Twins all time roster based on WAR

The Twins came in 7th out of all MLB, but that rank depends heavily on Walter Johnson, who had an awesome 152.3 WAR for the Senators.

 

Obviously, this is mostly for fun.  For example, it has Killebrew at 3B and Joe Judge at 1B.  But there's nothing wrong with fun, so please keep this thread fun.

That was a lot of fun. The only player I could find with a higher WAR for a single team/franchise than Walter Johnson's 152.3 in 21 years was Willie Mays at 154.6 in 21 years. Koufax was only 53.2 for 12 years, and even if you double that he would only be at 106.4 for 24 years......

 

And to think when folks voted for the top 4 players in the franchise, "The Franchise Four"..... Walter didn't get enough votes. Nobody is even close to Walter in the franchise.

Carew's 12 years netted 63.7 and Killebrew's 21 years, only 60.4. Oliva's 15 years, 43.0; and Puckett's 12, 50.9. Johnson was more than double Carew and Killebrew, and more than triple Puckett and Oliva (well, almost triple Puckett... 0.4 short). Not even close. Not. even. close.

 

Just because the franchise changed its name, doesn't mean it isn't the same franchise. Maybe if the Twins became the Minnesota Senators (like the New York Giants to the San Francisco Giants for Mays, the Milwaukee Braves to the Atlanta Braves for Hank Aaron, or the Boston Braves to the Milwaukee Braves for Warren Spahn to make Atlanta's Franchise Four) .....then more Minnesota fans would have honored the history and one of the greatest and most impactful pitchers to ever play the game.

I didn't take the time to look at any other team but looking at the individual WAR numbers I assume it was for playing only at the position under consideration and only while playing for that team. That would mean that a player with a high career WAR but who played multiple positions for multiple teams may not show up on this. Still an interesting idea, though.

I don't think so. I think it is the total WAR for the time on that team, and the position assigned is the one most representative of that time and player. Killebrew's total years for the Twins/Senators is included in the parenthesis. Baseball Reference has Killebrew's total war for his 21 years with the franchise at 60.5 for all his playing time (-0.1 for his 1 year with KC). I could be wrong. Might have to ask the author.

You're probably right.
