Twins Minor League Report (7/17): Walks, Wild Pitches Push Twins over White Sox in DSL

All Star break was hopefully an opportunity for baseball fans to get away from the day-to-day for a few days, but on Friday, we will be back to a full schedule in the big leagues and the minor leagues. 

A couple of things to keep up with:

- Also, we will be updating the Twins Daily Top 20 Prospects rankings again. Go here to rank your personal Top 20 prospects. The options include the 2025 draft picks. It will be interesting to see how many show up in the Top 20.  

TRANSACTIONS
The Twins sent Jay Thomason to start a rehab assignment in the FCL. He joined fellow Kernels player Rayne Doncon.

The Twins got some very quality pitching performances on Thursday afternoon in Bradenton, but even with seven walks, it’s hard to win a game with just two hits. 

Xavier Kolhosser started and struck out five batters over four scoreless innings. He gave up one hit and walked one batter. Aiberson Ventura came in for the fifth inning and gave up one run on one hit and a walk. Anderson Ramos came on and got all nine batters he faced out, three of them on strikeouts. 

The Twins took a lead in the top of the fifth inning. Yandro Hernandez and Yilber Herrera walked. With one out, Eduardo Beltre singled to center to drive in Hernandez. 

The Pirates tied it up in the bottom of the fifth. The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the ninth. Andrew Huffman came in to pitch. With the runner on second base (scheduled seven-inning game), Eddie Rynders doubled to drive in the winning run and end the game. 

Beltre went 2-for-4 with his 10th double, an RBI and his 15th stolen base. In his rehab appearance, Rayne Doncon went 0-for-1 and walked twice. Herrera also walked twice.

The White Sox and Twins contingent of teenagers met for a ballgame down on the island of Hispaniola on Thursday morning. The Twins started out fast. The White Sox came all the way back, and the Twins offense showed up again late to reclaim the lead and grab a win. 

The offense started fast with three runs in the first inning. With one out, Santiago Leon walked. He moved to second on a ground out. Next, Jhomnardo Reyes reached on an error which allowed the first run to score. Yovanny Duran was hit by a pitch, and then Pablo Castillo was too. With the bases loaded, Joyner Perez singled to right field to drive in Reyes and Duran to make it 3-0. 

The Twins added four more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Jose Barrios led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. Teilon Serrano walked. After an out and a pitching change, Haritzon Castillo doubled to left to drive in Barrios. Serrano scored on a wild pitch. After the second out, Haritzon Castillo scored on a wild pitch. Duran walked again and went to second and later scored on a couple more wild pitches. 

Juan Figaro (18) started and tossed two scoreless innings. He gave up one hit, walked two and struck out one. 

Eli Urena came on for the third inning. He gave up one run that inning. He came back out for the fourth frame. He walked the first batter who stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. He walked the second batter who stole second. Another wild pitch allowed the first batter to score, and the second batter scored on a balk. After walking the third batter, Eliezer Lucena came into the game. After a walk, he recorded a fly out. A single drove in the inherited runner, but Lucena got a double play to end the threat. 

Urena gave up four runs on four walks in one inning. Lucena was charged with two runs (1 earned) on four hits and a walk over two innings. Juan Quinones gave up one run on three hits in his inning. Jesus Gomez gave up one walk and one strikeout in the seventh. 

With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Teilon Serrano singled. Santiago Leon walked. A double-steal put runners at second and third. Haritzon Castillo walked. Reyes singled to put the Twins back on top 8-7. With two outs, Pablo Castillo singled to drive in Leon and Haritzon Castillo and make it 10-7. 

Serrano went 1-for-2 with two walks and his 11th and 12th stolen bases. Leon walked twice and stole a base. Haritzon Castillo went 1-for-3 with a walk and a double. Pablo Castillo was 1-for-2, was hit by a pitch, walked and had two RBI. Perez also had two RBI. Barrios went 2-for-3.

The FCL Twins are having a wonderful season.  Are they in first place, Seth?

I know DSL numbers don't often mean much.  With five hitters having 800 plus OPS, sure looks good.  I know they are all young and several got nice bonuses last winter.  How do you feel about this group?

FCL has done pretty well.  No body that is a massive outperfomer,  but lots of solid hitters and pitchers.  Beltre, De Los Santos and Acuna are probably the 3 hitting prospects to watch.   They haven't hit as well as they did last year,  but all 3 have potential.    Melvin Rodriguez, Joel Garcia, and Anderson Ramos all seem to have some pitching talent,  but no one that is considered on the level of a Bohorquez.  They seem to be winning on sum of parts situation than 1 or 2 elite performers.    The jump from FCL to A ball is crazy though.  Yasser Mercedes in 5 games has 1.395 OPC in FCL,  while only sporting a .520 OPS at Fort Myers.  Bohorquez struggled immensely early on but now seems to have adjusted to the better talent.
