USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 Okay ... top ten songs of all time. Or it could be your top ten favorite songs. Four just isn't any easy number to deal with, especially on a desert island. My answer right now: Beatles: YesterdayRolling Stones: Honky Tonk WomanJohn Prine: Sam Stone (actually...anything John Prine has ever done. Seriously)Mavericks: All You Ever Do Is Bring Me DownSimon and Garfunkel: The BoxerSteely Dan: My Old SchoolEmmyLou Harris: Red Dirt GirlSon Volt: Tear Stained Eye Jeebus...what a list of depressing songs. Ask me again tomorrow.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 Dude, that is s depressing list. You ok?

formerly33 Verified Member Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 I think we've done a top 10 or top 5 song thing before. Maybe it was in a game thread, though.I'd have to think on that though ... but off the top of my head I'd go with these to start:Over the RainbowLa Vie en RoseImagineBoheman RhapsodyO mio babbino caroThat would've been before my time. I've actually heard all of these (not that I've ever watched The Wizard of Oz ... lol). Do you have any preferred covers? My list is not in order and definitely not finalized, but ... Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)Sinnerman (Nina Simone)Donde Estas, Yolanda? (Pink Martini)The Mighty Quinn (Bob Dylan) with Manfred MannRespect (Aretha Franklin)Rebel Girl (Bikini Kill) - or Dig Me Out or Terrorist ... so many great Riot Grrrl songsTerritorial Pissings (Nirvana)Highway to Hell (AC/DC)Twist and Shout (Beatles)Heh ... let's just put Terrorist (Heavens to Betsy) in there too. Probably my #1 fave anyway. Gosh, ten doesn't do it, either. I even intentionally left out classical songs because they deserve a whole list of their own, imo. That would have to be something like this (arranged more by genre than preference): Theme from Schindler's List (John Williams) with Itzhak PerlmanKlezmer Dances (Göran Fröst) with the one and only Martin FröstSanto (Juan Diego Florez)Recuerdos de la Alhambra (Francisco Tárrega) with Miloš KaradaglićDanzón No. 2 (Arturo Márquez) with Gustavo Dudamel and the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón BolívarCarnevale di Venezia (Giulio Briccialdi) with Sharon BezalyConcertino (Cécile Chaminade)Cello Sonata No. 1 (Johannes Brahms) with Truls Mørk and Hélène Grimaud Actually, the first few worked, but now I realize we'd need another top ten for sonatas, concertos, symphonies, operas, etc. each. They are so much more than just a song! [edited the stupidest typo out]

USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 I hope I can find everyone's list on YouTube music. I'll give those I haven't heard a listen next week at work. Thanks all, keep em coming.
biggentleben Verified Member Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 That's 5, or 6. Yeah, I have no idea how to reduce without losing genres...or musical memories that are pretty big for me.
biggentleben Verified Member Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 I think I've seen them, from MN? Winners of the same competition as Pentatonix? Not bad. Yeah, they're from MN, but they've really some fun stuff, including their take on "All About That Bass" and their "Butts Remix". If you can't smile watching those videos, you need a life reboot.

You can only use this function for a limited amount of time, but I've strategically used it up one by one on every computer I have access to, so I've never been long without free access to all the BIS recordings in the past few years.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2016 Author Posted March 26, 2016 Second honorable mention: Warren Zevon: Lawyers, Guns and Money? Can we add that one?Nice list.Yes, of course. Although that makes me think of Cuba.
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 Gosh, ten doesn't do it, either. I even intentionally left out classical songs because they deserve a whole list of their own, imo....The Mighty Quinn (Bob Dylan) with Manfred Mann And with that I now know two Manfred Mann songs, and both are covers. Agree with your first point so, in an attempt to put together a sem-focused list... how about top 5 covers? Mine would be 5. Joe Cocker- Feelin Alright4. Metallica- Whisky in the Jar3. Rapeman- Just Got Paid Today 2. Nirvana- The Man Who Sold the World1. Manfred Mann- Blinded by the Light
formerly33 Verified Member Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 Oh, and then there's always 2Cellos, here to raise cello awareness among plebeians (no, it's not a violin on steroids). Here's my favorite video of theirs, probably because it also features Lang Lang: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UMla4zYpoc
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 This is impossible but these would help me last quite awhile. Stairway to Heaven - Zeppelin (if only for Page's guitar solo) La Grange - ZZ Topp Sympathy for the Devil - Stones Let it Be - Beatles As Falls Wichita so falls Wichita Falls - Metheny/Mays Memphis in the Meantime - John Hiatt Ain't to Proud to Beg- Temptations Higher Ground- Stevie Wonder Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen Hoochie Coochie Man--Muddy Waters Edit: I see we're adding honourable mentions, What's so Funny bout Peace Love and Understanding- Elvis Costello.

While you may have heard of these songs, maybe not all the versions I listen to. (although I would expect 'Imagine' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody' are no brainers)
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 Eric Clapton - LaylaWhich one?

Willihammer Provisional Member Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 I didn't either. Hell I didn't know Nirvana's "Man who sold the world" was a cover til Bowie died a few weeks ago lol.

Willihammer Provisional Member Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 Some covers are better than the originals ... Yeah but its always slightly disappointing to hear that a song you really like wasn't an original.I can't even find the original Phil Medley version of Twist and Shout, not on YT anyways.

Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2016 Author Posted March 26, 2016 Which one?My question too; I really prefer the slower, unplugged, version.

That and "Chelsea Dagger" used to be my favorite songs ... a bit too poppy for my current tastes, but I listened to those two nonstop for a month or two when I first got into rock.
