False.  MLB players get W-2s for each state in which they play a game.  He’d be playing more games in California vs. Michigan.  California’s top marginal income tax rate is nearly 14%.  Michigan’s is between 4-5%.  He’d be paying 10% more tax on home games (and the other multitude of away games vs. the Giants and Pads).

Thats why people hire accountants.  To save them money.  He saved a ton (by my standards) by staying in Detroit.

The national league isn’t easier on pitchers anymore.  He’s currently pitching in the worst division in baseball with nobody that can score runs, on a team with zero expectations and pressure.  He’s not going to get a substantially better deal going to Dodgers in his next round of free agency.  If he struggles in any way, he’s much more likely to get yanked from the rotation and not get another shot.

Also, personal opinion here, but LA sucks.  If I got offered a transfer to an office out there I’d turn it down also.  But, to each their own.

It doesn't seem like the Lakers ever have problems convincing great players to come to LA?  Doesn't seem like the Yankees ever really have to convince the great ones to come to New York??  If taxes are what drives the athletes then why would anyone want to play in New York, or Minnesota for that matter??  I mean guys that want to win go to the teams that win when they have a chance to.  Probably says a lot about him and his intentions as a player (winning obviously doesn't matter to him).  I'm pretty sure that LA is now probably glad they lucked out and didn't get him.

I can somewhat understand not grabbing a RH bat. Maybe the front office feels that the likes of Pham and Hernandez wouldn't move the needle all that much with Lewis being close to a return and Polanco being back. Okay, fine. But...there is absolutely no excuse for failing to add to the bullpen especially when Stewart looks like he could be heading for TJ surgery.

This front office has a tendency to overcorrect. They swung and missed last August. This year, they don't even pick up a bat. It is amateur hour in Minnesota.

Yeah I think that some kind of bp help should have been done, maybe not a big ticket guy but someone that can go out there and get a few outs.
