PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Oh look at that, military coup in Turkey.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Oh look at that, military coup in Turkey. The anti Islam people should love this.....but I bet the right says this is Obama's fault. My former neighbor in MN took a group of architecture students (and his family) from the U of M to Turkey each of the last several years. They are getting updates from friends, and posting some on FB. So far, all their friends are safe, but it is not over yet.
Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I hope for Turkey's sake that Erdogan is removed from power and is replaced by a secular leader and brings the Kurds into the equation and unites the Turks and the Kurds. That is what Ataturk would want.
Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 The anti Islam people should love this.....To be honest, I have not seen these or read a post propagated by these people you speak of. at least on this site.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 To be honest, I have not seen these or read a post propagated by these people you speak of. at least on this site. It's sad in how predictable it is.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Anyone heard anything about who is behind the coup or the objectives yet? Reporting seems really vague on it so far.
Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Anyone heard anything about who is behind the coup or the objectives yet? Reporting seems really vague on it so far.No, it is pretty blurry right now. I hope it works out for the best.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I hope so too, Turkey has some serious problems, but relative to what else we have to work with in the Middle East they are at least predictable. That can't be underestimated.

TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 If we lose them. I don't have the words. The Turkish president seems to believe this guy is behind it. If true, I'd be ok with it provided his beliefs became the dominant view in Turkey.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 To be honest, I have not seen these or read a post propagated by these people you speak of. at least on this site.Who said I was talking about people on this site? The current leader has been moving the society to be less secular. Those that feel he has gone to far should like this. You guys read stiff I don't type. Over and over.

If true, I'd be ok with it provided his beliefs became the dominant view in Turkey. Wait, you are for this, just minuets after assuming bad intentions in my part about who would be for this? Frankly, I might be for this. Kind of depends.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Wait, you are for this, just minuets after assuming bad intentions in my part about who would be for this? Frankly, I might be for this. Kind of depends. I was providing information after reading a news story. I hadn't heard of this cleric in Pennsylvania, did a little reading, and shared it. Are you suggesting your earlier comment was once again about posters not on this site that you posted on this site and made no effort to clarify? (I believe you did that in the Castille thread just a day or so ago) As a general rule I don't carry arguments I'm having elsewhere here and retort them. If for nothing else, because it's confusing as hell.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I never said anything other than those that oppose Islam will probably like this. That list of people is probably in the billions. To assume I was making some attack on people here, well, maybe don't always jump to the negative assumption about posts. I have no idea why you would even assume I would only talk about people here.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Perhaps it's an unfair reaction, but it's pretty much exactly the kind of comment I hear too often. And I see it leveled against others out there publicly as well. Do you really think Bark and I would have the same reaction if it didn't come off that way? I apologize for thinking the worst, but trying to take it neutrally just makes me confused about what you were saying.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 I was saying what I typed. Nothing more or less. That's usually what I try to do.

That is what Ataturk would want.IANAK* but my understanding is this is precisely the opposite of what the Kurds in Turkey themselves desire. They want their own state of Kurdistan, carved out from Turkey** and Iraq and Syria and Iran. What could go wrong? Remember this, every time you see in the news that the Kurds are helping us in Iraq. They expect something in return, and it has ramifications on NATO among many other things. I want subtle nuanced leadership for my country in dealing with this. * I am not a Kurd ** Carved...Turkey... I slay me
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 That was my understanding as well. They basically are universally hated by the sects around them and they'd rather govern themselves. Which totally makes sense. Again, they are a moderate, reasonable group of people for the most part.
Bark's Lounge Verified Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 IANAK* but my understanding is this is precisely the opposite of what the Kurds in Turkey themselves desire. They want their own state of Kurdistan, carved out from Turkey and Iraq and probably a couple of other countries that I'm forgetting. * I am not a KurdYeah, I can see that being their desire and it should happen. They went through some more than awful times and have done good for themselves. I don't know how this will happen, and borders will obviously be redefined. Erbil will be their capital and I wish them the greatest success. My admiration for the Kurds is probably more than any sect of people I can think of.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Did I really type it that many times? Whatever, we are all good. Outside the first world, it's only exactly stable out there right now. And, it is seeping into the first world nations. This will make us all uncomfortable, and some kind of change will happen. Good or bad
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Is there a chance it becomes so common we become almost comfortable with it? I've just begun to chew on that idea a bit lately.....(Not saying I endorse any answers, just posting something I've been thinking about)

Sorry I have been a mess of responses tonight, I have guests over, my voice has been bad and diluted. We need to be united and fight this ideology!

We are cool with our people killing each other, to a degree. But, if outsiders come in, no way. Especially not if they are clearly not Christian, imo.
