Fun with Numbers 2021

Not used to having to deal with games in hand in baseball...

We're even in the Loss column with KC, but they got 2 in hand, so they could make up the 1 game they are behind us.

Likewise, Detroit and Cleveland are even in the win column, but Cleveland has 3 games in hand.

AL Wild Card elimination numbers are off as stated on MLB's standings, They are calculated based on Boston's win total because NY is half a game ahead of Boston. But NY has few wins, so they should be using NY's win total.

It reassures me to know we have a slightly better chance than they say we do of earning a wild card spot.

When I look at MLB.com, it has the opposite of what you state.  It has NY first, even though NY has 78 wins and Boston has 79 wins.

Note that this is the wrong way to calculate it.  Whoever has more wins is in the driver's seat, they are in the lead even if %-wise they might be tied or even behind.  If teams played varying amounts of games in a baseball season, %-wise would be the way to go, but every team that makes the playoffs will play the same number of regular season games.  Whoever has the most wins will be the team with the higher seed or make the cutoff for the playoffs.  Should the Yankees match Boston's win total given the current percentages, they would then be in the driver's seat and thus be in the lead.

If this is what you meant to say, I apologize for the long explanation.  ;)

The Rays finished the year with the 4rh best team ERA in MLB.

But...they did not have a single pitcher qualify for the ERA title.

Not one Rays pitcher threw even 162 innings.

To me this is further evidence to contradict the stance of Morris and Blyleven that it is better for starters to throw more pitches.

Dunno whether it's better or worse, but it's definitely a trend.
