While its possible, certainly not without precedent, its pretty rare for a player to post a high OPS in AA and then fail as a hitter at the AAA level.

Might depend on what we mean by pretty rare but I don't think it's so rare as to be a surprise. Obviously, players will wash out at every level even after dominating the one below it.

Just looking at one random year in the EL - 1996 - and 17 guys had OPS over .850. 5 didn't make the majors and 3 of them didn't really hit well at AAA. That's a low percentage but that's still about 17% of hitters didn't make the jump to AAA well. I have no idea if one league in one year is representative but I think it shows it happens enough that it's not a surprise.

Brian Dozier is one rare dude.

While it might be rare to fail at the AAA level after some sucess at the AA level, at some point in time a player peaks. It couldd be going from AA to AAA. or AAA to the majors, at some point in time a player reaches their peak and falls back.

So here was my night. While my wife and kids celebrated the first night of summer vacation, I worked with the Twins Daily guys to arrange draft coverage. Promoted a few stories. Edited a few stories. Caught a few innings of the Twins game on the side. Got some technical details worked out on a podcast, recorded it, burned it and posted a story on it. Whew.

At 11:30, I found my wife asleep in the other room with the dog watching over her. I assured her I was done for the night and we could go to bed. As we do, I notice my ipad isn't on my nightstand, and it serves as my alarm clock, so I go get it and I notice there are a couple of reported posts in the forum on this thread.

So she's trying to sleep in our bed while I type next to her head, deleting posts and wondering why I wouldn't ban a few people who have already been banned in the past, but have been given a second chance and have just thrown up all over this thread.

...and I thought this was a thread about Clete Thomas and Tyler Robertson...

Posters have been complaining about the lack of an alternate CF since Mastroianni's injury--and by golly two months later Ryan brought one to the Twins--and it was someone who was actually successful at Rochester! Will he be a useful addition to the Twins?--Probably not. But I think Thomas was the most successful CF in the organization this season who was at a level consistent with promotion to the Twins. This promotion does make a statement to minor leaguers to "keep working, follow instructions, and play well--and you might get promoted"! So, for all of you complaining about a lack of an alternate to Hicks for the Twins--here he is--you may stop complaining.

Clete Thomas is not an alternative as a CF. Not even close. Filler favored over prospect is not a good idea. Through and through.
