Gardy a Manager on the Hot Seat

I don't see Gardy getting fired during the season unless things spiral completely out of control.

He may well not be brought back next year, so in that sense I guess he's in the hot seat, but I think there will be several guys who lose their jobs before Gardy loses his.

(To be clear, I'm not advocating that's how it should be, I'm just saying that's how I think it will play out.)

I guess that Gardenhire's salary has escalated considerably from 2002, and to the point that he is likely in the top 10 of salaries for MLB field managers. IMO he could be replaced for a lot less salary and by a guy who will have a new perspective on everybody and everything. The Twins are in a cost-cutting mode, so replacing Gardenhire would conform to that strategy. Gardenhire repesents the past, and a transition is needed to the future--however far off that will be.

I'm just fine wth Gardy's seat being plenty warm right now. I thought he was the right man for the job back in '02. I think he does a good job with veterans who probably need managed the least. I don't think he's done a particularly good job with young guys since that first wave in '02 and I don't think he's done a particularly good job in the post-season. Is Gene Glynn an heir apparent? Would Molitor be the guy?

I blame Grady for saying he was too mad to talk to hicks, but he talked to the press first about the false hustle he wanted to see. Too mad to talk to the player, but willing to rip him first publicly. That is awful leadership.

Awful leadership? What are you talking about? This is the equivalent of someone's manager sending an e-mail to the whole company about having issues with something you did and you found out that way instead of an 1-1 talk in his/her office.

Gardy is a jerk. Period. Unless you are in his inner circle.

Hopefully he (and his 3 stooges) will not last another month with the Twins.

I agree with this completely...

When I saw this thread (or read similar ones all the time), I envision Thrylos at his computer seeing the thread and his heart starts beating a little faster and he can't open up the thread fast enough!! :)

Ha :)

I am just a bit satisfied to see people joining the Fire Gardy bandwagon 5 years or so after I keep saying that the Twins need to do that... Too bad it took 2 horrid seasons for that to happen.

Still miss Sean Schulte's Firegardy.com blog btw, do you remember it?

I disagree completely. I think fans are way too sensitive to this type of stuff and it really has minimal impact on an athlete's psyche going forward. Probably not unprecedented for a manager to mention to the media an aspect of a young players game that might need improvement.

If you want to be charitable I would day Gardy has to be in front of something like this (even though Hicks didn't really do anything that egregious) and make sure his inability slump doesn't impact other aspects of his game.

If you want to be less charitable Gardy has now seen Hicks basically take a big dump for 10 games, probably cost the Twins a game or two, and he wants to vent but can't talk about the elephant in the room.

I should add I would have no problem if the Twins make a change but it would have very little to do with the reasons you have cited here or in the past.

Gardy will never win with some people.

When he comes down on players who dog it or screw up, they criticize him for being a big meanie.

When he fails to come down on players who dog it or screw up, he's ripped for coddling them.

When he keeps a struggling player the lineup in hopes he can play through it, they cry for Gardy to bench him.

When Gardy benches struggling players, they whine about Gardy giving up on guys too easily.

It may be time to sever ties with Gardy, but if that's the approach you're going to take towards managers, don't expect to be any happier with his replacement.

Winning in the post season and winning a title or two will make him win with a lot of people. That has always been my biggest issue with Gardenhire (giving up and looking beaten against some opponents and whining about individual efforts -like the Hicks' example- vs. team non-accomplishments, which is pretty darn divisive. You win as a team and you lose as a team. And if you don't win, you should not be happy. That simple. And he has not installed that.)

Is THAT how you describe what he said to the media about Hicks?

Gardy mentioned after the 2011 season that players were tuning him out and were defensive when he talked to them. He even said they mentioned how they didn't like him, 'throwing them under the bus'. I think it clearly does bother the players.

I was in the military for 23 years...I went to three different formal leadership schools while I was in (not to mention a couple week long refreshers here and there)...and one of the common themes was: Praise in public, criticize in private (a saying Vince Lombardi used to say as well). Followed closely by take none of the credit and all of the blame.

---Ah, yes, the Ricky Bobby view, "if you're not first, you're last". Either you win it all, or you suck. That's why Jeff Hostetler was a better quarterback than that loser Dan Marino.

My day is made now that I've heard Hostetler's name.

That "loser Dan Marino" IIRC led an undefeated NFL team... (And Hostetler was a great QB in West-by-God-Virginia.) And in my book Marino was a better QB that lots in his era (including Montana and Elway). And another point to my argument that it is a team sport.... and not an individual sport.

Wait, Marino was a better QB than Montana?

yeah

in my book. Better arm and better accuracy. But Montana had a better supporting cast. Other than Super Duper, Marino had no receivers... Clayton was so and so. And Marino's teams had no defense, no running back and questionable O-lines, unlike Montana's 49er teams.

It is a team thing.

Montana didn't start his career with much offensive help either though. Rice didn't show up until after Montana led them to two Super Bowls Championships. 9ers had 1,000 yard receiver in '81, but the most rushing yards was 549. In '84, they didn't have a 1,000 receiver (not even 900 yard receiver) but they did have a 1,000 yard rusher in '84.

I despised the 9ers. I grew up a Rams fan and then we moved from Southern California to Northern California and my parents became traitors (became 9ers fans). I had the 'joy' of watching all their games. Used to drive me crazy when he'd lead the team out onto the field with two minutes left and down...he was always smiling like it was no biggy...and then he'd lead them down the field and win.

My issue with Marino is that he didn't seem to trust the rest of his team. Seemed every time he audibled it was to change a rushing play to a passing play. Just seemed to me he was more worried about stats than the overall result.

He didn't

---I know, but there was a claim that he did. Perhaps that was just a reference to something that happened in NFL '95 on Sega Genesis in the parents' basement.
