Tonkin and O'Rourke together make a great pitcher.

I want Tonkin to face lefties as much as I want O'Rourke to face righties.   Both of these guys are/should be situational OOGYS

I hate the concept of a LOOGY.  Can only get the job done against a small fraction of the batters in baseball.  I think the Twins would be better served by using Tonkin more.  He looked very good and very aggressive in his last appearance.

We all know that almost all batters have better results facing opposite-handed pitchers. The thing is that the percentage of right-handed pitchers faced by right-handed batters is much higher than the percentage of left-handed pitchers faced by left-handed batters. That's why it's much more of an advantage for the same-sided pitcher when both are lefties than when both are righties. And that's why there aren't any ROOGY specialists (at least that I've ever heard of). So there's nothing to hate about it. It's a real thing.

Rogers was added to the club when it looked like the team needed a long reliever. However the starters have been doing a good job of working into the later innings. While O'Rourke can be of use right now, he is also a player who may be expendable from the 40 man roster if the team needs to add someone (such as a certain outfielder signed to a minor league contract). The additional innings O'Rourke provides could increase his trade value if a move needs to be made.

Teams have short benches these days, so a comparable righty bat may not be available to pinch hit.

 

That is true - though O'Rourke is so bad against righties and so good against lefties that any righty bat might become comparable.
