Jorge Polanco: Playoff Hero in Seattle

Good for Jorge Polanco, who hit a walk-off single to advance the Mariners to the ALCS last night. 

The Twins/Mariners trade that sent Polanco to Seattle is looking more lopsided by the day: Justin Topa is below average and has spent more time on the injured list than in the bullpen, Anthony DeSclafini never pitched for the Twins. Both of these players join Sam Dyson and Tyler Mahle on a growing list of injured pitchers the Twins have traded for. 

Gabriel Gonzales is the only hope the Twins have of salvaging anything from this trade. He's 21, finished the year at AAA, and currently ranked as the #8 prospect in the Twins system. Right now his ETA is 2027. 

Meanwhile the Twins have question marks all over the infield. 

Everything hinges on Gonzales being a major contributor in the future. Otherwise this trade is going down in history as another fleece job.

I was so happy for Jorge Polanco. The Twins had Polanco for some good years. The trade is in the past. No reason for people to think about it any longer. Hopefully, the front office will have better luck making trades this offseason.

I think both the Mariners and Twins think the Twins won this trade, at least at this point (it's a draw at worst). The Twins traded Polanco's contract through 2024. He was then a free agent and anyone, including the Twins could have signed him for 2025. If the Twins had kept Polanco through 2024, there is zero chance of them resigning him after a .651 OPS year in 2024. The Mariners would gladly take Gonzalez back at this point as they still could have signed Polanco for his good 2025 year as they did in February for a reduced rate.
