Yeah, they swapped Sansa for Alayne.  I don't think that scene was handled well at all and it's easily the biggest choice the show has made that I question.

I also understand where they are coming from.  Book Sansa has basically spent several hundred pages brooding and doing nothing.  You can sort of do that in a book, but if you basically have a character doing nothing and being no significant part of the story for hours on end in a television show, it becomes pretty obvious and problematic.  That doesn't justify their handling of her character, but Martin's writing of some characters made the TV version really difficult to handle.  (Though, for me, reading an endless slog of nothing happening wasn't much easier either)

I think a lot people had a real hard time with the scene because it was Sansa, probably the best loved (for whatever reason) female character on the show.  Let's face it, worse has happened to female and male characters on this show.

It certainly wasn't out of character for Ramsey to do that, just ask Reek,er, I mean Theon.

People like Sansa? I've been actively cheering for her to meet a gruesome end for roughly 4,000 pages. I can't imagine anyone actually liking the character.

Arya, on the other hand, she's a favorite of almost everyone I know.

The show-makers mentioned the reason they changed it was because fans loved the Sansa character and didn't want to have her doing nothing forever (like she does in the books) or be completely off screen for so long (like Bran).

'Besides, Cogman (a writer-producer) pointed out: “You have this storyline with Ramsay. Do you have one of your leading ladies—who is an incredibly talented actor who we’ve followed for five years and viewers love and adore—do it? Or do you bring in a new character to do it? To me, the question answers itself: You use the character the audience is invested in.”

Notice how much more likable Tyrion is in the show?  Because fans of the show love him so much the writers made him more likable.

I agree with you, though, about Sansa.  Can't stand her.  But I believe if it had been Jayne, like in the book, way less rage (if any rage) would have occurred among so many people (about a fictional show, BTW).
