Berardino: Pelfrey Hopes a Little Variety Goes a Long Way

"He keeps wanting to pound everyone in, in, in, in, in," [pitching coach Rick] Anderson said after a bullpen session Saturday, April 20, in Chicago. "We're trying to get him to use the other side of the plate a lot more and see if he can't open up the inside."

 

"That was the first thing I talked to him about," Anderson said. "If you like to pitch inside, you still have to earn that side. You can't go in there and think it's all yours without earning it. You earn it by going away and making them aware of the other side of the plate. Then you can go in there. He keeps going in, in, in, he's very predictable."

Those are some pretty frank comments from Anderson. I feel like it's rare that you see him critique one of his own pitchers so openly. Pelfrey's location will be worth following tonight.

This along with the frustration over his slow pace makes me think he does not have a long leash.

Has anyone noticed if Pelfrey is shaking off Mauer more than other pitchers do? Or is Mauer pretty much going along with Pelf's preferences and it's all on Anderson to encourage some changes?
