Tom Froemming Twins Daily Contributor Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli was ejected by the umpiring crew in Houston after there was a misunderstanding over what was counted as a mound visit. Rocco left the dugout after a benches-clearing incident, was credited as having made a mound visit and not made aware of that fact. Later in the inning, Twins pitching coach Pete Maki went out for a visit and the Twins were forced to remove starter Aaron Sanchez because it was technically their second visit of the inning. Ooof. Down in the minors, Chris Williams continued to mash for the Saints and Austin Martin was running wild for the Wind Surge. All that and more in tonight's recap. View full video
Mark G Verified Member Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 I am a little miffed on this one. We are being told that the umps decided to count the bench clearing as a mound visit, which is bizarre in and of itself, but on top of that not one of the 4 told any of our coaches this? Wouldn't they get together and do the old "I thought you told them......no, I thought you told them......routine and realize nobody told anybody and let it go? Are we really sure no ump told no coach nothing?? If so, the league needs to get involved. If they did tell someone, our staff needs to have a reckoning.
Reptevia Verified Member Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 Rocco went to the mound briefly after the kerfluffle. The Umps got together, and the home plate umpire very clearly signaled to the scorer that a mound visit had taken place. Not sure what the actual requirements are, but it was noted. Mark G 1
David Maro Verified Member Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 I don't see the problem here. If the catcher goes to the mound it's a visit. So if the pitching coach goes to the mound it's a visit. Rocco went to the mound not to the infield grass. Him not being in the dugout would not have changed anything. This team is lifeless and looking to go back to their winter homes. Mark G 1
RickOShea Verified Member Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 Add another incident to Rocco's list of inadequacies. It's not the first time he's been guilty of not knowing the rules. Heck, if he doesn't have the official rulebook handy, he can 'google' it. The guy is a buffoon, and we've been suckered by not calling him on it, and holding him accountable. Mark G 1

The official MLB rules are not clear to me on whether the umpires must notify the manager that a mound visit has been credited. While it appeared to me that Baldelli did make a mound visit as the kerfuffle was winding down, if the umpires did not notify Baldelli that a mound visit had been credited then Baldelli has a legitimate beef.
