Demotions of Diamond, Hicks Were Overdue

I looked at why Diamond and Hicks were demoted and what to expect from Arcia and (hopefully) Andrew Albers.

At least Twins fans get to see Arcia hit. When he's right, he's the Twins' best power hitter right now. Unfortunately, he's not so good in the outfield. With Arcia replacing Hicks, that means the outfield will consist of Arcia, Thomas and one of the Twins' two backup catchers, unless the Twins want to try and toss Chris Colabello in right field again. The outfield defense will be pretty brutal for a while.

Should the Twins have demoted Hicks after just a three-week slump? Was Butera traded just to make room on the 40-man for Albers?

I certainly wouldn't say Hicks has just had a 3 week slump, or at least his 2013 numbers would beg to differ.

I get the impression they were waiting for the deadline to pass to see who they could move. That way they could avoid any unnecessary or wasted moves. I have no problem with this mindset, and they certainly went quickly after the deadline passed.

Up until about 3 weeks ago, Hicks was slowly improving at the plate. I was fine (like others) with letting him work through it as he seemed to be improving. That said, the last 3 weeks was clearly a stall in that plan. Sending him down isn't a bad thing.

 

I'm not as convinced that this was right for Parmelee, but oh well.
