If Alex Jackson had an option it wouldn't be an issue. Victor Caratini and Jackson played pretty good in Ryan Jeffers absence.

I know this would be against the Twins way, but they should offer Jeffers a 3 year extension at a respectable rate for a catchers and if he turns it down they should move him at the deadline.

Kyle Fedko would be the odd man out if they keep 3 catchers.

What would you offer Jeffers and what do you think he would accept?

They'd have to offer him five years, fifteen per....

Yes, go to three catchers. Put Buxton on the IL, option Fedko, call up Roden. Jeffers on the team until traded, because they aren't paying him.

I think that’s probably true (5/75), but that also means we should probably make him a QO and that he wouldn’t accept it.

So what does that say about what the Twins should demand in return for him?

No chance he declines 23 million for one year, imo.

I think they can get a 45+ player back. I'd partner him with another minor league player to get more..... But I'm no GM.

I’m not saying you’re wrong that he would accept 1/23m, but that doesn’t really jive in my head with “it would take 5/75”

Obviously the AAV is a pretty big difference, but for a catcher, if you think you can get 5/75, or hell, even 4/60 as a free agent, accepting 1/23 doesn’t make much sense to me.

Fair.

It's likely the QO won't exist anyway .

I think they find a way to keep Jackson. In a small sample size, he's shown himself to be capable behind the plate and not a sure out when hitting. It wouldn't surprise me if either Caratini or Jackson has a minor injury and they go on the IL for the minimum number of days. If they can't do that, I do believe they will go temporarily with three catchers. Jackson has played a bit of outfield in the minors. He could be an emergency OF.

I posted in another thread that from what the beat writers are posting and what Shelton and Buxton have said, I don't think they will put Buxton on the IL. Should they? Tough question. We, the fans, don't know the extent of the injury or the time it will take to heal acceptable or completely.

Qualifying offers would have to be tendered in early November and decided upon by the player by Mid November. The league year ends at the end of November (with a potential lockout on Dec 1), so the QO stuff will be decided before then.

I agree that the QO will be a point of negotiation (albeit a small one) for the next CBA, but it seems unlikely to me that as part of that, they will rescind any effect of a 2026 QO.

So, while I agree that the QO will almost certainly change, and potentially even go away, I do still think it will have an effect on contracts ending this year. The most likely scenario, in my mind, is that the positive effect on teams losing players (draft compensation) will remain for at least 2027 and the negative effect on the players (signing team given up draft picks) will go away, or at least be dampened.

It's happening now. Is the smart move trading one of them now if Jeffers would accept an extension now? Obviously, it wouldn't be Jeffers traded if he signed an extension.

Alex Jackson is too valuable to lose. He may never be a starter, but he makes a solid backup for sure.

Was going to question you but after a little reasearch, you are right.  I was thinking maybe he's get a 3/45 offer, but it seems like he wouldn't get that high.

Yeah, looking at C contracts, he's probably a 12M AAV at best, 9M AAV at worst.  5/$60 is likely his offer and eh would absolutely take that over a QO, considering the injury risk for a Catcher.

If he'd take 5/$50 to stay, I'd do it.
