Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 So you would rather waste a year on a 30 year old shortstop that is mediocre defensively instead of Escobar? You'd rather start a 30 year old in CF instead of Buxton? The Twins would still be trash this year. I don't get why we would want anything to do with Desmond. Good pick up for the Rangers but it would have been a useless move for the Twins. In a rebuild, like the Cubs did it.....teams sign older players to 1 year deals TO DEAL THEM LATER, it is one way to buy prospects, basically. The Twins, otoh, signed guys to 1 year deals, then re-upped them......and did not trade them. So, if you think the team is rebuilding, you might do this. Also, since they have had zero good CF since they decided to trade Span for nothing, it seems reasonable that you might sign a guy that can play CF and SS and 3B (maybe), in case your Buxton and Escobar plans went south....... not saying I'd do it, but I can understand why you would.

I don't think the Cubs ever did a 1 year deal on a player with a QO. And typically the terms were much smaller. So I'm not sure how you're making that comparison?

So I'm not sure how you're making that comparison? I was responding to "why would any team every sign an old player in a rebuild".........and I said earlier I'd not do it because of the QO. If you took it to mean THIS EXACT scenario, I failed in my communication, clearly.

I heartily endorse signing low term contracts with older players that have upside for trade fodder. The odds of that in Desmond's case were incredibly small, not to mention it doesn't even fit the example because he wasn't a "low risk, low term" type of contract.

Given the current roster, not sure how they do this now, though. They may have lost their shot at this being a valid approach. Unless we think they are still short an OF, only bullpen would appear to have openings (not lack of talent, other spots have that) where you could still use this approach.

I agree, I think they missed their window. But I do hope they look for guys like Grossman (yeah, he's coming back down to earth, but the philosophy was sound) and others. Maybe at the deadline they can clear some glut in the rotation, otherwise they don't have a lot of places to make that sort of signing.

Note that it probably helped to have a good to great defense behind them. The great trades all involved shipping someone out at midseason to a contender.
