The Hardball Times is doing a series of in-depth positional case studies. Today they looked at Twins 3rd basemen.

Really a fascinating read, particularly considering the situation we're facing with Plouffe and Sano. It made me a little more understanding re: the Twins trying to keep Plouffe at 3b.

Good story, but they say that Plouffe is eligible for free agency "in" 2017, not "after" 2017. Fail.

Aren't players are eligible to declare for free agency like 2 weeks after the WS? That sure seems like 2017 to me, but I am not following the Mayan calendar any more after they botched the whole 'end of the world' thing.

Yeah, literally that is correct, but most baseball writers use the phrase "free agency in 2017" to mean a free agent for (or before) the 2017 season.  At least that is my understanding.

The author ends the article discussing Plouffe's chances of being re-signed for 2018, without even mentioning the looming presence of Miguel Sano by name. Instead he chalks up Plouffe's likely departure to a continued "anonymous strategy" by the team. I don't get it.

Indeed, third base has been more or less a revolving door since they arrived in the Twin Cities in 1961. Only three third basemen have played as many as 800 games in Minnesota: Gaetti, Koskie and Rich Rollins, a player from the 1960s. Based on past history, odds are long that the Twins will try to lock down Plouffe long term. Instead, they’ll probably just get an inexpensive veteran as a stopgap before handing the job to a prospect.
