Carlos Santana: Go For It

Every time I’ve seen Cleveland, it seems that Santana is banging a couple of balls off the wall or over it. Projections for his contract look lower than expected, and he could give the Twins their best DH since Chili Davis, while being a good back-up for Mauer. Also, because he would stabilize the position, two other spots on the 40-man would come open, because both Grossman and Vargas would become superfluous. Regardless of what happens with Sano, Santana would be a great fit. If they don’t get him, the attempt in itself could be good, if it drives up his cost to Cleveland or whoever signs him. Finally, every good Santana should play for the Twins!

Yeah, I'm not opposed to him but it's unlikely that the Twins will spend the money there instead of on pitching.

Other than the obvious reasons....

I love idea of signing Santana, with one minor hesitation:

If there is ANY chance that Otani signs with the Twins based on a lack of a strong DH, you take the gamble with Otani.

Signing Santana with the uncertainty around Sano just doesn't work. If Sano has to be the DH (1/2 of the games) then the Twins would have spent a lot of money and created a roster/playing time issue.

I like the idea of signing Santana but don't think it works for the Twins. Todd Frazier on the other hand plays 3B and is very good defensively. If I added an offensive player then it would be someone with some positional versatility.
