Paul Pleiss Verified Member Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 Any other Iditarod fans out there? I'm really geeking out on the race this year and looking to see if there are any other Twins fan constantly refreshing the race standings and reading everything they can find on the interwebz. -Paul
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 I don't follow it closely, but I did notice it started and I will click into stories here and there. I always feel sorry for the dogs even though I know they are especially bred and trained for this ... I still feel sorry for them working so hard in extreme conditions.
Paul Pleiss Verified Member Posted March 12, 2017 Author Posted March 12, 2017 I'm a pretty big opponent of greyhound racing, and animal abuse, I just don't see it with the Iditarod teams. I'm sure there are bad mushers out there, as there are bad eggs in every pocket of humanity, but it seems by and large the mushers and kennels who raise dogs truly care for their animals. It can be life or death out there on the trail, and they depend on each other for survival. But I also realize that I've got rose colored glasses, as the adventure aspect of the sport just makes me love it.

And yeah, there are always bad eggs. I think there was a musher some years back who was banned or suspended or something because of bad treatment of his dogs, or something like that? It's just an extreme sport. And even though they are bred and trained for it, I just can't help but feel sorry for them.
