Alex Meyer had himself a nice night

Was very excited about his line in this start. In the article at MiLB.com they said he hit 99mph. But, his comments were interesting. He stated that he thought of himself of more of a bullpen guy, but that the Twins wanted him to start this year. Weird. I know that he most likely just wants to be in the big leagues any way that he can get there, but rarely will you here a guy admit that he'd rather be a reliever than a starter! Again, I am assuming he just wants to be in the bigs and knows that is his best way there, but if he can keep this up, he is much more valuable to the team and himself as a starter.

It appears that all of those rumors of his demise were greatly exaggerated.

All the more impressive, as the Jays per usual, stash a bunch of guys with major league hitting experience in AAA.

Great game Alex.

Now just quit with all that bullpen mumbo jumbo, I think you're seriously over estimating the starters in front of you.

I'm not sure if Hughes and Milone can hit 99 combined.

I read this interview and grew concerned that Meyer may have a self-image problem. When I read quotes from this interview I think- "Mr. Alex Meyer- Kindergarten Teacher" - the antithesis of the throwback big league closers, so intimidating to major league hitters- ie, Rod Beck/Goose Gossage/Randy Myers/Al Hrabosky...

For heaven's sake- won't somebody start feeding Alex some raw steak and teach him how to snarl like a pit bull, already?

He's been consistent with those comments all spring. Really, even last year, he admitted that he preferred the bullpen. But the Twins were wise in having him start for several reasons including:

1.) build arm strength and allow him to be a long-reliever if htat's what the Twins need

2.) work out of more situations. I fully agree with this one. The tough situations that a reliever comes into in the 7th, 8th or 9th innings are the same situations as they put themselves into in the earlier innings. They need to work out of them.

3.) He can work on a third pitch, and I Know that isn't vital for a reliever, but if he can have a changeup at 84 to go with a fastball 95-99 and a slider in the upper 80s, he can be a tremendous bullpen weapon.

4.) Maybe the starting thing works out and instead of pitching 60-80 innings a season for the Twins, he can pitch 150-180!

One of the concerns I have/had about him is hat he just might be too nice to be great. I don't know if he has that killer instinct, per se... but then he puts together an outing like this, and it reminds me that personality doesn't matter on the mound. Mechanics and stuff and confidence are all much, much more important.

Yeah, I agree with those points, but it is still just not all that common to hear the pitcher have such a preference and state. But still, I wonder if it is 100% due to him preferring being in the bullpen, or more him just wanting to be in the bigs in the worst way...and thinking that is his fastest and safest route there? It is not crazy to wonder if he might just want the quickest and safest route for financial and boyhood dreams of being in the bigs.

Either way, it was encouraging and will be fun to follow. I am more encouraged by this than Stewart. FSL is a pitchers league and he still is just inside the top ten of qualified starters thus far, so its not like he is doing anything unheard of there. But, again here, very encouraging compared to past two years.

Meyer has 4 pitches, including a high 70s curveball. Here. With radar pictures.  Back then he did not have a changeup, but was throwing a 4- and a 2-seamer.

I suspect that the bull talk is Meyer wanting to play it the "Twins' way" and be a corporate guy.

The only pitcher in the organization with Ace stuff.  He should start.  Period.
