Down in Fort Myers, A young pitcher named Bailey Ober has made 4 starts and has a 0.00 ERA. How could he not be my next target in this series? Now, to be fair, 2 runs have scored during these starts, but neither of them were earned.

 

Bailey Ober was originally drafted by the Dodgers back in 2016 but he returned to college and was then drafted by the Twins in the 12th round in 2017. Ober has a K rate of 10.5/ 9 innings over the course of his young career so 26 K's in 24 innings is no big surprise nor is his success as he has a 2.98 career ERA so far with a career 1.01 WHIP and 15 walks which is basically 1 walk/9 innings.

 

Is this success sustainable? The Stats to me say yes. So why is he not a bigger prospect? Injuries. Ober missed parts of two seasons in college with Tommy John surgery and then with back issues which I am sure was part of the reason he was not drafted higher.

 

Last year he made 14 starts for the Kernels before landing on the injured list July 28th. I have done some looking but I have not identified what the injury was. On Thursday July 26th the Gazette reported that he was the scheduled starter for the 27th. He was reinstated Sept. 25th so apparently, he missed the rest of the season. If Ober can establish some long term health, we may see him rise on the prospect lists.
