins may have said, Let him keep pitching and we'll make the deal at the end of the year. Terry Ryan is saying that there is an agreed upon list, and that Pittsburgh ultimately will pick someone from that list after the season. So, I wouldn't guarantee it's Welker at this point. Some pretty questionable reporting on this so far.

But don't you think it is safe to assume Welker is on that list? That should give us an idea of the type of PTBNL to expect -- a list is not going to include Welker and, say, a top 10 prospect.

I'd be surprised if its not Welker, at this point. Even the great Peter Gammons tweeted about it.
